So here we sit.
4 Weeks in.
The first week we had 72 of you guys saying…YES!!! I am going to get healthy and lose that MuffinTop!!!
Let’s see how many people fill are here at week 4.
I’m thinking by Tuesday this widget will have 40ish people in it.
But SUPRISE ME!!! You can do it. Trust me.

So this week was a great week for me.
I have 2 goals.
1. Run a marathon in 18 weeks.
2. Weigh in at 175

See below how I am doing…

My runs are displayed below.
[RSS I think you have to come to the site to see it]

Yea. You are not seeing things.
9 MILES this morning.
And it was tough.
Randy and Spence would be proud.
Some people have been asking me what marathon training program I am using.
I’m using Hal Higdon’s Novice One program.
It is a great program and I have been really pleased with it so far.
Remember. 5 weeks ago, I had not run more than 2 miles only like 3 times in the past 15 years.
I was sucking wind and barfing on my runs.
And now I’m a champ in short shorts…

OK people. Go back to that week one link and encourage everyone not to fall off the wagon.
Your Turn…

What has been the hardest thing so far about your RagamuffinTop Challenge?

The hardest part of trying to lose weight so far is either gaining weight or staying the same even though I’ve spent the whole week working out and eating healthy. It can be frustrating.

    Challenged by the challenge {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/eGjOzF4J5r_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”Challenged by the challenge ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/rX9qKqERh4″}}}

Well I didnt lose any this week but I didnt gain so I guess thats a plus…right? But an even more positive is that I did lose 1/2 from the waist this week. Yeah!!!

  4. Jay 21 June 2008 at 12:04 pm #

I am having a hard time to find the motivation to exercise, especially since I am losing a little weight with diet alone. I have the time, but lack the motivation. How does everyone else do it?

  5. Amy (Dandelion Seeds) 21 June 2008 at 12:19 pm #

Have you looked into the “Daniel Fast”? Check out the following sites…
    http://danielfast.wordpress.com/daniel-fast-food-list/
    http://www.gotquestions.org/Daniel-fast.html

I’m not sure how great it would be for your training, but it really reveals all the other “crap”. We quit cooking in butter, got the “good” peanut butter, no sugar, and have been snacking on fruit instead of doritos! :)

  6. Juliepersinger 21 June 2008 at 12:19 pm #

hang in there Los – I’m sure your body is trying to figure out what’s going on. Let us know that your dietician friends have to say.

  7. kevin 21 June 2008 at 12:22 pm #

Well, I did it by being sick early in the week. Which means eating very little. Then I ate healthy throughout the week. I didn’t bring my lunch to work like i did in the past, but chose healthy alternatives when we went out to eat.

Didn’t have the energy or motivation to work out either since i’m losing weight.

I did make a goal though to do so many pushups and situps before i jump in the shower to start the day. Just a little sweatin before the day start hasn’t hurt anything.

  8. Joni 21 June 2008 at 12:57 pm #

I don’t want to talk about it. No, I do.

The hardest thing? I don’t have an “out”. I have committed to this because change needs to happen. I’m uncomfortable denying myself. I don’t like self discipline. But I have to keep going. THAT’S the hardest thing. I can’t quit. I have no good excuse.

  9. Chadwick 21 June 2008 at 1:18 pm #

The hardest thing for me is to not get bored. My ADD personality has to keep new input going all the time. When I leave my car at work – I really have no choice but to ride my bike to get there. I have to keep finding new ways to ride to work so I don’t get bored.

336 hours with no cokes has helped a little – but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t craving one right now.

    Go Team Go!!!!!

Thanks for the shout. Enjoyed the run. Let me know if you and H are up for some rolling hills at the mountain next Saturday for the 10-mile run.

  11. eryn 21 June 2008 at 3:03 pm #

keep it up! nine miles is a lot. that’s very impressive.

i heard a good way to loose 5 pounds id cut out soda out of your diet. i don’t know if you like soda drinker or not but that is something that you could do.

  12. Tony Steward 21 June 2008 at 3:12 pm #

I am finding that just eating better or just exercise alone doesn’t help me – it is only when I am dong both that I see results that motivate me to keep going. I’ve lost 9 lbs in 4 weeks so far – and I am not really doing anything spectacular – but I am well aware that will slow down once I get closer to my goal. (lose 35 pounds)

  13. tunz 21 June 2008 at 3:32 pm #

You are my hero, that is pretty inspirational. I am going to do this!

  14. Andy 21 June 2008 at 3:49 pm #

Results are good motivators but group exercise like a boot camp has been good for me. Having friends to hold you accountable is also good

  15. Nick 21 June 2008 at 6:51 pm #

I know people hate unsolicited advice and you probably already know this, but it is much harder to lose weight with aerobic style exercise alone. That is all I used to do, but then I focused on weights and it helped big time! I do not lift heavy weights, just enough to build some muscle. Muscle is the #1 fighter of fat, and you are right on with the diet. When I cut my calories and started watching them, I started losing a lot more. Good luck, you’ll get there!

  16. coni andress 21 June 2008 at 7:01 pm #

The hardest thing is being consistent. I do good for a day or two and then I give in to the craving for junk. Grrr. Makes me mad at myself.

  17. AnnieD 21 June 2008 at 8:39 pm #

The hardest thing for me has been fitting in enough exercise- my life FEELS so busy right now that it FEELS like I can’t make time.

Video/update coming by Monday- I am out of town until later tomorrow.

