Please Don’t Shoot!!! I’ll Write I’ll Write!!

Posted on 04. Jun, 2008 by loswhit in Authenticity

Lately I have been given some rad opportunities to write stuff. You know. Like kinda important stuff. Like the opposite of my vasectomy posts or my shake tests.
If someone stuck a gun to my head and made me completely switch careers I would tell them I want to be a writer. To write about stuff like how I made my life suck and how you can do otherwise.
If the same dude who stuck a gun to my head, stuck the gun to yours…
What would you want to do in life if YOU HAD to do something different than you are doing now?

I have a running list of 100 would love to-do careers. Does it count if you have done this for years but don’t get paid doing it? If that is the case, I would love to actually get paid as a photog/blogger instead of being a freelancer (emphasis on the free part), otherwise, I could go with race card driver.

  9. Aaron 5 June 2008 at 2:43 am #

You mean, ponder how I found myself in a position in life where I had a gun stuck to my head?

I would definitely love to be a Production/Video Director for a church. Sounds like a weird dream I know, but I’ve been doing this voluntarily all my life and I love it, Just wish I could get paid for it and if some guy had a gun and made me well maybe I could find a way.

  17. CLowe 5 June 2008 at 4:23 am #

I teach right now and that is great; but if I could do anything else I would do something in communications — graphic arts; public speaking; production….currently doing most of that on a voluntary basis at church but I would love to go back to school, get more in-depth training and do that as a career…

  18. Kelli 5 June 2008 at 4:27 am #

    Let’s see….
I’m in between professions right now, so although I love kids, I’d sack my part time child care job, and do one or all of the following…

    1. Return to full -time worship leading/traveling as a part of a ministry or crusade worship team
    2. writer
    3. broadway singer/actress

  25. Kyle 5 June 2008 at 5:10 am #

I would work with an organization such as TWLOHA or Mercy Ministries, or create an organization of my own that speaks truth, hope, and healing into teenagers or young adults who deal with depression, cutting, thoughts of suicide, etc.

    That’s my passion.

I would love to be a seamstress. I make some really cool clothes! If I could just get some “spotlight” people to wear my stuff…

I loooooooooooooooooove singing, and yes, I’m good. (don’t worry. I’m not getting the big head. I’ve just been told this all my life. Besides, my parents could really “belt” in their day.)

And call me suicidal, but I love me some youth ministry. I love the kiddos (12-19 yrs old) I work with right now.

  27. Chad Maag 5 June 2008 at 5:19 am #

I’ve always said that if I wasn’t a graphic designer I would want to be working in Radio broadcasting. But not in front of a microphone. I’d be a producer or engineer.

  28. Alyse C 5 June 2008 at 5:21 am #

    Pastery Chef

  29. Summer Kelly 5 June 2008 at 5:23 am #

I’m a wife & Mom first, but I am also a writer (I’m writing a book!). Recently, however, I have gone back to school so now I can add “student” to that list of titles. My next title goal?
    BOOK-PUBLISHED AUTHOR =)

But if I had a gun held to my head?
    Hmmm… Motivational Speaker
Then perhaps I could talk him into giving me the gun.

You are a great writer, Carlos, as is Heather. You both have the gift to evoke empathy for whatever you are going through/doing. I thoroughly enjoy reading what you write & I especially love the videos. They crack me up!

    Recording engineer/producer.

  33. Chadwick 5 June 2008 at 5:39 am #

No question about it – if I could walk away today and do anyting else… I’d fly airplanes. Took lessons a few years ago and got the bug, but my bank account can’t feed my obsessions.

  34. Carole Turner 5 June 2008 at 5:44 am #

Run for Office or be a missionary in Africa.

  35. Deneen 5 June 2008 at 5:55 am #

I would actually take the time to write the books that have been rolling around in my head. Then, with the proceeds, I would travel the world with my Bible, laptop and camera and teach people the tangible love of Christ. Then I’d write another book. Then I’d travel some more…you get the picture.

  36. Tymm 5 June 2008 at 6:16 am #

    Rapper
    Writer
    Full Time Missionary in Africa
    FilmMaker
    Professional Runner
    Guitarist

    not really in any order…

  37. Nick 5 June 2008 at 6:20 am #

I don’t believe in guns, so this exercise frightens me. But for the sake of corporate participation, I would be a photojournalist or run some non-profit justice organization.

