Well said, Rick. Worship leaders definitely deal with conflicting perspectives and opinions. It is a difficult line to walk sometimes, especially when you are truly trying to serve the church and follow the Lord's leading. Many of us didn't ask to be put in this position. We are trying to be obedient. It would be much easier to be a "rock star" and do whatever I felt like doing. Instead, many of us sacrifice our preferences and opinions for the good of the body of Christ.

Be gentle.

Definitely. I call it "facilitating" worship rather than "leading" worship. Jesus is the one who draws us to Himself. We just try and make that as easy as we can, and follow His leading.

John 4:23 "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."

Toby,
When I attend a bigger church, I don't really like it because I feel like I'm being forced to shake hands with someone I probably will never see again.
Do you remember all of the faces of the newcomers whose hands you have shaken? Do you make a point to shake their hand not just once, but the next time, and the next time, and the next? Or do you just hope that a newcomer will shake hands with the guy they see on stage and feel welcome?
I don't mean to attack you personally, especially since I don't know you. I don't know if you do this or not. I'm going off of my experience that makes me dislike the handshakes. Its great to make people feel welcome. However, in the context of a big church, where you don't even know who is new and who isn't, making people shake hands seems like a shallow attempt to create a warm atmosphere.

When girls lead worship and they act like hanna montana!!!

I also hate it when worship leaders sing so loud that it hurts, and you can't sing along, because you can't even hear yourself!

I cannot stress this enough! Worship leaders singing loud, or acting like a super star REALLY kills it for me!

I do this to let the slide person know what direction I'm heading. Just in case I feel the spirit leading back to the bridge or chorus where it normally would not be. =)

Ok so as a full-time worship leader, I gotta flip this around.....this is my "I hate it when my congregation..." This is all in good fun folks...

I hate it when people show up 20 min late for worship EVERY week when we have been having the same service times for 10 years.....

I hate it when people complain that not EVERY song in the set was thematic and pointed them to the sermon. We CAN just worship without being overly thematic ya know....God doesn't really care that much I am sure.

I hate it when you guys sign up to serve on a worship team or A/V ministry team and then don't show up or call, text or email the worship leader letting me know you are sick or you gotta walk your granny's dog or whatever.

I hate it when people get upset when they try out for a worship team, after being told their entire life that they have a great singing voice, but in reality they can't sing their way out of a bag. I am NOT Simon Cowell, but it sure feels like it sometimes. Thats when the phrase "Ya know there might be a better ministry for you to serve in" really comes in handy.

I hate it when I share something that God has put on my heart (I don't do it every week and I try to be relevant and not ramble) but my congregants stand there looking annoyed. You might want to listen, cause God may be speaking to you and giving you something you need to hear. Ask yourself this question....WHY AM I HERE TODAY?? Is it to be entertained or to be fed? It should be to be fed and if so, open your mouth and your heart and let God fill you without any pre-determined expectations of what you EXPECT to get out of your Sunday morning experience.

I hate it when my Pastor is more concerned about subjective verses objective worship songs than he is about whether or not people are "encountering" God on Sunday morning.

I hate it when people say that worship is not about performance.....actually there HAS to be a certain level of performance in our services. We want to be excellent for God, to bring our BEST to him. To do that, we have to try and eliminate distractions and to point you to Christ. This is a heart issue of course and is something we worship leaders spend a great deal of time concentrating on and talking with our teams about.

I hate it when congregation members say that we never sing any hymns......and yet the setlist has 2 or more traditionally written hymns that they just never grew up singing or are done in a way that doesnt mess with the original melody but is arranged in a way that brings out some new energy in a dead hymn.

I hate it when people in our church constantly complain about EVERYTHING but are NEVER willing to step up and sit on a board, or volunteer to run video or train to be a sound tech or help me file music for 30 min once a week or the countless other service opportunities that are available at my church.

Ok my lil rant is over. In short, I love my congregation, my job, my life. I am living the dream and want you all to join in it with me. So I say this....GIVE YOUR WORSHIP LEADERS SOME ENCOURAGEMENT AND PRAY FOR THEM DAILY. Love them and you would like to be loved.....hmmmm I think I read that somewhere.

Peace
