What Print Publications Do You Subscribe To?
I love my iPhone.
I love my laptop.
But it will be a cold day in hell when I lose that bit of excitement as I peruse the magazine section at Borders and go to sit down with 7 or so magazines.
Something about the actual turning of the pages that a “click” can’t replace.
One of the new magazines that I subscribe to is Collide.
Next month they are featuring an article on US!!!
So I recommend you go pick one up and show your grandma.
I wonder…
What ACTUAL PRINT publications do you subscribe to or buy on a regular basis and WHY?
I’ll share mine in the comment section.
So should you.
Los

Esquire (MAN news + slight liberal bent, less obsessed with cheesecake), Men's Health (to psyche myself up when in the 'loo), The Atlantic Monthly (good thoughts and insight into world events and culture) and Food & Wine (inspiration for everyday life). I gave up on Wired since the writing kept sliding down the tubes. I do not read The Economist.

1. HOMME+ – Because I am metro and proud.
2. Paste – Simple. Songcraft over fad.
3. MusicTech – If you have a Mac and record music on it, well, this is your rag.
4. Fast Company – Face it. These guys are at the top of the game. Don't let your ideals blind you.
5. Mother Jones – Non-profit news rag that keeps it REAL.
6. Juxtapoz – Presents a gallery of underground artists who influence much of the fashion, graphics, and new art we see today.
Check out L'uomo Vogue as well if you like Homme+, I think it's the pinnacle of style
- Collide :: Stay current on all that is cutting edge 'church'
- Macworld :: obvious
Dude. I am MacWorld.
I'll have to check out MusicTech too.
Can't wait to read the collide article!

High-Fructose and Free & Easy once it becomes available in the states, great art style mags.
Relevant, Writer's Digest, and my husband gets MacWorld
Men's Health (so I can read about how not to be fat), Best Life (good guy stuff that I can't afford), Business Week (keeping up to date in biz world stuff), Time (I like current events), Florida Sportsman, SW Sportsman and Shallow Water Sportsman (Cause I like to fish)….
Collide
Relevant
and Paula Deen.
She's the bomb. Don't hate
I read Martha. And not only because I think she's hot.
My wife gets Martha… and I take a peek at it once in a while.
Collide, Good (all about social justice issues. Found it through Starbucks), American Photography, Relevant, Mens Fitness, Neue…
TFW
Relevant
MacWorld
Wired
but i read most of these by internet.
Hey. That's not THE QUESTION!!!
Inc.!!!
Collide
Relevant
Rolling Stone (Can't beat it..)
MacWorld
Group. (Cliche' Youth Guy Magazine)
and I just subscribed for the neue quarterly …cuz their online stuff is legit.
So basically…all the "edgy" christian stuff…stuff about youth and college ministry…and macs. I.am.so.hip.
MacWorld, ESPN and SI….though, there are some good ones to look into above.
Allure..only b/c my mom's bestfriend re-news my subscription evey year for Christmas
I'm with you – there is something that can't be replaced in the physical turning of pages (and ripping out of pages for my ideas folder). So I keep the following mags within arms reach:
Fast Company – laptop bag inspiration – the cutting edge on business ideas/innovation
Inc. – part of the course work to my real-world MBA – always full of inspiration and ideas
Christianity Today – helps me stay in touch with what's happening in the Christian world
Collide – I like Scot McClennan so I figure I can drop $12 bucks and check out his project
I used to subscribe to GQ, Relevant and National Geographic Adventure but I found month after month they didn't get read, but just piled up. So I dropped them. I'm quite happy with my 4 mainstays.
But you've inspired me to go to Borders and peruse the mags I wouldn't want to get long term.
I'm with you. I dropped some of those you dropped as well.
Yeah it's crazy how what's important for you to read changes so quicly. e.g. I used to not like Inc. – I found it pretty boring compared to Fast Company, but then I took over the reins of the business I work for and all of a sudden Inc. became REALLY important.
When I can afford print subscriptions, I'd like to get Relevant and Collide. Right now we get the local newspaper free through my hubby's work. Wheeee, exciting.
i get all of them in print……i just read most of the articles via the web before i sit down with the mag.
1. Paste — For all the reasons everyone else has mentioned
2. The Economist — Because I'm a nerd; because it's includes in-depth stories you don't find in newspapers anymore; for its annual The World in [insert year] issue.
3. First Things — Religion, Public Life and Culture — any mag that consistently cites C.S. and Chesterton is cool in my book; Richard John Nehaus is a genius.
Everything else (fashion, MacWorld, photography) I read at the library on Sundays. Also, if Slate were a paper magazine, I'd subscribe.
I'm a fan of The Economist and The New Yorker, but that's waaay too much cash for me to lay on the table.
Amazon offers discounts every now and then and the student discount knocks about 15% off.
Relevant Magazine. Because it's awesome. Nothing else at the moment, not in my budget. I did get Women's Health last year for the fitness tips. But I had to let that one go.
Collide – cause they talk about Los…
Mens Health – cause I'm trying to get/keep in shape
Worship Leader – freeby and some decent info on how/why others do what I do
Relevant – cause everybody else does…
I too, like the tactile excitement of page-turning. But I find I access the web content too.
Well, I signed up for COLLIDE when Los mentioned his article and the offer to subscribe was posted, but I haven't gotten my first issue yet!
Esquire (only because I entered a contest and had to subscribe. It's got some good stuff now and then)
Midwest Living (cool home designs, midwest vacation ideas, and recipes – oh yeah, Art can cook!)
Enrichment Journal
Taste of Home (cooking mag)
I got The Economist for a while and really enjoyed it… but I never could read it fast enough and they started piling-up, so I pulled the plug.

