I got an email from Todd this weekend asking me about the handheld digital recorder I use for my podcast stuff.
The Zoom H4
I thought I would share the love with the rest of you.
This thing is a beast. It handles all the aspects of recording needs I can throw at it.
I use it for ‘field recording” interviews.
I use it to record the band on Sundays.
I use it for song ideas.
I use it to multi track on its 2 Gig SD card.
I use it as an audio interface to my Mac.
It is one of the tools I use most frequently on a weekly basis.

There you have it. You need it. Go get it.

You record the band on Sundays? Could you elaborate? I mean, how well does that come out?

How does it stand up next to the H2? I have been looking at the H2 for a multimedia (photo voice) project I have been thinking about. Help me out man, I don’t want to waste my $$

I must commend Carlos. A) He responded to my email in a timely, professional manner B)He linked me in an actual post, which for worship leader-bloggers is like winning an Grammy (or Dove, more realistically.)

However, he ended his email with the phrase “love and kisses.” Does anybody know if this is how Carlos normally signs off on emails to strangers who live thousands of miles away?

Anybody ever experienced a little “too much love” from Los?

    Anyone?

These guys from Zoom really could cramp big features in small spaces. How is it as a audio interface? Should I go with a quality Midiman soundcard with no portability or this baby with great portablity?

I’m still curious as to how well this thing records the band on Sunday morning? I mean is it plugged into an out from the board or just using the mic on the Zoom to get a general sound?

    Rags,
I really wouldn’t use this to replace a standard interface, just supplement with the portability feature of it. It acts as an interface because it has a USB out. However, if you’re looking at it thinking “hey I can use this as a four input interface”, yes you can, but it only records in 16bit when it’s in 4 track mode. Not bad when you’re recording those long jam sessions, or doing the occasional voiceover, but not recommended if you’re trying to put an album together.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done albums in 16 bit, but you’ll do better to get an inexpensive interface that allows 24 bit with a couple mic pre’s thrown in. Just my .02.
