Dirty Nickel Around My Neck

Posted on 26. Dec, 2008 by in Family, Photography

My Favorite Christmas Gift

These are medals and crosses from Heather‘s “Nannan’s” collection.
I have been looking for some good love to place around my neck for a while.
Heather and her brother Jesse took it upon themselves to go and buy some cool new ones while reaching into the past to dig up some vintage love from the family heirlooms.
I LOVE them.
So be rest assured you will be seeing, Mary, Jesus, The Pope and a few other amazing grills on my chest in the months to come.

So do tell…
What was your favorite present this Christmas day?
Los

Not a huge presents year for us – we spend mostly on our daughter now. But my in-laws got me this doormat and it's awesome.

LOST Season 4 on DVD. I'm such a girl geek – much rather watch LOST or Battlestar Galactica than a chick flick.

The favorite thing I gave this year was a set of pink toy drums to my 3 year old daughter. My friends say, "You'll regret it" to which I reply, "Not if she becomes a famous chick drummer!"

oh,man, LOST is the best thing for us geeks!i got hooked earlier this year when the did an episode that was a review of the series up to that point.thank God for DVR's!

I've been going with the Advent conspiracy thought process for a couple of years now, and it is finally taking. Except for my mom.
My favorite gift was: I was able to worship last Sunday with my husband (who isn't a Christian), my son, his wife and children.
Particularly cool, was worshipping in the aisle with my three year old grandson!

The appointment card for Eye Candy from my wife! Looks like I'm getting some ink finally!!!

But perhaps the best thing this Christmas was putting together the toys for my kiddos and niece. My Dad, my father-in-law and I set up 2 swingsets and a trampoline! I loved the time we spent and the kids' faces when we were finished!

To hear my son say "whoa" when he saw his bike in front of the tree. He is three and this is the first year he truly realized he was getting presents and was so excited. It was great to have quality time with Chele and Asher.

  9. COxner 27 December 2008 at 3:59 am #

My best material gift was a handmade bag from my mom. It's incredible.

My best overall gift was working at a church doing youth ministry during the Christmas season. For the first time in way too many years I was involved in two Christmas Eve worship services, and it truly made Christmas seem like Christmas.

I know this will sound cheesy (no pun intended) but my best gift was a cheese grater!! I've been wanting one of those for such a long time. That and a George Foreman grill–and I got one of those for Christmas too!

My wife got the Wii fit, which is just as much a gift for me as for her! But my favorite gift that was actually for me was the new Kanye West CD, 808:s and Heartbreak.

We got new pictures on Christmas Eve of our soon to be son. This was an answer to prayer, they're the first pictures we've gotten since May. He's stinkin' cute too!

My 12-year old sister went kind of oldschool and got me a Lite Brite…SO awesome. We've been playing with it constantly.
But overall, it was getting to spend Christmas with friends. My dad left us 2 weeks ago and several of our friends had us over on Christmas Day and rescued us from having a very blue and lonely Christmas :)

  18. Pastor_T 27 December 2008 at 5:08 am #

My gift was my Mom and sister being able to fly over and spend Thanksgiving and Christmas, but my Grandma passed away and they left on Thanksgiving night. Still the greatest gift to have them here for a week.

Got a touch through case for the iPhone. Loving it. I would've said my new NC sweatshirt, but my wife has already confiscated it.

  22. Molly_Mac 27 December 2008 at 6:05 am #

We did a bit of the Advent Conspiracy, but just couldn't do it for the youngsters. My favorite gift to me was an ornament made by women in Afghanistan from my cousins who are involved heavily with mission work there.

My parents gave a guitar and some CDS to indigenous worship leaders in Guatemala through a project I started called GiveWorship. This gift touched me the most because they did it in my honor.

Of the ones I actually received? a ring from my hubby and a calendar made of photos my son made.

goats rock! they love some blackberry bushes for dinner,2 problems in wa state, blackberry bushes and mice…we have now have a goat and 2 barn cats…

      • taylorlyall 27 December 2008 at 5:15 am #

Oh yeah. I've seen goats who do that. I used to live in Olympia,WA. AC is an awesome thing. If just some people were affected by it, who otherwise would have not been, it is successful. The churches behind it have raised a ton of money the past few years though.

My fav present this year: a Holga camera. This thing is bitchin! I can't wait to get this film developed.
I'm not gonna talk about family and stuff, 'cause I guess it should almost be a given. I'm thankful EVERY DAY that my wife and I are still together. The devil is a jerk-hole. I hate his stinkin' guts. God is good. Great, even.

  32. kevin 27 December 2008 at 7:13 am #

as sappy as it sounds, it was the fact that i got to spend it with a friend and his family. I didn't get any physical presents this year except a reindeer rocking horse type thing and some hot chocolate powder packets.

I have a medal above my front door that my dad gave me. Saint something or other who is supposed to protect your home. ??? I come from a Catholic family, but I am not Catholic so I don't keep up with the "saints". Anyway, it's a kind gesture so I comply. I love the ones you have. Very pretty. Enjoy them.

    • Jim Gray 27 December 2008 at 5:33 am #

i was in mexicalli a while back and visited a catholic church in palaco.they had stuffed saints in glass caskets…hmph…wished i had my camera at the time.had to explain to kids in youth group what that was about. reminded me of cousins hunting trophy room

A framed family photo from my uncle of my mom's side of the family which has gotten very small. Both my grandparents died, as well as great Aunts and Uncles. We took a picture together at my cousin's wedding this summer and it includes my uncle and his family and my mom and our family. Shortly after my grandparent's died, my uncle and my mom met on Virginia Beach to scatter the ashes of their parents in the ocean. It was their favorite place to hang out with their family.

Attached to the photo was a poem about how the family name was lost when my Uncle and my Mom had 2 daughters each. Instead of carrying on the "Dorin" family name, some of our family members have "Dorin" as our middle names.

In the beginning was a family named Dorin
    Created by Margaret and Allen
    Who begat Diane and Junior
    With the chance of perpetuation
    Alas, four beautiful daughters
    All eventually losing their surnames,
    On the growing family tree.
Although destined to fade as the Mohicans,
at the end nevermore to be,
May the name survive before first and last,
For generations so all may see,
That there once was a family named Dorin,
Whose creators are at rest in the sea.

There was not a dry eye at the breakfast table when we all received our gifts. I will never forget that moment or this special gift!

Best present: the lack of presents! We really scaled back the craziness this year and just enjoyed each other. I won't lie though I'm gonna rock that day spa gift cert. from the hubby. SWEEEET! he ignored the scaling back memo and decided to spoil me anyway.

  45. thirty3 28 December 2008 at 7:15 am #

Something needed: Mom Gave me a $200 gift card for Stater bros-I just lost my job on Fri (Merry Christmas!) and At least I know I can eat for a while.
Something wanted-I TV for my office form Hub's parents. I'm fostering a cat who doesn't like any other cats, so she's locked in my office, which, at times, cuts me off from the rest of the house. Now I can watch TV! (In HD, even!)

my best friend was home for 6 weeks on furlough! best gift ever:)

  52. Erica 29 December 2008 at 8:54 am #

Despite a couple of awesome presents, this Christmas was a gift just to hang with family. This year was about hitting the "reset" button. My grandmother is dying of esophageal/liver cancer and it was difficult to engage her since her thought process is so cyclical. Yet, at the same time, it was sweet to be able to care for her by fixing her hair, helping to fix her meals a la puree, giving her kisses, and exhibiting patience. She's 94, lives in the same house she was born in, and my aunt is about to be passed the mantle of Matriarch.