  18. Robin 21 June 2008 at 10:00 pm #

The hardest part is seeing s-l-o-w results. The smaller you are, the harder it is to lose those pesky pounds.
    I still am though! :-)

  19. Linds 21 June 2008 at 10:16 pm #

Hi there…just a little advice from someone who spent months at a dietician years ago… she weighed me weekly and took all my measurements. Often I lost no weight, but those weeks I lost inches all over the place. Go figure. So I suggest you do that. Measure arms, thighs, chest, waist, hips. I reckon you are losing inches, even if the weight stays the same!

  20. Brad Metzger 21 June 2008 at 10:48 pm #

Crash diet holmie. You’ve done it before. I did it for about 8 weeks and lost about 20 lbs. Counted calories like a mother, limiting myself to 2,100 calories/day following a basic 3-2-1 plan (3 parts carbs to 2 parts protien to 1 part fat).

I ran hard for about two years and it seemed to be much more effective at weight maintenance than weight loss. Eventually your body becomes immune to running or any one exercise that you do repeatedly.

So after the crash diet and years of running, in March I started training and more deliberately found various ways to shock my body. Accordingly, I’ll do weights 3 days a week, a day of plyometrics, a day of yoga or kickboxing, a day of core synergistics, and a day of pickup basketball, plus I mix in a 20 minute ab routine 3 days a weeks and I try to get in 2 five mile runs a week.
This training regimen has helped me lose 6-8 more pounds and redistribute weight from fat storage to muscle.

Hang in there. I know how demoralizing the scales can be. A week of no weight loss can be devestating to the psyche. You’ll figure out something that works for you.

    Los,

Hang in there, you’re doing awesome. If you keep it up the weight WILL come off. One suggestion for the running pain, I know it sounds crazy but… ice baths! and ibuprofin.

  22. Minnow 22 June 2008 at 8:03 am #

not using food to relieve stress.

Los…holding this week but not so bad given the FUN I had on vacation…looking forward to seeing you in SoCal and all that, bro!

  26. pinkcamojeep 22 June 2008 at 4:45 pm #

    Los,
I haven’t been posting weekly because I don’t have an awesome site to link to…..
but I’m working on the goal. I started at 176 (about 3-4 weeks before your challenge) but first posted at 172. I’ve gotten down to 168.5 ……..
which brings me to the hardest part: fighting the cravings. I’m okay for a few days or even a few weeks, then I start to lose and my body fights to put it back on. Ugh.
You asked about advice. I’m going to assume here that you probably consume more calories in your drinks than you realize. Starbucks and sodas… tea….You should do some checking and you’d be surprised at the number of calories are in sodas & cadillac coffees. Count drink calories for a few days and you may be shocked. Check it out. I’d advise you to drink only water and you’d be surprised at how much you would lose. You need the fluid for your runs anyway.
Way to go on your nine-miler!

The hardest part for me has been consistency. I need to get a good WHOLE week in.

  28. Shannon Smith 23 June 2008 at 4:36 am #

    Annie D,
Where are you? My wife is anxiously awaiting your video.

  29. Vane Brown 23 June 2008 at 7:25 am #

The hardest thing for me is that it’s summer vacation which means a lot of ice cream and going out – it’s difficult to eat right when you aren’t home. And, I want to sleep in so working out has been hard.

  30. deWeb 23 June 2008 at 8:11 am #

    yeah, come on.

  31. Liesl 23 June 2008 at 9:06 am #

Consistency has been tough for me. And the crazy OK summer heat…ugh. However, I am feeling more motivated and excited knowing that I must report on this each week. This challenge has been quite helpful!

  32. T 23 June 2008 at 9:46 am #

Ok, Ok, Ok – I finally decided to join in and do this thing. I wont’ have a video up till next week – but……I’ll do it. ugh. :(

  33. Marcelo 23 June 2008 at 9:53 am #

Hey, Los and friends… I’m in! I just did the reality check post and I am ready to start. Very soon I will share my ninja weight-loss techniques :0)

  34. cheri 23 June 2008 at 10:59 am #

hardest part? waiting on the found backpack update :)

also… getting the motivation to go outside and walk when it’s nice and cool inside….

maybe i should ask the neighbor if i can walk his dog… that would be easier than trying to walk either of my cats. :)

  35. Marcelo 23 June 2008 at 11:49 am #

I’ve just added a video on the post… check it out!

  36. Jessica 23 June 2008 at 2:56 pm #

It didn’t lose but didn’t gain. I was not up to par this week so the workouts kind of slipped out the window when I slept. I guess I needed some rest.

  37. Jad 24 June 2008 at 8:06 am #

Hardest thing: Been pretty tired, but I just need to go to bed earlier. Another hard part has been not seeing as rapid results as I wanted to. However, I know that with a little more time then I’ll be solid so it’s cool.

  38. TD 24 June 2008 at 9:35 am #

sorry i’m late, but just posted my weigh-in

  39. Laura 25 June 2008 at 5:08 am #

I’m so late, but at least I lost a couple pounds. Thank goodness!!

The hardest part? Being social and not eating what everyone else is eating. But I’m getting used to it.

  40. karla | looking towards heaven 25 June 2008 at 2:36 pm #

Carlos – I am cracking up at this because for the last 3 months I have been doing “The Amazing Adventures of Muffin” on my blog. I’ve been trying to get healthy and lose post-pregnancy weight so I’ve been tracking it in this way.

I use a photo of a muffin and place it on other photos.

I suppose I will have to join up with yours now as well!

    Blessings,
    Karla

OH – And I am training for a marathon too. So if anyone is looking for a female counter-part to what you are doing, I’d be happy to work as their encouragement as well!
