If You Could Spend 24 Hours With A Leader
I just got back from a 24 hour planning retreat with Julie Arnold, Tyler Reagin, and Andy Stanley.
My mind is toast but my soul is full.
Our conversation was worth my entire move out here alone.
2009 is going to be an AMAZING year in our church.
If you could spend 24 hours with a leader,
who would it be?
Los

Erwin McManus
Craig Groeschel
Nelson Mandella.
There are a lot I would like to, and a lot I have. Right now I would probably choose a theologian or writer like NT Wright, Richard Foster or Brennan Manning. Joked with my wife about claiming to be single to go on the North Point Singles retreat to see Brennan Manning.
denver moore.
http://www.samekindofdifferentasme.com
Bill Hybels
Anne Jackson
Ron Paul
without sounding like a total suck up I would have to say carlos whittaker, but my close second would be andy stanley. i figure i might have a shot to hang with los… and since he hangs with andy it is almost the same.
it would be a liter of guinness.
Bill Gates.
Louie Giglio or Matt Chandler
Fran Chan
http://www.reson8.org <<That guy!
Definitely either Mark Driscoll, or Rob Bell.
Oh, and also Han Solo.
Well it would definately would be Andy Stanley fo sho. He has taught me so so so so much in the short year i have even known of him.
it’s so hard to narrow it down…i’d have to say either of the following for very different reasons…
rob bell – talk theology
barak obama – talk politics
bono – to talk philanthropy
jody landers – to talk African adoption
your wife – to talk mommyhood and wifey stuff
Shane Claiborne
John Eldridge
John Piper
Jason Harper – Sacramento
in the christian world… groeschel fo’sho.
secular… steve jobs
Not thats its possible at this point but it would have been Mother Teresa.
Chandler or Groeschel or Jobs
Judah Smith
Nancy Beach
Richard Branson or Ted Turner. I love their maverick spirits and Im guessing we would have some fun while hangin.
Andy Stanley
No lie: Andy Stanley or North Point’s Communications guru..
Pastor Steven Furtick or Pastor Mark Driscoll
Depends on what sort of leader…
Church: Matt Chandler
Business: Steve Jobs
Politics: Ron Paul.
I would give up my 24 hours so my older sister could spend it with James Dobson to pray with her and counsel her about the recent sudden death of my 8yo niece.
Dr. Ravi Zacherias
Wow, Los! ONE leader? Hmmm…
How about you? You seem to know your stuff, and a lot of other leaders have invested themselves in you. So, yeah…
Carlos Whittaker
Great Names!!! Now WHY?
Steven Furtick. Supposed to meet with a staff member of his in September. Would LOVE to get even 15 minutes of insight. We’ll see….
GK Chesterton – philosophy
Martin Luther King Jr. – life meaning
Eugene Peterson – pastoral theology
Dietrich Bonhoeffer – activism
Donald Miller
Nelson Mandela
2nd – Queen of England
(I like old leaders…they’ve seen so much)
I would spend 24 hours with Oprah Winfrey. She is a creative thinker, full of big ideas, knows how to make thoughts a reality, and could probably make it easy for me to video-conference or call a few other folk that I would like to connect with like Barack Obama and Nelson Mandlea.
I would love to pitch some of my churchy ideas to Oprah to see how she thinks I could make them relevant to society at large. I would also like to share with her my passion for ending slavery and tell her about the initiative my buddy Eugene Cho is leading @ http://www.FightGlobalPoverty.com
hrm . only one? dead or alive? if dead I’d say tozer. if alive I’d say joyce meyers. I have a ton of questions for her about ministry….
Obama. he’s making history. whether you want him for president or not…he’s still the first black to do this. i’d love to spend 24 hrs getting into his head, heart and soul.
Fred Rogers….
but if I had to choose a living person who might actually give me day in my future I would choose Rick McKinley.
Mark Batterson or Perry Noble
George Bush. Focused and Intense.
G.B. Has managed to surround himself with people who are twice as smart and gifted as he his.
Bono
Andy Stanley or Louie Giglio.
Los – I would love to hear more about the process you guys go through (unless it’s a secret
). Are there any specific tools you guys use? what is the agenda like?
LOVE mauro’s answer! Though it definitely raises the ‘only one?’ question. We’re talking 24 hours, not 24 minutes dude.
Mine:
Marilyn Manson in a heartbeat.
He is far more intelligent and culturally astute than he’s given credit for and if I have only one shot at 24 hours with a leader I want to go way outside the box and beyond church leaders who have perspectives that, while excellent and life-changing, I can pretty easily agree with and fairly easily access thru books, vids, etc.
I’m guessing I’d get a really fresh, very outside perspective about the church (understatement) from someone who would challenge the snot out of my perceptions and assumptions and could probably care less about rocking my boat.
Jim Cymbala, Pastor of The Brooklyn Tabernacle.
Andy Stanley – possibly one of the best leaders I know to date from hearing from his staff
or
John Maxwell – one 20 minute talk at Catalyst has changed the way i have looked at the year 2008 and placing VALUE in others and my teams
Erwin McManus or if he’s busy, Brian McLaren
martin luther king jr
John MacArthur- he doesn’t compromise.
(Not necessarily in this order)
Los (seriously)
Andy Stanley
Troy Jones
Jason Harper
Jonathan Bow
http://www.jonathanbow.com
Mark Driscoll definately!
