Minime and Me In The Krog Tunnel

Posted on 30. Jan, 2009 by loswhit in Family, Photography

Little Los Krog Tunnel1
Check out the 3 other shots here…
My kid’s a pimp.
We are taking over the ATL while the wife and 2 girls are outta town.
Oh how I wish I had me some pocket wizards to move that light around.
I used my Nikon D300. 15 dollar tripod. SB-800 bouncing straight off the ceiling. It was right in front of us.
Very rookie setup. But as Zarias taught me… DO NOT BUY ANY GEAR YOU CANNOT BUY CASH.
So I take heed and get better with what I have until I get paid for a few shoots and can get me some toys.

What is your ghetto setup photogs?

Canon xti and a lens. Natural light baby.

Love that shot! Thanks for sharing it and your setup with us!

Have you checked out the Strobist Lighting 101 series of blog posts? I've only gotten through a couple of them so far, but thought they do a great job of discussing lots of lighting topics… -> http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101...

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:31 am #

      I love me some strobist.
But after THe One Light Workshop… I think I have too much in my head.

a D300 w/ SB-800 isn't exactly ghetto! That's pretty nice gear if you ask me.

one little suggestion, instead of pocket wizards you should check out Alienbees CyberSync options. They're a fraction of the price and do the same job. I got mine back in the fall and love them. There's so much more flexibility!

I personally shoot with a D200 and SB-80DX (a generation behind your setup)…I have some studio gear, but most of the time I stick to just the D200 with some nice glass and leave the flash at home.

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:32 am #

Dude. Thanks for that tip. Have they been good to you? I heard they fail once in a while?

      • Robert Terry 3 February 2009 at 5:40 am #

I'll second the CyberSyncs. You can get 3 of them (1 transmitter and 2 receivers) for about the cost of 1 PW. That said, with the 300 and 800 you've already got what you need for off camera lighting. Use the pop up flash as commander and take your 800 off camera. Either use TTL or manual; pretty reliable and the price is right.

P.S. I'm the guy who gave you the ride to the MARTA station after Zack's workshop back in Nov.

Nikon D40 and that's it. I do have a tripod, but I don't think I have ever used it.

  5. JakeSchwein 30 January 2009 at 11:42 pm #

I hope that is a lens cap in your pocket…or are you back on the Copenhagen?

  6. Amanda_Sims 30 January 2009 at 11:49 pm #

Pentax K100D w/ Tamron 28-200 zoom lens. Built-in annoying flash. I don't get to use it much because towncrier86 uses it for his job. But when I DO get to play with it, I LOVE it. I'm still learning. Mistakes can sometimes be cool.

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:33 am #

Yea. the one where he is turned around was a mistake. But it turned out cool!!!

  7. Travis Williams 30 January 2009 at 11:51 pm #

All you new school punks. I'm using my wife's old stuff she doesn't want any more! Canon 20D baby! Whoop whoop! And a Cannon 430EX to light the way. I will say I have a nice tripod, although I can't tell you anything about it since all the model stuff wore off. My wife's the real photographer though, not me. I just play around when I get bored.

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:33 am #

Rock it like it's 1996 baby. Own it.

    • Lana 31 January 2009 at 6:06 pm #

The 20D is a great camera! A little over three years ago it was the camera to get. Still a great camera. It will be a long time before I upgrade. I would rather have some great lenses than a new camera!!!

      • Lana 31 January 2009 at 6:07 pm #

P.S. I should clarify that I would like to have an upgraded camera PLUS some amazing lenses. Since I can only afford one, I'll go with a lens because the 20D will do anything I need it too!

  8. Rebecca Moon 30 January 2009 at 11:54 pm #

i've got a canon digital rebel xti…but i don't know how to use it to its capabilities. you said "get paid for a few shoots"…are you for hire?

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 12:15 am #

Yea. I've resorted to anything but sellingmy children for a few extra bucks.
I've been actually pretty busy doing small paid shoots.

  9. Matthew A Hawkins 30 January 2009 at 11:56 pm #

Nikon D60, SB-600 flash and a cheap tripod.
I agree, learn what you can do with what you have before you go crazy.
I've got some of my latest pics on my site.

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:33 am #

      GREAT SHOTS!!!

      • Matthew A Hawkins 31 January 2009 at 2:18 am #

        Thanks man.
Should mentioned I like these shots.
What did you use PS? Any Actions you prefer?

  10. vagabondrunn 30 January 2009 at 11:58 pm #

You have stepped up your photography game big time.
Seriously, all of those photo's look awesome that you took today.

When I'm in town with my girl, I'm requesting a photo shoot.
    Ey?

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 12:16 am #

    Great photo shots bro!

  12. stephen 31 January 2009 at 12:28 am #

    Nikon D80
    18 – 200mm 3.5
    50mm 1.8 (awesome…only $150 or less)
    SB600 w/ a omni bounce on it
    tripod
    light stand

the SB 600 will go wireless, so I just use it on a light stand and only use the tripod if i'm shooting myself (rarely happens) :)

I'm definitely not suffering fro G.A.S. ;) but I'm dying for some pocket wizards and one more flash…oh, and a second camera body…oh and an umbrella or soft box..oh and a………………..

