Stress Makes Me…

That my friends, is a canker sore.
They pop up in my mouth at the strangest of times.
Heather swears I only get them when I am stressed.
I would agree.
I don’t feel stressed right now.
I actually feel really good.
But sometimes our body has to tell us we are stressed before our minds do.
I could tell you why I am stressed.
But you’ll have to wait till tomorrow.
What physical symptoms do you get when you get stressed?

my eye twitches. just one. never the same. very odd.

  2. Ryan 22 July 2008 at 7:04 pm #

either my right eye twitches or I sweat, sometimes both…

  3. jaysten 22 July 2008 at 7:05 pm #

head cocks to the right. tongue attempts to stab through left cheek. deep breath coupled with intense should strong. this prompts someone to ask “what’s wrong” followed by the exhuberant yet undeniably annoyed “nothing”

  4. Matt Singley 22 July 2008 at 7:06 pm #

Poop. No, seriously, it does. I have Crohn’s disease. It rarely flairs up (I control it with diet and excercise, not medication) but when it does, it’s around times of stress. Awesome.

my blood pressure shoots up and I get EXTREMELY tired when Im stressed.
Hence the reason Ive been napping every day for the last few weeks : (

    Sorry about your sore

  6. manasseh 22 July 2008 at 7:09 pm #

    I get these nasty hives!
They itch and hurt and the more I scratch them the bigger they get!
Really sucks, but thankfully it doesn’t happen every single time I am stressed, or I would have to walk around screaming out “unclean!” It’s only when I REALLY stressed.

  7. Chad Maag 22 July 2008 at 7:13 pm #

When I get stressed I want to smoke. I used to smoke because of stress, so when stress flares so does the desire. Blood pressure usually spikes, and I get migranes.

  8. Rhys 22 July 2008 at 7:19 pm #

Dude, Los….I get them all the time from stress. My gf flat out hates knowing I’m getting stressed because then I can barely even eat. lol I’ve been diagnosed that they occur during stress even…all I know NOT FUN!

  9. Nicole 22 July 2008 at 7:19 pm #

I get fat…because I eat A LOT. partly because I get insomnia and stay up to all hours, and partly because its something that I can control.

which is why I am FAT now. lol

    yay RagamuffinTop challenge!!

    I also grind my teeth.

  10. Amy (Dandelion Seeds) 22 July 2008 at 7:19 pm #

MIGRAINES!!!! Been fighting one for a few days now…

  11. Chelsea 22 July 2008 at 7:24 pm #

I get stomach cramps. I can’t eat or I eat too much and want to get sick. I cry.
Sadly, all these symptoms occur anytime we’re about to spend a weekend with the in-laws. You’d think I’d get over it after 15 years…

migraines, ugly ones, like a knife in my head! ugh!

  13. hr 22 July 2008 at 7:32 pm #

i’ve read your blog for a few weeks now, and THIS is the first entry that made me want to commment. haha. (not that the other stuff was bad, i was just satisfied with only reading it)

i get cold and canker sores too! they’re horrible. i hate associating eating with pain!

    hope it gets better soon.

  14. shan 22 July 2008 at 7:47 pm #

i get canker sores too (either when i’m stressed or right before i have a sore throat), like matt singley, i too have poop issues sometimes when stressed/excited, and the worst of all, when i’m stressed i pick at my skin…which makes things more stressful cuz then i get little “break outs” because of it and that stresses me out (it’s a vicious cycle)…i think that’s pretty much it.
    …yeah, i’m lots of fun when i’m stressed. :)

  15. Kristi 22 July 2008 at 7:52 pm #

I get canker sores with pms. Now that’s not likely your reason, but hormonal fluxes do play a part in their appearance for both genders. At least, I think that’s true.

And like others, I’m afraid migraines and a painful stomach take turns during times of stress.

