Cocks, Atheists, and Ragamuffin Soul

Posted on 02. Sep, 2008 by loswhit in Uncategorized

This has been all over my tweets today but if you don’t twitter, meet my new friend MagicSwordKing.

He does not believe in God yet believes in this community.  He wrote an interesting post linking here and said…

“The all-time record-holder for page referrals is the WordPress tag for “Cocksucking” which I am not proud of, but I thought that was a pretty funny post so I’ll take it and leave it.  In something that amuses me to no end, the rapidly-rising second place for most referrals goes to Ragamuffin Soul, home to a “Musician, Blogger, and Pastor” from Atlanta, Georgia.  Seeing as we’re in the grips of the first of many Epic Legends, the Atlanta Saga, and that I’m a staunch (though tolerant) atheist, it amuses me that this, admittedly rather interesting pastor is second to “Cocksucking” on the all-time greatest referrers list.  A few more hits and he’ll surpass that.  Personally, I’m pulling for him on this one.  I’ve read his blog and he seems to do what few Christians do these days, that is to say a lot of good.”

So welcome to Ragamuffin Soul Magic Sword King.  We here at Ragamuffin Soul do aim to do what a lot of Christians are not doing these days…doing a lot of good.

Ragamuffins, meet Andrew…Andrew meet the Ragamuffins.

As the previous record-holder for referrals might indicate, when it comes to writing I’m not the cleanest of cats. Sometimes I work blue, but as I said on my own humble internet home, I don’t believe in bad words, bad ideas and intentions, yes, but words are harmless.

I come from Washington, DC, land of cynicism. Politics pervades everything, so people tend to drift to extremes. When I was in the sixth grade, the Clinton impeachment trial forced my classroom to be literally divided in half, because the people for conviction and against were arguing so much that teachers worried it would turn violent. That’s the kind of world I’ve grown up in.

Lately I’ve been telling a story from 2003 when I visited Atlanta for a high-school choral competition, a sort of pivotal moment in my life for a few reasons. As quoted I’m an atheist. I’d like to call myself an enlightened atheist, but I’m far from enlightened. Maybe more tolerant than certain others but I’ll not pretend to be what I’m not.

I’ve read the Bible, I’ve read many religious texts, and the one thing I’ve found that they all have in common is that you can take wisdom from every one. There are certain things that I’m not wired to do, like taking leaps of faith, but I know wisdom when I see it. People who live by the wisdom and not the dogma can be tremendous forces for good in this world, far more than I can be. I’m at my best when I’m writing or telling my silly stories or analyzing video games, but Los and many people like him are out there doing good for their communities, and making a difference.

I don’t care how they do it or why they do it, only that they do it. You keep doing your part, I’ll keep doing mine. And thanks for all the links! I don’t think your record will be broken any time soon.

This blog entry title would serve as an excellent “Create a Jeopardy Question for this answer” contest.

Hmmm… Cocks, Atheists, and Ragamuffin Soul

There is a good joke in here somewhere.

Carlos, I am amazed daily at the reach that you can have in your situation… it is a unique situation God has placed you in to be able to speak to people like in your previous email and this person when some (maybe most) modern typical churches can not, because they are closed to “ink” or “cocksuckers” or whatever the flavor of the day is, that allows you to reach these people. It is great to read.

Hi Andrew — and I’m glad you came to visit. This is a fun place; full of surprises.

I have this site on my blog list, but couldn’t link from there due to the word in the title and post — so I made the l-o-n-g-e-r way to visit…

He is right though, very very few Christians are doing what we are supposed to do.

  23. Jesse Phillips 3 September 2008 at 4:34 am #

This is really interesting! I mean, it’s proof that Christians have a horrible reputation, right?

What can we do to change that?

  24. Jesse H. 3 September 2008 at 7:03 am #

Andrew, thanks for coming and hangin’ out with all of us messed up followers of Christ. Let us know if there’s anything we can do to serve you in some way. Glad you’re here hangin’ out with us, it’s a great place to be.

Funny! I’m also at my best when I’m telling silly stories, too. And I’m a card-carrying Jesus freak.

  26. magicswordking 3 September 2008 at 1:31 pm #

Once more, many thanks for all the kind words, this is truly unprecedented for me.

I’m now in the somewhat awkward position though of finalizing a website move the day after traffic went through the roof at the previous location!

Believe me, I’m self-conscious about this coming off as shameless self-promotion, but my website, The Chaos Fold has moved off Wordpress’ internal servers and to its very own home at http://thechaosfold.com

Because of the tremendous surge in readers, I’m going to be updating both locations for the time being, but the wordpress-hosted one will likely be filled with links to the new one, so I can start to spread my digital wings that much more.

Much love once more, and I hope everyone who’s checked out my nonsense will continue to do so! Its only going to get better, or so I hope!
