From the Blogging Basement

Posted on 07. May, 2008 by loswhit in Weblogs

Lynse Leanne had a cool post today linking over here. She talked about the post that got her blogging. It was here. And it reminded me. So I put it in the Best Of category over to the right. So I am going to repost it.
Go ahead. Where do you sit? What camp do you belong to?

……………………..

Picture 3-3So I have been catching a vibe lately around the blogoshphere. There are camps forming. A few camps.

The Evangelists
These are the zealots. They preach blogging like Salvation may be found. They check their stats a few times a day. They blog multiple times a day. They convert one new blogger a day. A lunch will not be had without some pitch about blogging being able to change ones life. From the very core. They know more about your life than you do. They Digg everyday. They YouTube everyday. They comment on 20 blogs at a time in order to stay in the loop. They read blogs only in RSS readers. More than likely, they have had a marital argument about blogging. I am one of these.
Hello. My name is Carlos. And I’m a Blogger.

The Believers
These are the blogging faithful. They believe that there is TRUE community in this stuff. They post almost everyday. They comment a lot. They try to grow their blogs. They try to actually have relationships. They pick up the phone and CALL other bloggers. They see the future of communication existing in a large way through blogs. Probably to their fault. But none the less, they blog. Their motto is, “Blogging is fun, Blogging is phat, Link to me, and I’ll link you back.”

The Seekers
These are the back row Baptists. They are blogging every couple of days. They look at the blogging believers like they are nuts. They play it safe and keep it pretty narrative in their posts. They wonder what is it about this blogosphere that can help them. They definitely don’t want to be like the Evangelists, but maybe becoming a believer wouldn’t be so bad. They READ blogs daily. Searching. For something. They feel involved when in “Blogging Conversations”. They don’t think blogging is fun. They still have a MySpace. It is almost a chore. But they blog.

The Lost
These are the ones who still ask…”Whats a Blog?”

The Atheists
These are the ones who feel persecuted by the bloggers. “Why must they (bloggers) ALWAYS talk about it? They must have watched You’ve Got Mail one too many times.” They will NEVER blog. They will NEVER read a blog. They make fun of all who do. They make me nervous.

So. I carry the coin in my pocket.
Where do you fall?
Los

I’m a seeker! I do still have a myspace and facebook, and i LOVE facebook way better than blogging. I go through moods where i feel like i have something to blog about…other days i feel like it’s not worth reading. I definitely do enjoy reading several blogs everyday…and i try to comment as much as i can! :-)

  2. bob robbins 7 May 2008 at 3:54 pm #

can i be an evageliever? i fall somewhere in between.

  3. Molly 7 May 2008 at 4:13 pm #

I am with Bob. I am an evageliever. And this post reminds me that I have NOT been to YouTube today.

    Thanks for the reminder.
    I was to busy Tweeting.

  4. Heidi Reed 7 May 2008 at 4:20 pm #

Definitely an evangelist and I almost don’t want to admit it. But I am totally into the stats thing. And I totally comment on other ppl’s blogs daily. Ok, several times a day!

  5. amg 7 May 2008 at 4:34 pm #

I’m somewhere between Seeker and Believer. Definitely closer to Believer. I read blogs other people’s blogs all the time. Don’t always comment, but always read. People I know, people I don’t know. Love your blog!

  6. Bella 7 May 2008 at 4:52 pm #

I think I am like Bob too! What about Bob? (I just had to say it) —I am a evangeliever! I haven’t quite got to Digg and YouTube or even Twitter…I am a mom too. And, I do have to prioritize somewhere. Maybe I am a traditionalist and just stick with the blog? Though, blogging has sucked me in…probably a little too much. I love LINK LOVE…

    Bella

  7. erin 7 May 2008 at 4:53 pm #

i am a believer!! even though you comment on 20 blogs a day i have never seen a comment from you anywhere :) where are you leaving your mark?