  16. hollybird 22 July 2008 at 7:55 pm #

just FYI.. you can also get those from eating lots of tomatoes. they tend to pop up in the summertime because of that. so.. maybe it’s not all stress??? or is that wishful thinking.

btw, I get goosebumps (or what we refer to here as monkey shivers) almost constantly when i am really stressed. It’s quite freaky.

  17. Michelle 22 July 2008 at 8:03 pm #

clench my teeth, which causes my jaw to hurt, which causes headaches

  18. Brook 22 July 2008 at 8:04 pm #

When I get stressed I wake up with a headache the next morning…usually lasts until noon or so. When I get overly-stressed I usually fall into a mild state of depression… not hungry, not driven, want to do something but don’t want to do anything.

My life these days is like walking a tightrope between normality and stressed…

No sleep, mean, irritable, my wife doesn’t like me when I’m that way. It’s not pleasant. Snappy to kids. Mostly, physically, though … can’t sleep.

  20. Cristin 22 July 2008 at 8:19 pm #

HIVES all over my body! They SUCK!!!

You should try L-Lysine. It’s a vitamin. It TOTALLY works for the canker sores…I’m serious. It will shorten the cank’s life and if you take it regularly…(or when you feel it coming) you won’t get them. I’m totally serious.

  21. Michael 22 July 2008 at 8:21 pm #

I get knots in my back the size of golf balls. Yay for a wife that isn’t burnt out on a shoulder rub every now and then!

This is my first time at your site. Your music sounds great.

    Take care,
    Michael

  22. kim 22 July 2008 at 8:24 pm #

    weird stomach stuff
because of? resulting in? craving food I don’t usually crave
    low threshold for being annoyed
    usually: ‘hunker down’… quiet… non-communicative
this week: opposite. a bit mouthy.

  23. Marcus Hackler 22 July 2008 at 8:24 pm #

I totally get canker sores too – I also have restless legs when I’m stressed and end up drinking lots of coffee as a result of that stress.

  24. Darcie 22 July 2008 at 8:34 pm #

Good old tension headaches. That heaven for Excedrin.

  25. natalie 22 July 2008 at 8:47 pm #

    stomach ulcers

btw, I know this is late, but I just finished listening to My Summer Vacation.

    uh…yeah, bout that…

You know how you hear somethings with your ears and somethings with her heart… That message, my soul heard.

  26. Tammy 22 July 2008 at 9:25 pm #

I was going to tell you the Lysine thing it totally works and I take it all the time to keep them at bay.
I also get them if I have been grubbing too much Vitamin C foods (OJ, Orange juice you name it)
Pick some up at Target, GNC and take it.

I get them when I am stressed too.

  27. Tyler 22 July 2008 at 9:36 pm #

my shoulders stay really tight all day long, and i get canker sores too actually and I know it is always from stress. We have something in common Los. Things have been pretty intense at church the past 2 weeks and I just today felt a canker sore coming in. And like you, I had no idea I was stressed. But the canker sore tells me different.

  28. alicia 22 July 2008 at 9:39 pm #

neck pain and shingles on the side of my face when I am super stressed… Not fun.

  29. Harry 23 July 2008 at 12:55 am #

My tonsils swell up, and I’m crapping liquid for a while…

  30. carie 23 July 2008 at 1:23 am #

Ugh. I grind my teeth and then have to wear my mouth guard, which I hate. Of course, I don’t realize I’ve been doing it until I wake up with a really sore neck and jaw. Then the mouth guard with the silly little string so you don’t choke goes in for a few days. NOT an attractive look and my cats continuously swat at the string hanging out of my mouth while I’m trying to sleep. ;) I feel like a real nerd having typed that.

  31. Ron 23 July 2008 at 1:58 am #

I get a nerve spasm in my back, just by my left shoulder blade. not sore just irritating.

  32. b/ 23 July 2008 at 3:01 am #

I get the same freakin little sores in my mouth.

