Mandela

It is Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday.
He is a hero of mine.
Who is a hero of yours you have never met and probably never will?

Bono; I think he has created some amazing music and done amazing things with his life for others, and that’s what makes a hero, i think, it’s living for others.

    Rene Yohe

Rene is the young lady who inspired the organization/movement TWLOH(To Write Love On Her Arms). Her story is powerful, full of grace, mercy, heartache, pain, hurt, but mostly of healing. Her story is real and honest.

    Ummm…Conan O’Brien?

But seriously. Oral Roberts is on my list, for reasons that many would not think. That man is a force to be reckoned with, even at 90-years young.

Frederick Douglass. We have very few following in his footsteps today, of which Thomas Sowell is one. Both men of great compassion and intellect. I’ll never meet either one.

    Rats.

Bono, Stephen Biko (he died on my 4th birthday), and Lance Armstrong- not for his cycling victories or controversies, but for his fortitude in fighting cancer and the fact he is still in the fight through his foundation.

Martin Luther. I once did a project on him and I was amazed to see all of the great things he did for Christianity.

Mary Beth Chapman….I have admired her for a very long time. When you see an amazing man who is loving people well, living life authentically and balancing ministry well you know that he has a good wife.

Maya Angelou. She seems to demonstrate such grace and wisdom. I would love to have her come and speak to my students (I teach high school English). Some of them embrace the idea of being a victim, and I think hearing from her might change that a bit.

For the record, I started to write Rich Mullins, but I couldn’t because I did meet him once, but only briefly. Does that still count?

    Oswald Chambers…

I’ve never seen been so challenged, sliced, humbled, and healed by the same writer. I’ll never be the same.

Andy Stanley. I’m not sure that any other person has provoked me, challenged me and encouraged me in my daily walk with Christ as much as Andy. (My wife and brother are also huge parts of my journey but they don’t count since, well, I have met them).

    Nice suggestions…

I’d go for Martin Smith from Delirious? and Louie Giglio.

They both have had a great impact on my walk with Jesus.

Last year I went to South Africa with a group from my school, and we went to Robben Island. It was probably the most powerful part of the trip for me. We got to stand on the ground, in the same cell, that he lived in. We were guided through by a man who was imprisoned on the island for several years, and he told us how they kept their hope, faith, and ideas alive. It was amazing.

People like that are my heroes.

    And St. Paul. He’s awesome.

On a mission trip to South Africa a young boy was so happy we came to his village to work, he cut a bunch of bananas down out of the tree in his yard and offered them to us. I have a picture of him handing them over. Don’t know his name, will never see him again, but he inspires me to give whatever I have, with thanks, to all in my life.

James Madison. He was younger than the other founding fathers, so he really came into maturity at the time the constitution was ready to be written, and he wrote most of it. He was such a good thinker.

Maria Montessori. She observed children and let them show her how to teach them, and her ideas really stand the test of time.
