There are some roads you just don’t name your church after.
But I’m also a recovering Jr. Higher.

  3. Jake 6 July 2008 at 3:40 pm #

That is awesome! I think you should bring back “Pimp my Bus” for DRIVE next year and definitely bring that one in!

  4. Chris 6 July 2008 at 4:00 pm #

    It’s not a large church – it’s just big-boned. :)

  5. Jonathan 6 July 2008 at 4:10 pm #

only in KY could it also get worse than the church name:

Why is it always from Kentucky? I love living here, but sometimes I just have to shake my head, in shame.

  7. Kris Sorensen 6 July 2008 at 4:35 pm #

    Carlos,
I can think of a few tag lines for this church that I can’t type here. ;-)

    Jonathan,
    haha

  8. brad 6 July 2008 at 4:36 pm #

    Dang…Chris just stole my joke.

  9. Scott Fillmer 6 July 2008 at 4:43 pm #

Saw this floating around this morning too, can’t believe this is what they came up with, crazy

  10. allen 6 July 2008 at 5:04 pm #

    true, true!

  11. ryan guard 6 July 2008 at 5:15 pm #

Wonder if they sing “Can’t nobody do me like Jesus” when they’re traveling to camps and such.

    Real song. Google it.

My church is on Fruit Street… not as funny.

  12. Jon D 6 July 2008 at 5:16 pm #

Un-freaking believable. That is too awesome!

  13. Nick 6 July 2008 at 5:19 pm #

Hey Los, I’m here at Hume San Diego for junior high summer camp and Sandals is here… anyone you want me to say hi to? :j

  14. Chris S. 6 July 2008 at 5:25 pm #

Hey! Whose is bigger, those Baptists or these Presbyterians? http://www.pcbw.org/

  15. Heather 6 July 2008 at 5:38 pm #

Hey, what’s wrong with that, that’s the churhc I grew up in. HA! That is just too funny.

  16. randy 6 July 2008 at 5:57 pm #

    why the heck???

seriously what was the meeting like when they decided on that name.

“ok every one here are the choices, we have… 1) God’s Place 2) Christ Baptist or 3) Big Bone Baptist…”

“All in favor of ‘Big Bone Baptist’”

  17. ksc 6 July 2008 at 5:58 pm #

    What about this one?

    Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church

I can make fun … i know the senior pastor! :)

  18. Clayman 6 July 2008 at 6:14 pm #

kinda like the RiverWood Church in Corpus Christi – their phone number is 242-WOOD…

  19. Andy McMahon 6 July 2008 at 6:36 pm #

Oh man…. Would it be inappropriate to say that this almost certainly has to be an African American Church?

    hehe.

  20. Dan [djByron] 6 July 2008 at 6:40 pm #

It makes perfect sense when you realize that the former name of the church was “First Church of the Naive”.

Yea, I probably would have posted this had I seen it too…

  21. loswhit 6 July 2008 at 6:44 pm #

    Oh no Andy didn’t.
    Wow.

  22. Robin 6 July 2008 at 6:56 pm #

Yeah Andy, That was my first thought. I wasn’t brave enough to type it though.

  23. alex mclean 6 July 2008 at 7:07 pm #

let’s just hope no one graffiti’s an “r” at the end…

  24. brent(inWorship) 6 July 2008 at 7:14 pm #

Alex, how many of us automatically read it with the “r” at the end :)

  25. Crystal Renaud 6 July 2008 at 7:29 pm #

unfortunately, for something like this one, no one notices just how wrong it is until its too late.

marketing 101: always read your name how a 12-year-old would see it. then you won’t make this mistake.

  26. Angela Hart 6 July 2008 at 7:36 pm #

I totally get it! I laugh at these things too…sadly, probably more than I did when I was actually IN jr. high. I just got home from the beach and we passed through a town called “Florala” that had a fireworks sign on a building that said, “Biggest Bang in Town.” I’m just sayin’…(back)

PS: Your tatooed arm had a little cameo in the wine article I wrote for Randy’s party!! Did you see it? ;)

    Angela

  27. Mike Dalton 6 July 2008 at 8:58 pm #

    That’s what she said.

  28. upsidedown 6 July 2008 at 9:20 pm #

Maybe they should read the “church marketing sucks” blog.

