So This College Football Thing

Posted on 30. Aug, 2008 by loswhit in Uncategorized

I don’t understand what , “You Tide er Wargle?” means.
I don’t understand how the uneducated can root for a football team that is part of higher education?
Jokes on them.
But alas, I wonder…
Who’s your team?

    #1 Oklahoma (I’m from there)
    #2 Texas (I live there)
root for both unless they play each other, then I’ve gotta go for my sooner boys.

Yes yes, folks, let the heckling begin. Yes, we lose bowl games. But my coach can still beat up your coach.

  3. portorikan 30 August 2008 at 5:37 pm #

Bama all the way….and we’re not ALL uneducated?! For those from other areas of the country, most southerners are not uneducated. My mother’s family of 8 people – all from rural Alabama – boasts 15 degrees…..yes, that’s right! Now me, I didn’t graduate from college but did live on campus as a child. We learned to say Mama, Daddy, Roll Tide…..Welcome to the south, where football is serious stuff.

  7. Clay 30 August 2008 at 5:44 pm #

    The University of Georgia Bulldogs
    GO DAWGS!!!

Mark one more University of Oklahoma fan down. @larry, how can you root for both? That is called a “devils three-way”, you and two rivals?!

I went to two Division III schools – one for undergraduate and one for law school – so I have to pick college football allegiances based on other things. So, I root for the Florida Gators because I grew up there. I root for the Texas Longhorns because I live in Texas now, and I don’t like A&M, and I root for Ohio State because my dad went there, and I grew up singing a made up song about being a Buckeye in the backseat of our very tiny car. Here’s how it goes:
    I’m a Buckeye, I’m a Buckeye,
Yes I am, Yes I am.
    You can be a Gator
    And I’ll see you later
Yes I will, Yes I will

    I’m a Buckeye, I’m a Buckeye
Yes I am, Yes I am.
    You can be a Wildcat,
Cause they’re ugly and funny and fat
Yes they are, yes they are.

    You get the gist.
And now you probably understand why my real football loyalty lies with America’s team – the great Dallas Cowboys.

I gotta represent the “Mighty Gamecocks” from South Cak on Ragamuffin Soul. After last year the bandwagon became a little less crowded. So if you haven’t decided who to pull for come on aboard.

  18. megan 30 August 2008 at 6:11 pm #

yet another fan for the best – georgia bulldogs! my uncle played there when i was growing up. college football is great, and i agree with the 6th post above…we’re definitely not all uneducated?! most of us anything but.

  24. Karen 30 August 2008 at 6:20 pm #

I don’t know if you meant it that way, but that comes across as a little condescending. It is a cultural thing, a bonding thing, a tradition thing. I don’t even get into it, really, but I understand it. It runs deep in these parts.

  25. haemin 30 August 2008 at 6:21 pm #

eh. i went to Barnard (all girls’ college). but i couldn’t even tell you where the Columbia football field is. college football craziness is definitely a southern thing! :P

  26. Brad 30 August 2008 at 6:30 pm #

I noticed there aren’t any Michigan fans yet or maybe everyone is ashamed after today, but I’m still proud to root for the Victors.

  27. Dad Rowles 30 August 2008 at 6:31 pm #

    Ohio State, Go Bucks!!

  28. Nicole L 30 August 2008 at 6:31 pm #

oh man. My sister started at Auburn university two years ago.

Because of that…I DO know what “You Tide er Wargle?” means. And, also because of that, I must proclaim:

    WAR DAMN EAGLE!

yup. and I have my bachelor’s degree. it’s just a crazy pride thing.

If we were talking basketball I’d have to represent the Belmont Bruins.

we don’t have a football team.

  29. rachel 30 August 2008 at 6:32 pm #

Proud Fightin’ Texas Aggie – Whoop!!!!

And I am totally with you on the uneducated rooting for a team/school they didn’t attend! I have had my school torn up by so many Texas Longhorns “FANS” (t-sips) who didn’t go there. Really annoying!!!

  30. Jason C 30 August 2008 at 6:40 pm #

My blood runs ORANGE, go Tennessee Vols!

  41. Scott Fillmer 30 August 2008 at 7:36 pm #

Welcome to the south and college football, surprised they didn’t ask you to choose “go dawgs” “roll tide” or “war eagle” before you landed… but alas, folks over in GA still can’t spell dogs and our war eagle is a tiger :)

  42. kt 30 August 2008 at 7:36 pm #

LET’S GO BUCKEYES!!! My dog and I proudly wore our Ohio State jerseys today in SEC-country and flew the flag off our balcony.

“We don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we’re from O-HI-O!!!”

And yes, I get as many goosebumps from certain worship songs as when I see Script Ohio on the field.

last time i checked you don’t have to have a college degree to appreciate football.

so whether you’re a doctor or a dummy…football is universal.

and unc is my school, so not much of a football team so i root for a handful…

  46. bub 30 August 2008 at 7:56 pm #

The lone Notre Dame fan. I grew up in the catholic church, so I really had no choice than to root for the Golden Domers. I mean, does it get any better than Touchdown Jesus?

But I live in Tennessee and cheer for them as well. It really weirds me out when I hear go Georgia Bulldogs, because no one here sings anything other than Rocky Top.

  51. chilly 30 August 2008 at 8:53 pm #

I looked over the list and found no one that stated they were fans of the University of Notre Dame.

Which means…everyone here probably despises ND.

“Oh well…one for the good guys! GO IRISH!!!!
    Rally sons of Notre Dame,
Sing her glory, and sound her fame
    Raise her Gold and Blue,
    And cheer with voices true,
    Rah! Rah! For Notre Dame.

We will fight in every game
Strong of heart and true to her name.
    We will ne’er forget her
    And we’ll cheer her ever,
    Loyal to Notre Dame.

Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send the volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky,
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
    Onward to Victory.”