Risen Magazine
And I still prefer to read the newspaper every day in print.
Risen's still in business?
Yep. I think my subscription is up now though. I'll have to resubscribe. http://www.risenmagazine.com/
Love to see someone else reads Good Magazine…love that one..ALOT

Those last two would be for my husband. All of our magazines, sans Collide, come as gifts (thanks, in-laws!).We just let go of National Geographic & Martha. My husband also brings home a weekly hand-me-down of Newsweek, which I enjoy.

I am also a big fan of Collide.

I used to get Fast Company, but dropped it when the page count went from 400 to 150. Although I continued to read on the newsstands. It still is the best, so I'll probably re-subscribe eventually.
And I'm still bummed that Vitals stopped after on 5 issues. It was THE BEST magazine.
I am not really a big fan of Christian print – and I don't subscribe or regularly read a lot – but one print I subscribe to and couldn't do with out is AdvertisingAge.
It is a great source for inspiration in marketing, what works, what doesn't, and why. Plus it feeds tons of Blog ideas like, Your Life Is Only Worth $300,000 According to TV …
I do agree with you, there is nothing like flipping through a hard copy magazine though.
Worship Leader Magazine, Time, Adventurer, Creating Keepsakes. Maybe I can get Collide too!
Luckilly I can thumb through Print , How & Juxtapoz at work. (Tshirt business) Sometimes I treat myself to Domino or Martha.

I'll have someone buy me your Collide and send it over, but I'm not sure I've ever paid money for a magazine. I think my wife used to get Cosmo and People. She may STILL get them….Not sure
.
Hot VW's.
I have a love of everything VW.
Worship Leader, Wired, Neue Quarterly
Guess I should clarify. They don't actually have it circulating anymore. But I buy old issues wherever I can find them.
OMG I can't believe no one on here subscribes to Christianity Today! It is, hands down, the best magazine I have ever read. And I read a lot, I led a book club at HPC for 2 years. No trying to pimp, just saying, I know good reading, and I consume that magazine cover to cover every month. Yancy, Colson, Gilbreath, several great contributors. It's deep but SO SO SO relevant. The New York Times and LA Times even gave props to CT because CT was able to get stories about Darfar, Uganda, etc, way before they were due to Christian missionaries on the ground in many of these areas. If you are interested in really getting inside issues like clean water, the Orphan crisis, conflicts and war torn countries, CT is the magazine for you. No, they don't pay me, I promise I am just a huge fan and have been for years.
Barista Magazine, Fresh Cup – Both are related to my industry and I honestly cannot get enough of reading up on coffee as well as other baristas.
Men's Journal, Outside – Helps meet my testosterone needs without having to look at the majority of the crap that is in Maxim or other "manly" magazines.
I don't subcribe to anything anymore. but I probably should subscribe to relevant and macworld. or just go to barnes and noble every month for a little bit?
RELEVANT
GQ – I've received this magazine since I was 17. Something about it that I love…don't judge.
That's what I read in print.
I read more electronically…but I was mention which ones since you're scolding others up-top for doing so.
Oh and now I just added Collide to that list.
My magazine with list:

Print, HOW, and Collide. I’m a designer so I use these to see what others are doing.
Print & HOW are both great mags… I enjoy looking through them when I'm at Borders
I actually became friends with Human3rror because I subscribed to Collide Magazine. They wrote an article about him and he hadn’t seen it, so I sent him the article. Pretty funny.
Collide
Relevant
Paste
Fast Company
Wired
MacWorld
The "WHY?" for all of these is just to stay on top of things and ahead of the curve… and MacWorld is mostly because they gave me a free subscription.
So I am going to confess I read this blog & I have never even held an issue of Collide…there it is! But I do get some gdod ones!

I ordered Collide back when you announced your article…still awaiting its arrival. I'm getting more excited about about it after the above reviews.
The only magazine I currently get is Leadership Journal (absolutely love it!). I used to get several others (Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Computer Arts) but found that I can only devote time to and get a LOT out of one magazine at a time.
That said, I also regularly read/browse/skim the computer, business and film sections at a local B&N, looking for interesting articles and ideas (e.g. MovieMaker, Harvard Business Review, etc).
Los, now I feel like a loser b/c I threw away my renewal card to Fast Company.
Dime
(my fix on sports culture. It's a basketball lifestyle magazine).
Paste! They also have a "Name Your Price" deal. You get the mag, a cd with about 16 songs of new indie artists. Worth whatever price you're willing to pay!
Paste- Love the variety of music. Got the digital VIP membership for Christmas, they throw in 2 extra CDs each issue I think
ESPN- my kids have the TV in the AM so it the mag and online for my sports news
National Geographic- Just something different and inspiring photography
Relevant-
Communication Art- I'm a designer/ video producer so I need some inspiration
I need to subscribe to Computer Arts but I pick it up when I stop at B&N

too little time to read all comments, so hope i'm not redundant here–but i totally feel you and the "turning real pages" deal. in fact, that is why i DON'T like the iphone, as beautiful as that little piece of technology is, i am extremely tactile. i like clicking buttons, not caressing (jabbing) a touch screen. maybe my time using the POS at starbucks turned me off to touch screens (repetative stress injury!!!).
on to the real question: apparently now i have a free subscription to parenting (parenthood?) it came with roenne's new potty! in an ideal world, i would be subscribed to domino, martha stewart living (love the martha confessions), elle decor, real simple, rolling stone, (and perhaps a wedding magazine). all my favs that go in my barnes and noble mag stack.
