Where Did You Grow Up?

Whenever you ask people where they are FROM, there is always some followup statement that sounds something like…
“Oh, but I grew up in LA” or “Oh but I grew up in New York”.
Like they somehow must right the wrong in their lives that has led them to Des Moines, IA.
So.
In order to cut down on the banter…
Where did you “grow up” and was your childhood culdesac as rad as the kids on E.T. had it?
Mine was amazing and it was here…

Spill it…
Where did you grow up?

82 Barberry Heights, Brevard, North Carolina…a "country" subdivision (1 acre lots) surrounded by lots of woods, and a river. I had a very idyllic childhood…very idyllic.

    • Vicki S. 29 January 2009 at 6:05 pm #

Oh, and we rocked our big wheels and bikes too!

    • Jim 29 January 2009 at 8:48 pm #

i'm jealous. but my kids are idyllic and they get idyllic missionary living, "you'll get what Jesus gives ya!"

      • VickiS. 29 January 2009 at 8:55 pm #

Yep…my adulthood has been somewhat of a contrast to my childhood but Jesus still has been good to me. I do, however, long for those carefree childhood days!

i thank God for leading me to my wife, Sharon. She was a MK/PK born in Nigeria and raised in SoCal. But her parents gave her principles and practiced what they preached. So the nomad marries the girl who's out of his range…Praise God.

yes, Austin has always been that cool

and can you believe I graduated from college and moved to Houston

and Houston……well, it just isn't as cool as Austin

      • Clayman 29 January 2009 at 6:41 pm #

LOL – you got that right. 'Course, there's money in Houston that isn't available in Austin…

We worked at GBCH in . . .04 and 05. Moved to FL for a bit after than and now we're back in good old Newnan. We've actually tossed around returning to GBCH. It's a difficult but rewarding place to work.

I love the NE, where's your favorite place in the world, other than this blog?

      • dewde 29 January 2009 at 9:04 pm #

haha! Gotta say I love Atlanta, Georgia. It's the closest place to "home" I have. As a city, it is both historic and up-and-coming. It is both sophisticated and dirty. It is high tech and redneck. It is a home town destination and an International destination.

Most of the cool of a larger city, half the expense.

        Second choice, London :-) .

How about you? What part of the NE? Most of my family is in New Hampshire.

After we got married we lived in La Crescenta, CA and then moved to Richmond,VA for four years. I love VA and my favorite place in the South is Savannah,GA. But we traveled all over the NE. I love Boston and NY. I live about an hour south of Seattle now and it's a toss up for me between Portland and Seattle. Portland is a smaller city, and if you can't get enough there, we head to Seattle.
          Peace Out!

I grew up in Maryville, TN! I recently did a similar post and my question was "Where you From?" its was more about who or what made you who you are than where you were born or spent most of your time growing up… interesting how all of it plays into where you go in life!

A little borough called Pennside just outside of Reading, PA. Lazy suburb with farm country 10 minutes away. It was idyllic except for the small town feel to the school district (you know, where everyone knows your business all the time). We now live in Manassas, VA – a pretty bustling suburb of DC. It was a bit of culture shock when we first moved down here, even after living near Philly for 5 years.

I grew up in Southern California in a perfectly Norman Rockwell-esque town called Glendora. Everyone said hello to each other, and most of the time you actually knew them from somewhere. I did live on a cul-de-sac. The neighbor kids, my brother and I used to walk to "down-town Glendora" to buy candy. I am still friends with my bestie from Myrtle Avenue. I'm travelling to Virginia for her wedding in a few months.

Most of the cool of a larger city, half the expense.

Well, not "friends", per se, but I worked with several Amish girls. I actually went to a Mennonite church growing up, but we were "progressive". We had a band and did praise choruses. And we could sit next to boys. :) I was not born into a Mennonite faily, and never wore a head covering, but some girls did.

the cul-de-sac was sweat… maybe not ET great, but great. It's ID, so it snows. And my dad had an excavation business. In the winters he would plow the streets of the neighborhood and bring the snow to our street and make a big snow pile for us. That was fun. So was watching it melt and being able to sled until mid-April! Our property backed up to some empty lots and to a drainage ditch. Tons of fun year round! Thanks

I split my "growing up" time evenly between Pflugerville, TX (with it's silent P!) and Chesterfield, MO (just outside of STL). Now my fam. lives in Dallas and I'm in South Korea! My Dad has vowed never ever to leave Texas again. I'm super jealous sometimes of those people that grew up in one place for forever!!

Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
    When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

I grew up in Baton Rouge, LA. We ran around until dark, building club houses, spying on "enemy" gangs, looking for coke bottles to turn in for cash and then head to 7-11. My childhood was like Little Rascals meets the ET kids. My home was far from perfect, but I loved being a kid.

  180. Diana 30 January 2009 at 1:56 pm #

I grew up in Winston Salem, North Carolina. It was a beautiful peaceful town. My husband grew up in Siberia town Kurgan, which was then the USSR then moved to Moscow and was there when the iron curtain came down. He remembers seeing the tanks in the street. We lived in COMPLETELY different worlds, but God had a plan to bring us together!

Oak Grove Oregon, just outside Portland Or P-town I grew up in a killer 1920's craftsman home on a street that had a neighbors front yard with a 6ft high build up or burm that make for a perfect jump for my bmx. We were close enough that we could ride to the river or the schools or skateboard to the local duncan doughnuts to hit a killer curb for rail-slides and to have some coffee and doughnuts as well.

  189. Michelle 30 January 2009 at 9:32 pm #

777 Ring Landing Rd, Casco, Maine- we had it better than the ET kids- we had bikes and ramps, forts and a big 6 foot rock, the lake and 10 kids born within 7 years of each other living within 6 houses- life was good, but now that I think of it we never an ice cream truck

Although, especially after the Super Bowl, there's parts of me that want to move back to Pittsburgh…but I've been down here for 21 years and was there for 13, so I guess that makes Georgia "home."