Andy Stanley
I enjoy every chance I get to cross paths with Rob Bell.
But Shel Silverstein would be a blast to hang out with.
Anne Jackson – church burnout, surviving it and still being the leader you are called to be.
T-bone Burnett
Andy Stanley or John Maxwell
I had an answer before the question was finished. I would love to spend 24hrs with Andy Stanley. I have a set of his messages including some from Catalyst. By far, Andy speeks directly to me. I can hear his messages over and over again, and I find something new to work out. That would be amazing!
My Grandfather. Died before I was born, but one incredible man. As for the living – Joel Osteen. No, really. I want to ask him so many DEEEEEEP questions!
Andy Stanley because God has gifted him with so much insight and He speaks through Andy.
Jonathan Merritt because he’s an up and comer in Baptist life. He’s 26 years old, but so wise and gifted for his age.
Bono
Jon Foreman
Los
Steven Spielberg
ive been blessed to already have spent some time with andy stanley & kevin ragsdale who are both fantastic leaders that i admire.
honestly… id say right now id love to come hang out with the whittaker family for 24 hours. reading ya’lls blogs for the past couple months i admire the transparent authenticity & know that you guys are a rare breed. plus you’re both stinkin hilarious.
oo… or rob bell. so i could take him shopping for some contact lenses. i love him but would be able to take him much more seriously without the glasses.
Craig Groeschel
Furtick
Beth Moore
Louie Gigilo
Tony Campalo
Billy Graham
Got to take a step back in time to have a fireside chat with FDR.
Craig Groeschel
Tough question… so many… but these days I would say Rick Warren to talk about The PEACE Plan…
Jim Collins — I love facts, data and to hear about the “why’s” behind how some leaders tick
John Ortberg and Dallas Willard — both of them together b/c they pose great questions and thoughts around bringing God into our daily living
Bill Hybels — b/c of his passion for the church
Steve Sample — after reading the Contrarian’s Guide to Leadership
Beth Moore – I’d like to talk family and ministry with her. What am I saying? I’d like to talk about everything with her!
Jeff Henderson.
Nelson Mandela
Rob Bell
dave matthews
John Maxwell
Marcus Buckingham
Jeff Henderson & the Buckhead staff
Nancy Beach – I spent 90 minutes with her today and it was life-changing, can’t imagine 24 hours
Matt Chandler. The man is not only prophetic, he’s real, passionate, and hillarious. So much of what he says and where God is leading him is against the grain of society, but it is all about The Gospel. I have a ton of questions, but mostly I would hope to begin a relationship with he and Lauren that would last a lifetime.
jeff henderson
mark richt
… maybe a few hours with both at the same time! Why??? I admire and respect both of them so much and love their leadership styles!
then…
anne lamott… why??? she cracks me up and i love her writing style- her brain is a bit off-kilter like mine is…
then…
rudy guiliani (spelling?)- not really about politics, but how he helped with/led the revitalization/renaissance of harlem and other parts of nyc while in office as mayor of nyc

Tim Keller. I’m sure I’d have lots of questions, but I’d also be happy to just sit down with the Bible and talk through the gospel. Keller lays it out so well, but it’s a daily struggle to live as if I believe the gospel with all of my heart and soul; thankfully Keller has helped me know God better and understand his grace more thoroughly. I’m sure a 24 hour Bible study with him would be fabulous.
N.T. Wright PLEASE! i’d like to pick the dudes massive brain on the new testament, christian living and the mission of the church. if you haven’t picked up his latest book ‘Surprised by Hope: rethinking heaven, the resurrection and the mission of the church ‘ let me just say that you actually are missing out on your own life. get it, read it!!!
- Louie Giglio (love the way he communicates The Message)
- Matt Redman (as for the worship leading part)
- You
The consensus here is YOU! Seriously!! Just an hour even.. or 5 minutes? Us church creatives are Sooo grateful for your blog.
option #2 would be Charles Spurgeon.
Chuck Colson.
Geddy Lee/Steve Harris/Cliff Burton…
Tim Keller (my new best friend)
Shane Claiborne
Anne Lamotte
business – steve jobs
church – rob bell
political – george bush
John Ortberg…most significant influencer-from-afar in my understanding of life as a disciple of Christ
Voddie Baucham…the man is intense and doesn’t waver on his beliefs.
louie giglio or bob coy
Nancy Beach or now, Catherine Rohr.
I was going to say Jackson Crum, our senior pastor at Park Community Church (PCC) in Chicago, because he is so real and honest and genuine.
Then, I thought maybe Joseph Tenney, our worship pastor at PCC, because he knows so much Bible theology, I could pick his brain for days.
But on further thought, I am going to say….Heather Whitaker. I would spend the time watching her interact with her kiddos and you and her friends. I would watch her cook and clean. I’d ask questions and I’d learn how to be a better wife and mom and friend. Through that, I will become a better Christ follower.
I have a retreat coming up soon in 2009. I hope its as amazing as yours.
Where was your retreat located at and how many people went?
Las Vegas Coupons are really useful. Try traveling to Las Vegas when you have time.
Retreats are very fun.
Bill Gates. He's mellowed a lot since he's got older. He also puts his money where his mouth is.