  38. Nick 5 June 2008 at 6:20 am #

I don’t believe in guns (or pointing them at peoples heads), so this exercise frightens me. But for the sake of corporate participation, I would be a photojournalist or run some non-profit justice organization.

  39. John Ireland 5 June 2008 at 6:39 am #

    easy…Air Force pilot

(i previously was in the USAFR as a medic, and do have a private pilot certificate; though corrected to 20/20, just don’t meet the vision requirements to fly military).

oh, yeah…then i would want to join NASA as an astronaut. :)

live on a boat and let the money and waves roll in.

  41. Marvin Nelson 5 June 2008 at 6:55 am #

  43. Coni Andress 5 June 2008 at 7:01 am #

sing, tell stories of my life, share how God picked me out of the gutter and blessed me beyond my wildest dreams… then, I would wake up and do some more hair. Maybe be a personal hairstylist for some one really cool.

  44. yeidy 5 June 2008 at 7:11 am #

I would be a food network star or a judge for a american idol but then I would need to be drunk to do that so lets stick with food network star, yeah thats my dream job :)

  45. Marcus Hackler 5 June 2008 at 7:14 am #

  46. Steph 5 June 2008 at 7:16 am #

  47. Shannon Smith 5 June 2008 at 7:16 am #

I’d be an aggregater for mission opportunities.

I’d build contacts and relationships with people in need and organizations serving those in need. When people not gifted to see needs wanted to get involved somewhere, they’d come to me and I’d help them get involved.

I sort of do this now, but not for a living. I see more needs than I can meet myself. I just wish I had more time to focus on those, but with work and people constantly pointing guns at my head asking me questions, I don’t have as much time as I would like.

I’d do that or I would be a relief pitcher for a MLB team; maybe the Braves.

  48. Steve Dunham 5 June 2008 at 7:28 am #

    1. Travel writer.
    2. Own my own restaurant and be the head chef.
    3. Own my own hotel in some exotic land.

    5. Run a non profit that helps children in some third world country.

In no particular order of preference.

  49. Mandy 5 June 2008 at 7:41 am #

I’d be a ballroom dancer, or a ballet dancer or a tap dancer…or just teach any of those. I used to be but gave it all up to be a SAHM. Those are expensive hobbies & kids (of course) come first.

  50. Tiffani Barnes 5 June 2008 at 7:41 am #

I’d be an astronaut! Space and the Human Space Flight program fascinates me! If space tourism ever becomes financially reasonable I’m SO THERE! (or if I become independently wealthy). We are going back to the moon and on to Mars and I can’t wait to see it. “We choose to go to the moon…we choose to go to the Moon and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard.” -Kennedy.

  51. Amy Storms 5 June 2008 at 7:43 am #

    1. Supreme Court justice. I just like the idea of getting to read lots of books and share my opinion with everyone for the rest of my life. (I do these things already, but it would be great to be paid for it.)

    2. Painter. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body but I would love to set up an easel on a hillside in Tuscany. So mostly I just want to go to Italy.

i would steal rachel ray’s job

  53. Jessica 5 June 2008 at 8:12 am #

Wow! This is a timely post. Right now, I am working to develop and start a new ministry at my church, Women of Destiny. Gun to your head – what is your heart’s desire who are you called to be…

If I had a gun to my head, I would be home with my kids and mentoring young women.

  60. Billy B 5 June 2008 at 10:36 am #

  65. hollybird 5 June 2008 at 7:03 pm #

I’d definitely write! I am half way finished with a book about my life (not that anyone will be interested in reading it but me :) ). I started it simply for therapeutic purposes, but it’s become so cathartic and healing, and well, quite frankly, I think someone else can learn from my junk, so why not?? My goal is to complete it this year, then try to have it published. Any suggestions, tips, etc???

  66. Laura 5 June 2008 at 10:01 pm #

Missionary whose focus is on children (teaching, loving, encouraging, training)

  67. Jesse 6 June 2008 at 10:06 am #

I’m probably judo-kicking the guy with the gun to my head in the junk, take his gun and run off.

Then imma go fishing or something. I would love to be a community manager for a video game.

  68. TLC 6 June 2008 at 11:09 pm #

You know what they say…those who can’t do…write! No, seriously, I would definitely write. I would love to have stretches of uninterrupted time (where no one wants anything, touches me or wants to me to mediate a fight) where I can just lose myself in the process of writing.
