Andy Stanley Really Ticks Me Off

Posted on 19. Feb, 2007 by loswhit in Authenticity

Picture 2-20

Here are the different reasons why Andy Stanley ticks me off.
1. He makes me look at the things I DO NOT WANT TO LOOK AT and changes my thinking.
2. His passion constantly shows me that I have room to be more passionate.
3. He challenges me to look at my system and constantly ask the hard questions.
4. He shows me how pissed off my family is at me when they do not see me from Sunday to Wednesday afternoon

So. Andy Stanley. Thanks for continuing to tick people off. Because your DRIVE for seeing the world come to know Christ is infectious.

Yea. I just watched EVERY Drive video in one sitting. It is 3:30 am. It was as addicting as 24. Now how many people can pull that off and not be Jack Bauer?
Who has pissed you off like this lately?

Francis Chan’s podcast from last week. It was all about giving to the least of my children is the same as giving to me. “You fed me when I was hungry and clothed me when I had no clothes, etc, etc, etc…..”

I had to turn off the podcast because I felt like a schlubb.

I’ll try to take a look at these inspiring/convicting videos this week…..

He doesn’t piss me off. I just get depressed that I’m not him; or Rob Bell; or Mark Driscoll; or Carlos Whittaker.

You when you call my “SOUTH” dirty. You should be ashamed of yourself. Next time you need clean undies from the 24 hour Wally world, you walk.

    Nice Boots!!

Closer to home, but it’s my mentor, Monty Sharp. He has this incredible way of telling me the exact thing I don’t want to hear when I’m in a tough situation, but that I need to hear. But the great part is he does it in a way that he reminds me who I am in Christ and I also feel encouraged to be just that. Thank God for people that piss us off!!

Francis Chan, Voddie Bachaum, Matt Brown…

Oh, and speaking of Jack Bauer…what a stud.

Oh my gosh that would be the perfect infomercial slogan:
“Let Andy Stanley Piss You Off” with these fabulous videos
Then you could have all the testimonials “this is how Andy Stanley pissed me off…and I’ve never been the same”. Nice.

Seriously Los-That is some harsh language about Andy. The best part of the guy is that is not just a Sunday morning thing. It’s how he runs a church! Love him. (Maybe that is the right language :) ) Did you get those creative board pics?

I went to Northpoint a lot while livin in A-town(down)… he is one freakin amazing teacher. I would have to leave an hour before one of the 17 sunday service times so i could do the 30-40min drive and these meander around the parking lot, trying not to get pissed that it’s like going to Six Flags (over georgia of course). Northpoint rocks though..

Let’s get together about the pipeline music ministry stuff… i’d love to get involved man!

Interesting way of saying how something affected you – I like it. Lately Leonard Ravenhill is tearing me a new one. He’s old school European, but he gets in your head and makes think of your Christian spirituality in hard ways. It’s rough! Especially for pomos like us. He’s got some stuff on sermon audio – I highly recommend it!

I understand what is being said but I am offended that you have to use worldly expressions to get your point across. The word “ticked” or “miffed” (yes, I’m a senior) would do just as well. Why do we have to be so drawn into the world’s mentality when we’re trying to live for Christ. WWJD??
I suppose the idea is to ‘catch’ the unsaved – but I don’t think using vulgar words does much to draw people to Christ & Christianity. I have just used A.S’s DVD series, Go Fish, with a group of men and all of us were truly challenged to get out there and witness for our Lord and Savior. Andy Stanley is a man of God who is truly touching his generation. PTL.

I am wondering if Jesus spoke like Beaver when he was turning the tables upside down in the temple?

I don’t know. Probably not. I think that he was fully able to communicate the scope of his thoughts with his audience in a way they would easily understand.

Sometimes “piss” works better than “hacked”, “miffed”, “ticked”, “peeved” or any other word we can use to substitute it. And if our intent is to convey in clarity that we are indeed angry, annoyed, dare I say pissed then let it flow.

    Just mho.

Andy gets so far up in my bsuiness that he pisses me off too!!! If i ever meet him i’m not sure if i will hug him or smack him…lol..lol..lol “Just Kidding” I know i will probably hug him or at the very least shake his hand with life saving sincerity.. Andy is the best teacher i have ever heard, I have listned to his CD’s OVER and OVER and OVER and read his books the same way… As a teacher he makes the best case i have ever heard for the dependablity of the bible as being a trustworthy factual history and not a bunch of made up stories…..

  21. AE 8 September 2007 at 6:14 pm #

I understand the wording and admire your passion. But I agree that the word ‘piss’ isn’t necessary to communicate this message. (I like the rest of your approach, though… creative.)

Jesus wasn’t sinning when he flipped the tables. It’s assumptive to equate the passion he showed for his father’s house with the passion that’s communicated in profane language. One is holy. The other is worldly.

But I do appreciate the message as a whole. Thanks for sharing it.

  22. Jim 9 September 2007 at 4:14 am #

I got online this morning thinking about how great Andy’s sermon was going to be (part 3 of 4 on how to BE rich) and came across your blog. You drew me in with that vulgar statement, but I think it actually reads perfectly.