Eat LOTS of bananas, gargle lots of water, and go to pharmacy and get L-lysene (taken regularly, this stuff will actually prevent them). They’ll be gone as quick as they came.

  33. Heidi Reed 23 July 2008 at 3:59 am #

I get them too. It’s herpes simplex 1. I also have herpes simplex 2. I get them both when I’m extremely stressed out, tired, and sick all at once. If it’s just stress, then I’ll get a canker sore. Just so you know, these little incurable reoccurances will always attack your nervous system. As long as you stay healthy, sleep enough, and reduce stress you’ll be fine. As soon as the balance is knocked of tilt you will suffer from those painful blisters. Blah! I know how you feel. Four days till it’s gone. Don’t kiss your kids on their mouths or let them drink/eat after you for a week. Seriously.

  34. Scott Fillmer 23 July 2008 at 4:08 am #

yep, use to get them when I was stressed, was told also from a lake of vitimans.

    Just don’t be stressed :)

  35. MichelleVeach 23 July 2008 at 4:09 am #

remember my prayer request – those bathroom visits on a Sunday morning are liquid poop…and then, by 2pm when I’ve had lunch w/the gang I love, I’m fine!

  36. gillie 23 July 2008 at 4:16 am #

My psoriasis breaks out (it’s Guttate Psoriasis). If I’m a little stressed, I get a few spots here and there. If I’m REALLY STRESSED, like major life crisis stressed, I get covered in them and it looks ringworm all over my body.

    It’s a definitive sign that I need a break.

  37. The Domestic Goddess 23 July 2008 at 4:33 am #

Muscle spasms, reflux, and those dreadful canker sores. I have one right now in the same spot!
I also get hives for no reason. I mean, I’ve got tons of allergies, but they tend to crop up when I’m more stressed.

  38. ally simpson 23 July 2008 at 4:41 am #

headaches, dizziness, panic attacks but mostly my eczema kicks off badly on my face

  39. Jeff T. 23 July 2008 at 4:41 am #

    FAT.

  40. matt 23 July 2008 at 4:50 am #

GAS! and lots of it. Sucks when I’m stressed and wearing a Mic.

  41. Cody 23 July 2008 at 5:47 am #

i get cold sores/fever blisters. ive heard you either get cold sores or canker sores. you cant get both. lysine definitely works.

take as soon as you feel one coming on

  42. Greg Atkinson 23 July 2008 at 6:25 am #

I get a cold. I feel like my immune system just breaks down and I start feeling miserable.

  43. Trevor DeVage 23 July 2008 at 6:29 am #

I just had two of those pop up this week. I have bit my bottom lip so many times eating because I have two huge craters in my lip…AAHHHHHHH

  44. Malachi 23 July 2008 at 7:56 am #

I get cranky, rude, and insensitive. I’m no fun at all.

  45. Nick 23 July 2008 at 8:20 am #

thanks Los, now my computer screen has herpes because of your nasty pic

  46. Paloma 23 July 2008 at 8:41 am #

It depends on how stressed I’ve been and for how long, but, from short to long term:

I get quiet(cause it’s so noisy on the inside), my stomach goes wacky, my shoulders tense up, headaches, sensitive/emotional, tired, then if it continues I end up with a cold that knocks me off my feet. I always got sick at the end of every semester past 8th grade. Yay for stress.
    We all need a vacation!

  47. Crispy 23 July 2008 at 8:57 am #

I have Crohn’s. So when I’m stresses my stomach hurts, badly.

  48. matt g 23 July 2008 at 9:16 am #

High Blood Pressure… and recently Shingles… at 26. I thought only old people get Shingles.

  49. Andrew 23 July 2008 at 9:42 am #

    canker sores and extreme exhaustion

  50. transitionpete 23 July 2008 at 10:44 am #

i get cankers when i don’t get enough sleep. my stomach gets *sour* when i get stressed and have to lay off the java for awhile.