  8. Molly Moore 7 May 2008 at 4:54 pm #

Okay, so you left people like me out… those who don’t have a blog but kinda want one (well, I have a family blog… it’s private… my husband’s all freaked about our information being out there for everyone to see… whatever).

Okay, so back to my type… we don’t have blogs but we’d sort like to. We just feel like we don’t really have much to offer. We go back and forth about whether or not we should actually dive in. We read other’s blogs and enjoy them… just haven’t made that leap.

So would that make us agnostic?

    Just wondering.

  9. Rick 7 May 2008 at 5:06 pm #

I’m definitely a believer, although I live inside of Google Reader, venturing out only when necessary to leave a comment or use the restroom. Or both, if I happen to have my laptop on at the time.

  10. Alex 7 May 2008 at 5:08 pm #

seeker on the way to believing.

  11. samburke 7 May 2008 at 5:20 pm #

definitely an evangelist. the fact that me and my friends can’t have a single conversation without our blogs or someone’s blog coming up in the conversation is proof of that.

  12. Marvin Nelson 7 May 2008 at 5:20 pm #

Totally with Bob up top..I’m and evangeliever. I love to blog…still working on getting people to come and read it…how do you do that??? Love your stuff Los!

  13. Soozieque 7 May 2008 at 5:21 pm #

Sadly, a seeker. But I want to believe!!!

  14. Jenna 7 May 2008 at 5:25 pm #

Yep, I’m an evangeliever like the others. Though, I must say I am rapidly progressing toward pure evangelist. I think I’m driving my husband crazy! We’ve not yet had a marital argument over blogging. As long as I leave his WoW alone he leaves my blogging alone.

Holy crap. That makes us sound like the geekiest couple to ever live…

  15. noochymama 7 May 2008 at 5:53 pm #

all i have to say is that i am glad my husband (samburke) admitted to being an evangelist…because we CERTAINLY have argued about blogging for sure.

  16. Crystal Renaud 7 May 2008 at 5:54 pm #

i’m now in-between an the evangelist & the believer.

  17. Wendy 7 May 2008 at 6:04 pm #

I am with Bob too! I am a evageliever. Your post totally made me laugh!

  18. Jason 7 May 2008 at 6:05 pm #

I am between Seeker and Believer but only been at this for about 2 weeks.

  19. Rebecca Moon 7 May 2008 at 6:05 pm #

I’m an introverted believer. Cause there’s no way in heck I’d ever call anybody. I don’t like talking with strangers. But I like writing with strangers. You know, in the non-creepy way.

  20. sarah 7 May 2008 at 6:06 pm #

well, based on your definitions…it appears i am an Evangelist turned…Seeker? Believer? not sure which.

  21. The Brown Kid 7 May 2008 at 6:07 pm #

I’m a Emergent Blogger. I dabble in a bit of all of these.

  22. Chelsea 7 May 2008 at 6:23 pm #

Emergent blogger! That made me crack up.
I’m a seeker, mostly. In blogging, not in my faith.

  23. Read Scott 7 May 2008 at 6:32 pm #

Evangelist. In fact, I get paid to be an blogging evangelist, so it’s cool.

  24. aaron escamilla 7 May 2008 at 7:02 pm #

i am a seeker blogger, but am trying to convert into an evangelist. it is quite difficult to move from one group to the others. but like most seekers i am held back by time constraints, witty sayings, and to many sites to update. but glad that i could come to the altar of the internet and confess my short coming. maybe in the future I will be more of a blogger

  25. Nate Westerfield 7 May 2008 at 7:23 pm #

I’d have to say that I’m a Believe-a-Seeker if that is possible? Might get nailed on this one? :)

  26. Nikki 7 May 2008 at 7:24 pm #

I am a believer, newly converted from seeker by the the master Evangelist – Carlos.

