The Hardest Thing Ever
Don’t worry. You’ll get a whoopin’ post about the marathon soon.
I’m on my last night of vacation and will get back to my blogging addiction soon.
In the meanwhile, you would think that the marathon was the hardest thing I have ever attempted.
But no.
The marathon was the second hardest thing I have ever done.
It kicked my arse, be sure of it.
But it was nothing like when that mountain chewed me up then spit me back out half the man I was when I began.
What is the hardest physical activity you have ever done?
Los

I don’t have anything that qualifies as “hard”. So, the wife says the 15k ruck march, in full battle rattle (helmet, flack jacket, load bearing vest, M-16, ruck sack w/ 30 pounds of equipment, a 2 qt. canteen and 2, 1 qt. canteens). Dang, I’m tired typin that
. I hear that’s about 9 or 10 miles up and down hills.
She says next to that she has given birth to two children the size of bowling balls. If I remember correctly, that wasn’t much fun either.
I need to go to the gym….I’m feelin a lil wimpy after that.
glad you survived! links busted…
congrats to both of you!
i climbed mt. fuji. miserable miserable miserable.
It = Works … was this = doesn’t work Just FYI till Los fixes it which knowing him will be like five seconds after I post this!
hardest thing I ever did (or are doing)
try to forgive actions that are unforgivable…
have sat at 11,000ft for extended periods of time to, but I know with that, eventually, I get to come down and its over
I hiked in and out of the grand canyon (aka the mouth of hell) in one day.
About 11 years ago I was on a work-paid vacation in Cancun. We went on a horseback-riding expedition on a beach about 30 minutes south of town. I was thrown from my horse when we went over some rocks. My first action was to rescue my father’s camera from the water. Second, I got back on the horse, figuring if I could do that then I was okay. I rode out to the turnaround point, got off and walked the horse back the 2 miles sor so to the ranch. They then took my to the “American” hospital where they determined I had fractured my L2 vertebrae.
So, I broke my back, rode a horse with a broken back and walked 2 miles with a broken back.
Half dome the first time with you guys. I thought about how you would have to bury me up on the mountain.
My black belt test. It was an hour of butt kicking. Mine!
watching michael phelps win 8 gold medals. that kid is freaking tough.
I have now done 2 Triathlons. They made me real tired.
Giving birth with no pain meds…
Air Force Basic Training — San Antonio, in the heat of summer.
Oh yeah, and giving birth with no pain meds (my 2nd daughter). That was fun.
Hiked to top of Half Dome in one day. Also ran and completed Long Beach 26.2 in 2002. I gimped for 4 days after!
Hats off to all females giving birth … I can’t imagine how physically demanding that would be!
Completing a marathon, triathlon, etc. is something no one can ever take away! Congratulations …
Hiking about 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail on two occassions. Kicked my butt royally.
Giving birth, naturally, three times.
Well, I haven’t done anything “extreme” like run a marathon or summit a 14′er…but here’s my story.
At school, I was a chaplain and traditionally, we were on duty helping students move in at the beginning of fall and spring semester. The worst was a few years back when it was 110+ degrees, humid and rainy the ENTIRE time we were moving folks in. The elevators in the dorms took forever to arrive (and they scare the crap out of me), so I recall several instances of climbing way too many stairs with boxes and awkwardly heavy things in hand. We were all dead tired after that week, which also included leadership training, running freshman orientation, and getting very little sleep…but then we had to start classes the day after it was all over. It was a great bonding experience with fellow leaders and students, but man it was exhausting!
Half Iron Man: 1.5 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13 mile run. Ouchy.
Chemotherapy…..wouldn’t wish that on anybody.
OH JESSE:
the chemo was a walk in the park compared to the radiation. well – not a walk in the park but puking was better than getting zapped anyday. Having the tongue swell up about 2 times the normal size, killed the taste buds, mucus clogging everything up…
who would say God isn’t in the healing bid’ness anymore?
hiking from river to rim @ Grand Canyon
my third marathon was the hardest… it was sooo hot that day!
hiked halfdome in one day (i think about 19 miles), rode bike from san luis obispo to shell beach and back (i think about 20+ miles) and having 2 babies (no epidurals). wow…i feel pretty whimpy compared to you and heather & a bunch of other people that commented!
I agree with Firemom. Natural childbirth was pretty tough. Three times.
Picking up the phone to call my father.
Allowing an operation that would make it impossible for me to get pregnant.
Right now, the hardest thing I am doing is thinking about my waiting son in Ethiopia and not knowing if he is safe or hungry.
Physically- the hardest thing i have ever done is labor with an epidural that would not work, emergency c-section with bleeding out, hemmoraging a week later and severe anemia after that….good times!
Having my son, after two days of labor, and ending up with a C-section. It was the most physically exhausting thing I’ve ever done. Really.
Giving birth naturally three times. But then I came to my senses and had four more with the wonders of the epidural.
Ran a relay run in PA in High School… went from the State capital in PA to Carlisle. The marathon in Hershey was easier… because it didn’t have the long massive hill out of the valley the relay run did. I remember having calf cramps for weeks after that.
I did this back in June when I was 30 pounds heavier and just starting to work on getting fit. http://crossfitnorthatlanta.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/06/08/cfna_grinder_map_v1_full.jpg
San Francisco marathon last year!!
You know what?! You’re f***’n lucky if that was the worst thing you ever faced! I lost respect. Give me a break. I have fought real demons when one of my children was diagnosed with a degenerative disease and no matter what I do I will bury her one day. Get real.
Cari,
I really think Los was saying that was the hardest PHYSICAL thing he had ever done, not emotional. He has written before about many circumstances that have been painful and difficult.
That being said, I am so very sorry to hear about your sweet daughter. I do not know what you are going through, but I am sad with you and am praying for your family.
I ran the Chicago Marathon this last Sunday.I had never run in my life prior to starting training last March. Finished it..sore today:) It was a great experience.
