Being authentic sucks because it means you are vulnerable -I am typically not a fan of personal vulnerability. Though I am a big fan of being really me. When you are judged or criticized or misunderstood, there is no mask, facade or buffer. The mark- whether right or not- is against your true self, and that can sting.

I think a big challenge is that people don’t really want the honesty and transparency of your authenticity. It’s messy, it makes them feel and can call them to do something.

People are looking for pretend perfect pastors. Their marriages must be perfect, their kids must appear to have it together, they must never swear or get angry. Just look at so many of the rock star pastors. Perfect, perfect, perfect. But in reality they’re just as screwed up as the rest of the bunch but have learned to fake it the best.

It’s hard to do. It’s hard to receive. We need to start teaching people to not only be authentic but to allow others the space to be as well.

16. Stuffy Christians on your church board (in a fairly traditional church) see authenticity on your blog and email the entire board and staff to call a meeting because of links to trash like YouTube and MySpace by a pastor.

(he must not know that all the pastors on staff have their own MySpace.)

Sorry. Still a bad taste from that one. Hope he doesn’t come here and see this comment. Not worried though. There’s plenty here to tweak him here before he ever gets to the clicking on “comments” part.

I teach Crucial Conversations to my school staff. The first item of the day is, “Start with the Heart”, which essentially to check your motives when you’re talking with somebody. I believe that pure intentions are the baseline of authenticity. Then, act from there.