  29. upsidedown 6 July 2008 at 9:24 pm #

What a minute all you Jr. Highers, I didn’t mean it that way! There really is a website!
    http://www.churchmarketingsucks.com
    Geeezzz.

  30. Renee Garcia 6 July 2008 at 9:27 pm #

ok I admit it, I giggled. LOL

  31. BUSH 6 July 2008 at 10:44 pm #

hahahaha…los, glad you posted this man. i knew your readers would like it.

  32. amoslanka 6 July 2008 at 10:45 pm #

what would be super funny is if they had offered you a job or something..

  33. carie 6 July 2008 at 11:02 pm #

oh my gosh! That is too hilarious! I’m from KY. Covington, right across the river from Cincy. This area is about 30 or so mins. away outside of town. No one has ever believed me when I’ve told them about “Big Bone.” A lot of stuff in that area is named Big Bone-this, Big-Bone that, but the icing on the cake is the park. yep. It’s called Big Bone Lick State Park. And the nearby towns? Beaverlick and Rabbit Hash. We really know how to name things down there. ;) Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories of home. ;) lol.

  34. carie 6 July 2008 at 11:05 pm #

And, yes, Andy…I find that offensive.

  35. Corbett 7 July 2008 at 4:22 am #

Uhh… yeah… I could be wrong, but I think the church name came first and the road name followed. So there’s really no excuse…

  36. Bubba 7 July 2008 at 4:44 am #

It isn’t always Kentucky. Gaffney, SC has a nice little place called ‘Suck Creek Baptist Church’ right on Suck Creek Church Rd.

    Makes you wonder….

  37. brad 7 July 2008 at 6:02 am #

In Arkansas, we have a toad suck park as well as a town named Bald Knob.

    Yee. haw.

  38. Rob Lopez 7 July 2008 at 6:35 am #

Yea I think Corbett’s right. It looks like the road is named after the church. And as far as andy’s comment, What on earth makes it seem like it’s a african american church??

  39. rodge 7 July 2008 at 8:52 am #

what a minute, don’t you got to church called Buckhead?

  40. Andy McMahon 7 July 2008 at 9:20 am #

wow. Did I stir up controversy? Truly not my intention. I have a disorder from birth, I was born without a filter in my brain. It’s something I just can’t help. But, fortunately I was also born with the ability to apologize if I did offend people…

    so….

    Yeah, I’m sorry. :)

  41. Naz 7 July 2008 at 5:22 pm #

My imagination is drawn to the possibilities of the left off letters in the subtitle.
    ____ng?

  42. carie 7 July 2008 at 11:20 pm #

I didn’t try to stir up controversy. Just honestly answering your question about whether that was going too far. Racial stereotyping…it’s just bad. apologies accepted.

  43. AuntieB 8 July 2008 at 6:30 am #

Well, in WV, there’s a hollow named “Big Ugly”. A few miles down the road, there’s “Little Ugly”.

Wouldn’t that be a shame? “Hello. I’m the pastor at Big Ugly Baptist church.”

Oh my word………..(rolls eyes and shakes head)

  44. Jenny 8 July 2008 at 5:03 pm #

Another Cincinnati girl here. I definitely lost it after I drove by BeaverLick Baptist Church in Ky. My Christian friend and I who saw it have a running joke that there is alwasy something going down at BeaverLick…

  45. Michael C. McGough 9 July 2008 at 12:08 pm #

I am working through a large databases of churches, and KY does has a lot of towns with ‘Lick’ in the name. And Atlanta has the “Perfect Church”, if you are looking for it. No, really, it’s called the “Perfect Church”.
    http://www.theperfectchurch.org/

Of course, it’s not as bad as the Montgomery Biscuits minor league baseball team. They actually chose that name…in a CONTEST. What were the other options?!

  46. Tanya 11 July 2008 at 12:41 pm #

Interesting. I’m African-American, I didn’t necessarily assume it was a black church, but I did think that it was hilarious. However, I think perhaps my reason was different. I thought immediately of a phrase black folks like to use: big-bone-ded. That means a big (overweight) person. It’s one of those gentler terms, you know. “Humph, that heifer is big bone-ded.”

  47. Tanya 11 July 2008 at 12:47 pm #

Have you guys ever heard of Slapout, Oklahoma. I swear, it’s really a town.

  48. Michael C. McGough 11 July 2008 at 2:31 pm #

There’s a Slapout, Alabama, as well. It’s near Holtville in central AL.
