Prayer Requests
A question that is spinning in my dome is…
So when we all sit around in our little circles and share our prayer requests with each other, then we close our eyes and repeat them to God, what do you think He is thinking?
A few thoughts come to mind…
“Hey guys!!! You just said them OUT LOUD and to each other!!! I’m not deaf!!!”
“OK. Now that we covered those things I already knew about, how about some conversation?”
“So when are you going to stop saying prayers and start PRAYING?”
…?????????????

This can all be blamed on Andy Stanley’s podcast.

I agree – kinda. Seems goofy. I sometimes think it’s pointless.
But at the same time, there’s something about sharing and then BEING prayed for at that point of need that does powerful things for the person. And I think the direct asking of God of the things matters. On one hand we’re talking to each other. On the other we’re talking to God.
I can pray for myself, but having others pray for my needs is important too. (and likewise, having the opportunity to pray for others’ needs is important.)
I haven’t heard the sermons from Andy you’re talking about yet, though. And if it was between my opinion and Andy’s, I’d go with Andy’s
.
I didn’t grow up in a church, unless you count skipping mass after flunking out of Catechism. It really used to bother me that I couldn’t pray like my friends who were raised in the church. Until that day when my church friend pulled me aside and said I love how you pray like you’re talking to God, not the people listening in. Our church believes in touching (the good kind) and we lay hands on each other. I can pray like that for hours.
A few years ago, I started a fairly active prayer life. This was in response to bipolar disorder and 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. I’ve found that “Daily Walking Close to Thee” has kept me sane – literally. It’s two-fold. I read His Word, then I talk to Him about it. It’s very refreshing.
Prayer is a conversation with God I have constantly and it keeps me close to HIM…love DAD
Well for one thing, you can be sure then that your request actually gets prayed for.
Maybe we should just share the request while praying. Then it won’t be so tempting to gossip and give advice on how to solve the problem you’re asking God to handle.
There’s nothing like that old prayer request “We need to pray for Sally who has really been drinking a lot of wine lately and fell down getting to her mailbox Saturday. Bless her heart.”
isn’t that funny. I sometimes wonder about stuff like that. like maybe prayer requests are more for other people instead of for God. My other problem, I think of these things while I should be praying…
i’ve often wondered this as well. especially now since we get a lot of notes saying, “we’re praying for you, your staff and your church” but are they really?