  27. alicia 7 May 2008 at 7:52 pm #

    Probably a believer… kinda :)

  28. Aaron 7 May 2008 at 7:58 pm #

    Believer.

  29. jking 7 May 2008 at 8:01 pm #

I would have to say I am in between a Seeker and Believer. I love the idea of a blog, but I stress because I can’t keep up with it or sometimes I feel like no one is reading and wonder how I can change that. But I have to say…I love the community…the thoughts…and all the stuff that comes with it…twitter..etc etc.

  30. 6YearMed 7 May 2008 at 8:18 pm #

okay the person who posted ‘emergent blogger’

    that is out of control.

funny, but out of control ;)

  31. Tymm 7 May 2008 at 8:26 pm #

I am a believer in blogs with a point. I’m an atheist if your blog tells me what you had for dinner – or worse yet – has ever posted a picture of your dinner.

But I have absolutely reaped the benefits of the adoption community blogs and really do feel they serve a gigantic purpose in the whole process.

    Blog on.

  32. Lisa E 7 May 2008 at 9:15 pm #

So, is it bad to still have a myspace? Or am I just way behind? I do love reading blogs (this is one of my favs) and occassionally comment, but haven’t taken the time to start a regular blog. I have had a few blog entries on my myspace page, but haven’t gotten into a routine yet. And like, no pressure or anything, to have a blog that compares to the best of you! Admittedly, I’m a little intimidated. Now what was bad about myspace again?

  33. Karl Fisher 8 May 2008 at 3:49 am #

i’m a believer that still suffers from occasional bouts of inconsistency and slight identity crisis. maybe i need blog meds.

  34. John Blanchard 8 May 2008 at 5:13 am #

    I’m a believer for sure!

  35. Rachel 8 May 2008 at 5:52 am #

Between seeker and believer. I don’t blog daily, though I have in the past. I go through the blogroll almost every day, but don’t comment on all of them. I probably check stats every few days. Myspace is getting more annoying to me by the minute. I’m a Facebook junkie.

I think that covers it. And I agree with 6YearMed. The Emergent blogger comment was freakin’ awesome!

  36. Nate 8 May 2008 at 5:54 am #

    i’m a believer!…though i haven’t made phone calls to anyone i hadn’t actually met in person

  37. Mark Thomas 8 May 2008 at 6:13 am #

I fall into the Evangelist category. But I don’t post several times a day. I like to keep the content meaningful (for the most part) and cut down on the fluff.

Denver is a blogging Mecca now because of me and a few of my close friends.

You could probably pigeon-hole me into the “Believer” section. I’d be an “Evangelist” but I just don’t have the time. When I do take baby steps over into “Evangelist” territory, most likely an arguement will ensure with my wife. At that point, I convince myself it’s not worth the fight so I slide back down to being a “Believer.”

    Make sense?

  39. bobby 8 May 2008 at 7:29 am #

I posted a comment on the original post, and thought it only fair to update my status and those of my family in the world of blogging.

I have now moved comfortably and deep into the evangelist camp. I think I can almost claim Greg Laurie status now, only hindered by perhaps not having the same popularity and audience. So maybe I’m now more like one of the listings in that horrible evangelists directory we got at the last denominational meeting we were at. Don’t know still that I will ever hit Billy Graham status, but that is only out of lack of audience, not fervor.

The best part is, my wife has since moved through the believer stage and, dare I say, joined me in ministry as an evangelist. No more blog arguments. It’s so great serving together. We have seen most of our immediate and extended families begin to blog and continue to spread the good news among our communities of influence.

Maybe we should all start organizing some blog crusades to get people “saved!” You in?

  40. Brian 8 May 2008 at 7:46 am #

I’m an evangeliever as well. Posting was a chore at one time. Now it is second nature. I post several times a day and feel as though it is some kind of release for me. I haven’t had the argument, yet. I’m in a small town where blogging hasn’t really caught on yet. So a few friends and I are trying to break “new ground” in this area. Any tips on helping my blog grow?