  13. James 31 January 2009 at 12:37 am #

    Canon Digital Rebel XTi.
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Fixed Focus.
    Janky $20 tripod.
    Janky $20 camera bag.
And then Photoshop CS and LightRoom to make me look like a much photographer than I really am.

  14. Donna 31 January 2009 at 1:03 am #

These are great pics! Love little Los with the lollipop :) Great eye Los.
Have a Panasonic DMC-TZ5. Hub got it when he went to Malawi on a mission trip and it takes geat pics – simple to use and does videos as well.
Ok not from ATL – what is the KROG??

  15. loswhit 31 January 2009 at 1:31 am #

    bam. Work it.

Yea. I am a major Magic Sharp guy in the Kubota pack. And then I mess with popping them with a few layers

    • Matthew A Hawkins 31 January 2009 at 5:40 am #

I'll have to check that out. I've been using a few sets from Nichole Van – faded image has been my favorite thus far. Any others you'd recommend?
By the way I was wondering what WordPress plugin you're using for twitter?
      Thanks Los.

  19. jenae 31 January 2009 at 3:12 am #

canon 5D used to use a 20D up until a few months ago..I rent most of my lens because I am totally cash based..
but I love natural light and I am experimenting with some strobes I bought on ebay from some guy in Japan..I have some stuff on my blog too.

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 3:51 am #

Wow. You are really good!!! Amazing shots. I went to your websites and fell in love. Great job.

      • jenae 31 January 2009 at 4:15 am #

you are way too kind. Thanx so much.
your stuff on flickr is fun too!! I love the one where your boy looks back at the camera. Aren't you having a blast?

  20. Brad 31 January 2009 at 3:28 am #

    40D and a 50mm 1.4 prime lens. Love it!

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 3:51 am #

      Lusting after a 1.4 mmmmmmmm

      • Brad 31 January 2009 at 3:58 am #

It amazes me how little light you can shoot in! My current lust is for a 580exll flash and an umbrella!

        • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 4:09 am #

I just got an umbrella. Just looking for a way to get my flash off camera.

          • Brad 31 January 2009 at 4:14 am #

yeah i just started looking into pocket wizards and stuff. not sure how good they are but i was also looking into canon's st-e2 wireless deal because it's a little cheaper. i hear pocket wizards are sick though!

  21. Wes Childers 31 January 2009 at 3:30 am #

    Carlos,

No one would argue that pocket wizards aren't great but if you want to get the flash off the camera in the mean time (while you polish your skills) you should check out these remote triggers

    http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,514.html“target=”_blank”>http://http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,514.html
I have a set (and an extra receiver for a second flash) and I've been very happy with them…. And at $30 bucks for the receiver/transmitter set, you can't beat it (PWs are around $180 each!)

    • loswhit 31 January 2009 at 3:52 am #

Wow Wes. I'm all over it. Thanks!!!

  22. Gabe Taviano 31 January 2009 at 5:45 am #

Nikon D50 (now obsolete), $25 tripod and the cheapest of Nikon flashes (SB-400). Can get caught up in the light until we go mad, but to me it's all about the composition and object. Those (and the lighting to me) seemed great in these shots, Los. Keep having fun, and thanks for sharing!

  23. molly moore 31 January 2009 at 11:26 am #

Nikon D70, and I just recently got the D90. Use the SB 800 but I also have a set of studio lights that I don't use enough (octobox, standard umbrella, etc)
Oh yea, and I have some of those fun reflectors too!

  24. Trevor DeVage 31 January 2009 at 2:30 pm #

D300, 24-70mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, SB-800, Sunpak 120j, Vivitar 285, 28" Softbox, 60" Shoot through Umbrella, Set Of Pocket Wizards. It has taken me a year and a half and a lot of shoots to get it all pieced together. But I am loving my strobist set up. One Light DVD's changed my photo life and perspective.

I know the Bible says I can't covet, but I've been jealous ever since I saw you got your SLR cam. I'm still rockin' the Canon SD450 (5MP) point-n-shoot.

However, I agree with your boy ZARIUS and I'll wait 'til I have the cash in hand. Until then, thanks for letting me live out my photography dreams through your blog…

  27. Jim 31 January 2009 at 3:40 pm #

i've got some mad stuff in the techie bag that i received last night from my predecessor.there a sony hd flip and and some digital cameras. but we've used lanterns for shoots in the woods, now we use headlamps and I have a construction lamp that just boosts sunlight on the deal.

  28. Bill Whitt 31 January 2009 at 8:04 pm #

I roll with a Canon EOS 5D and the 24-105 f/4L that comes as part of the kit and 580EX II Speedlite. I love the full-size 35mm image sensor!!! (I bought it literally days before the 5D Mark II was announced, and now I'm trying to sell my 5D so I can get a Mark II that can record HD video. If anyone's interested in a great deal…)

  29. kells 31 January 2009 at 8:09 pm #

sony a100 with a built in flash I've got a tripod that has never left the bag, maybe I should get it out?