  51. jenn 23 July 2008 at 10:59 am #

oh my…my husband has the same problem, but he doesn’t get just one, but mouthfuls at a time! not good for the smooching scene at our house. the real question is, what do you do to get rid of them?!? enjoy reading your blog. thanks for posting the 7:22 news. we too were influenced from chicago by this amazing ministry.

  52. gabriel mcgee 23 July 2008 at 12:12 pm #

I can’t sleep, and either my left or right shoulder gets slightly more elevated than the other one.

  53. eryn 23 July 2008 at 12:13 pm #

i clinch jaw or as lame as this sounds bite the side of my mouth.
i used to bite my nails. (: horray for breaking habits.

  54. carie 23 July 2008 at 12:21 pm #

    lol Nick. ;)
Cold sores and Canker Sores are two different things!

  55. ash 23 July 2008 at 1:17 pm #

nights full of bad clinching/grinding of teeth that causes equally bad headaches. and I get those same sores too. yuck!

  56. Rachael P 23 July 2008 at 2:50 pm #

I get acid reflux…really really really bad acid reflux. its not nice.. :(

  57. Liana 23 July 2008 at 2:57 pm #

Ouch! I get them all the time. My husband calls them meanness bumps and says that I get them from being mean to him.

  58. Josh Young 23 July 2008 at 6:12 pm #

Canker sores, fever blisters, and eye twitches. Never fails. It sucks. I have two of the three right now actually. Apparently I’m stressed. :)

  59. Naz 23 July 2008 at 6:19 pm #

Well, I have OCD, so sometimes I end up doing stupid things that don’t make any sense for a long time, like play backgammon, which I’m going to do right now…

  60. soozieque 23 July 2008 at 7:43 pm #

I used to get those really bad. My dr told me to take a supplement called L-Lysene (you can get a bottle cheap at GNC) with my vitamins, and it totally cleared mine up, which were also stress related. According to the bottle, it “promotes membrane health” I pop one every day with my daily vitamin. Good stuff!

  61. soozieque 23 July 2008 at 7:46 pm #

I just realized approximately 4.93 million people already mentione L-Lysene. That’s what happens when I comment before reading all the comments!

  62. Jen 23 July 2008 at 10:18 pm #

oh, lame Carlos…you need some sleep. stress for me means a complicated migraine where half my face and the left side of my body goes numb…like a stroke. Its freaky, but sleep (like days of it) is the cure.

  63. Karen 24 July 2008 at 4:35 am #

I’m just releived on behalf of the veiwing blog world that your stress does not cause hemorroids.

  64. FaithfulB 26 July 2008 at 8:17 pm #

Canker sores also indicate that your stomach may be upset.

  65. Rhi 30 July 2008 at 1:34 pm #

muscle twitches and i lose my voice…

  66. David Tooley 23 July 2009 at 12:27 pm #

Wow! Prior to this, I had no idea that canker sores (mouth ulcers) are related to hemorrhoids. ;P

On a different note: regarding your experiment with the twitpic video feed yesterday – the snare or kick drum was overdriving the audio send.

  67. Espy 23 July 2009 at 12:46 pm #

    eye twitch & migraines

  68. Tony Chavez 23 July 2009 at 1:48 pm #

I'm with the hemorrhoid guy… they just start poppin' up out of nowhere!! :-)

Actually, I have the same problem… canker sores… and they are the number one, worst thing ever!! My wife makes fun of me because I make such a big deal out of them…

  69. LeAnn 23 July 2009 at 6:59 am #

We are all too familiar with those painful sores…even my kids get them. In our case, it’s in our (my) genes. Hannah (almost 4) calls it a kangaroo sore. =)

  70. Aliciamc 23 July 2009 at 10:57 pm #

I cry or get nauseous… started the new job on Monday and I've spent everyday either feeling like I was going to throw up, or trying not to burst into tears. It's going to be a very long summer!