Of course it is worldly, of course it is vulgarity, it has to be. It obviously is written from an egocentric perspective and is meant to illustrate a spiritual conflict. Worldly desires are alluring; spiritual awareness requires work.

To continue with the theme, in contemporary vernacular, “you know it’s hard out here these days for a pimp.” Uh, I mean, Christian.

  23. Joe Underwood 20 September 2007 at 5:42 am #

In my humble opinion, Kevin, Stu, and AE made some good comments above.

Ephesians 5:4 is a verse which should be applied when we choose our words as we communicate. “and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.” (NASB)

I realize that the temptation is always there, even for us as Pastors, to use “shock value” to grab the attention of those who are listening, but we dare not leave Eph 5:4 behind in our choice of language.

I don’t think it is necessary for us to lower our language to that of the world in order for us to be salt and light to impact our world for Jesus.

That’s just my opinion on this subject and thanks for letting me express it.

    Joe

In response to the cussing, or lack there of. The words “piss” and “ticked” and things to that nature are nothing short of what I like the classify as “Christian Cuss Words”. Do you think we are tricking God by taking words that are not considered “cuss words” in using them in place of cuss words? He knows our hearts guys. Plus, what you’ve said in your head you’ve committed in your heart.

    You’re right. You know what?
we need more pastors like Andy Stanley to really tick off American chruchgoers.

I think we would be shocked to realize how many people in our churches are not bearing fruit as Jesus says in John 15.

Los, I’m witcha man! First time I ever heard Andy I was glued, and I’m glued for life. This guy seems to know me like an open book. Depth and authenticity, that’s him. Love the guy! Love you too, bruda!

  30. Tammy L 1 April 2008 at 9:27 am #

What you are referring to is not a person “pissing you off”, but rather the conviction the Holy Spirit of God. I am saddened to see such vile language on a site that is about being devoted to following Christ. “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this shold not be.” Jas 3:10

    ironic now….

  33. Gerri 10 May 2008 at 5:15 pm #

I came to this site because I wonder if this young man is the son of Pastor Charles Stanley who is the favorite of myself and many of my friends. I still don’t know but I hope not because I think his heart might hurt to see this choice of language. Do you realize that the word “p___” originally meant the bodily function of elimination? Why in the world would a real Christian choose to use that kind of term to express irritation? My heart hurts to see it on a site that ministers to the unsaved as it sure isn’t consistent with the character of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ nor His Father our dear Creator. Please change it soon, and check if you are really saved…for nothing in the world is as important to you as being certain of that beyond a doubt, and a Christian’s fruit will show what vine it is attached to. I’ll sincerely be praying.

  34. Ken 12 June 2008 at 7:09 pm #

While I find it vulgar to use language that doesn’t imply the difference we are to make in the world, even when that language is used in the KJV, it concerns me more that so much Andy Stanley worship courses through this blog. I am not sure that is his message or intention. Praise God an effective messenger has been raised up, but let’s not lose the message in the glory of the messenger.

  35. Bob Corry 16 June 2008 at 6:23 pm #

Several thousand years ago, the term Christian was a term used in a less than flattering way refer to the followers of Christ. People probably were told not to use the word. We obviously don’t use it in the same way now. Linguistics show us that our language is always changing. Try reaching out to street people, you would be surprised how fast you get less hung up on their speech and how excited you get seeing them respond to Christ. Very rough around the edges, but sincere. However you say it, I’m glad the Holy Spirit is speaking to you.

hahaha, oh man, I feel for you Los. I know this post is mad old sorry.

My husband (former youth pastor, turned worship leader, turned ?) recieved a scathing phonecall from a parent once for using the word “crap” in his sermon. It concerns me that people can get so distracted by their own preferances for word use and miss the point of the message, or even question the messangers salvation!

Keep up the good work, we are both fans of your site.

p.s. I just realized you changed the blog to “ticked” I guess sometimes we just pick our battles ;-)

I'm the coolest hippest guy I know:-) I love Andy, Rob, Ed, Erwin, and all those guys God has gifted with amazing teaching gifts that change and challenge me. I thank God for them. They make a difference. We can all learn from them. They're critics should be silenced by the fruits they all bear.

I've never heard them say piss, crap, or any other language they think would make them "cool". Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. That's my two cents. Honestly, it really doesn't make you relate any better because you use say those words. I said "shit" in front of my mom when I was 13….Ivory soap tastes like it:-)

Dude, I feel the same way as you. Keep on expressing yourself in whatever language you feel the need to and don't mind the critics.

I love your approach to this topic. I realize this blog is a little old…but the message is clear. I’m glad God puts certain people in our lives to stir us up. If not, we might never reach all that God has called and prepared for us to accomplish in this lifetime. i’ve been studying other preachers lately…Andy Stanley is just one of them. But what I love about Andy Stanley is that he is so clear, he is passionate and he makes it look so easy. I know it’s all the preparation he puts into his messages but its such a blessing to be challenged by great men of God like him!