  41. Fayola 8 May 2008 at 8:38 am #

I want to submit the “Backslider” category — those of us who blog regularly for a few months, then inexplicably fall away when we lack the discipline to post regularly. We apologize for not showing up; we make excuses, we procrastinate; we try to redeem the situation by commenting on other blogs; but we truly believe that one day — one day! — we will blog again.

    That’d be me. :)

  42. emily 8 May 2008 at 9:01 am #

I’m a believer. I talk on a regular basis to several real friends that started as blog friends! I have told my children to never do what mommy has done, don’t ever meet someone on the internet, give them your phone number and invite them over for dinner!

Our adoption has taken twice as long as we ever thought it would, and the blog community has talked me off the ledge on multiple occasions.

  43. gbrad@mag 8 May 2008 at 10:07 am #

I just got my feet into the blogging ocean and I can’t swim.

  44. gbrad@mag 8 May 2008 at 10:21 am #

Blogging is a trip!!! I see why people become evangelists.

  45. gbrad@mag 8 May 2008 at 10:22 am #

I don’t think I’m interesting enough to blog, though

  46. Kyle 8 May 2008 at 10:31 am #

I am a Evangeliever…if that makes any sense.

I’m not quite to your level, even though some would disagree with me.

I do love blogging though…and commenting…and talking about my blog…and converting nonbloggers to bloggers…CRAP, I’m an Evangelist.

  47. Kalyn 8 May 2008 at 11:18 am #

I’m an evangeliever for sure…I look up to true blog evangelists, and I want to be one when I grow up! Ha ha.

  48. Rachel Rowell 8 May 2008 at 11:52 am #

I fall somewhere between a believer and an evangelist. But hey, just 6 months ago I was most definitely part of the “the lost crowd.”

I’m hooked now though. Like the Holy Spirit, once you get a taste of Him, this is good stuff and you just CAN’T go back to or imagine life without it.

  49. Amber Cox 8 May 2008 at 12:45 pm #

    I’M A BELIEVER!! Wahoo!!

  50. Rhen @yestheyareallmine 8 May 2008 at 6:02 pm #

    I am a believer baby! :)

  51. cathi 8 May 2008 at 9:39 pm #

i’m cathi, and I’ve admitted to being a blog addict on 4 different posts within the past 10 minutes…
My husband is in denial. Please pray.
We regularly have “discussions” on who gets to post what…try explaining that one to a therapist!

  52. Renee Garcia 9 May 2008 at 4:56 pm #

    I’m a believer! hahaha

  53. Tony Chavez 11 May 2008 at 1:03 pm #

Somewhere between a seeker and believer. Mainly because my biggest excuse for not blogging more is TIME! I love it though!

  54. CLowe 12 May 2008 at 6:15 pm #

i think i’m somewhere between an evangelist and a believer. i’m crazy about blogging, but i’m not yet trying to convert all my friends… i can barely get them to read blogs (much less subscribe)… maybe i should “shake the dust from my feet” and find some new friends ;)

  55. Rick 14 May 2008 at 8:06 am #

    Seeker. For certain…

  56. dorothy 16 June 2008 at 3:37 pm #

Los, I am ashamed to admit though I have seen you out in the cyberworld…today is the first day I’ve actually linked over to your blog, oh this is funny, I forget where I found you, I was just clicking around. Please forgive me…
Stuff Christians Like converted me to a believer…
I killed my myspace last week…
I would say I am an evangebeliver. I don’t Digg yet, but, I do youtube. I don’t twitter yet, but I have four blogs…
Even thinking of cutting off my unbelievers friends, the ones who started this journey with me and then have stalled in their walk. Though I am still trying to encourage them

christian business cards A book is a friend a good book is a good friend. It will talk to you when you want it to talk, and it will keep still when you want it to keep still and there are not many friends who know enough to do that.
