Where Did You Grow Up?
Whenever you ask people where they are FROM, there is always some followup statement that sounds something like…
“Oh, but I grew up in LA” or “Oh but I grew up in New York”.
Like they somehow must right the wrong in their lives that has led them to Des Moines, IA.
So.
In order to cut down on the banter…
Where did you “grow up” and was your childhood culdesac as rad as the kids on E.T. had it?
Mine was amazing and it was here…
1564 Country Squire Ct. Decatur GA, 30033

Spill it…
Where did you grow up?
Los

Wenatchee, WA
I just would like to say that name over and over…
WenatcheeWenatcheeWenatcheeWenatcheeWenatchee
qwhat i think is you're mocking it. lol!
WA state rocks, that's why I reside there.
I'm with Los on that one- what a fun town to say over and over
I grew up in Washington Court House, Ohio. Small Rural town in South West Ohio.
My wife's family is from Washington Court House originally.
I knew a couple from that town/area i think- Dan and Ellen Raike
My cousins live there & it's where we have our family Thanksgiving every year – small world!
Atlanta…. American by Birth, Southern by the Grace of God.
82 Barberry Heights, Brevard, North Carolina…a "country" subdivision (1 acre lots) surrounded by lots of woods, and a river. I had a very idyllic childhood…very idyllic.
Oh, and we rocked our big wheels and bikes too!
i'm jealous. but my kids are idyllic and they get idyllic missionary living, "you'll get what Jesus gives ya!"
Yep…my adulthood has been somewhat of a contrast to my childhood but Jesus still has been good to me. I do, however, long for those carefree childhood days!
i thank God for leading me to my wife, Sharon. She was a MK/PK born in Nigeria and raised in SoCal. But her parents gave her principles and practiced what they preached. So the nomad marries the girl who's out of his range…Praise God.
Born and raised and grew up in Wichita Kansas…. and did even more growing up in Illinois over the last 10 years at the age of 52
Shreve Ohio, North East Ohio
And did you like it?
Austin, TX
New York City
What part of NYC?
u left nyc for ohio? sorry, i just have to ask for the story behind that one!
The quick version since I get asked often. I worked in the WTC, fell apart ,lost nearly everything, met an amazing woman (she's from Ohio), moved, married and here I am.
OK. You need a blog post on that one
Los, I have started that post 34784729 times. Still trying.
Has Austin always been that cool?
yes, Austin has always been that cool
and can you believe I graduated from college and moved to Houston
and Houston……well, it just isn't as cool as Austin
LOL – you got that right. 'Course, there's money in Houston that isn't available in Austin…
grew up in Houston, hated it. Went to school near Austin – loved it. Moved back to Houston, hated it. Moved away and still think about moving back to Austin!
I need to go down to TX, I've only had the distinct pleasure of driving through while moving cross-country. So many cows, how'd I miss Austin?
Newnan , Georgia, where we pretend we're from Atlanta
I went to Creekside High School…Where did you go?
Good old Newnan High School. I used to work for GA Baptist Children's Home, our high schooler kids went to Creekside.
I am familiar with the GA Baptist Children's Home! Nice to meet you! What year did you come out?
We worked at GBCH in . . .04 and 05. Moved to FL for a bit after than and now we're back in good old Newnan. We've actually tossed around returning to GBCH. It's a difficult but rewarding place to work.
Awesome.
I grew up in… California, Virginia, Alabama, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, California, Texas, Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, Nevada, Texas, Colorado, Alabama… in just about that order
Uh, how come?Military? or Gypsies?
actually both… early on, military family, then my wife and I traveled around the country doing conventions in our motor home for 5 years (I also worked for the airlines and moved quite a bit then too). Today I hardly travel at all but have always loved it
Planet Earth. Military brat.

I love the NE, where's your favorite place in the world, other than this blog?
haha! Gotta say I love Atlanta, Georgia. It's the closest place to "home" I have. As a city, it is both historic and up-and-coming. It is both sophisticated and dirty. It is high tech and redneck. It is a home town destination and an International destination.
Most of the cool of a larger city, half the expense.
Second choice, London
.
How about you? What part of the NE? Most of my family is in New Hampshire.

After we got married we lived in La Crescenta, CA and then moved to Richmond,VA for four years. I love VA and my favorite place in the South is Savannah,GA. But we traveled all over the NE. I love Boston and NY. I live about an hour south of Seattle now and it's a toss up for me between Portland and Seattle. Portland is a smaller city, and if you can't get enough there, we head to Seattle.
Peace Out!
We moved every year… Not military just unstable family life.
Aurora, Longmont (x3), Loveland, Ft. Collins, Colorado; Riverside, Hesperia, Redding, Long Beach, Fullerton, Bakersfield, California
Zoiks. I hereby induct you into the honorary military brat society. I can do that because I just made up the society. And all the rules. Welcome! We've been looking for members just like you!

Seoul?
A bit more rural than Seoul (http://tinyurl.com/czatr4).But close enough to visit. My family lived there while I was in college so I "lived" there in the summers.

Hahah! That's great
true, true.I was raised on cable tv
Show Low, Arizona! Named after a card game that two drunk cowboys played to decide who gets to name the town… the winner picked the name of the card game. Had a farm, some horses and goats and all that… then I moved to the city and got the black lung.
Ha! My town was named as the result of a poker game, too.
Clinton Twp, MI
Just west of Rochester, NY a small college town called Brockport, NY

ahh thats cool! thats a really nice area, great choice in a place to move!
well, who knows, maybe we will see each other… that would be cool!
I grew up in Maryville, TN! I recently did a similar post and my question was "Where you From?" its was more about who or what made you who you are than where you were born or spent most of your time growing up… interesting how all of it plays into where you go in life!
Hey there Andy, from Townsend! My hubby works in Murvyl….
I grew up in Alcoa, TN right between Maryville and Knoxville. Cherry St in a house with a lot backed up to a cow field and a tire swing in the back yard!
I have a friend who grew up on Cherry Street. Did you know the McCulloughs?
Deer Lodge, MT… originally named "Home of the White Tail Deer"

Amish Country, Pennsylvania. Seriously. No, I'm not Amish. Yes, I had a phone, running water and power. Then I moved to the South. Ironically, I still have to answer the same questions.
HA HA HA. <sarcastic, insincere laugh>
The other night when we were all leaving the bookstore, I only asked you about the indoor plumbing because y'all moved to Mississippi!

My youngest bro was born there. I was actually born in OKC, Ok. lived there a whole year of my life and grew up in Tyler until I was 13 y/o and family moved to Dallas.

another shout out for IOWA! not des moines, but woolstock, population 201. and it was awesome! i heart iowa!!!
Off E. 116th St. on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. It was 80s ghetto fabulous: the corner store, winos, Now & Laters, candy cigarettes, Huffy bikes and dudes who walked the street w/ the boom box up to their ears — until I almost got shot on my street and we moved to the 'burbs when I was 13.
Wow. I dreamt of your street when I was a kid

Deer Park, New York; Belfonte, Pennsylvania; Geneva, Ohio; and finally Rochester, Indiana.
I wish we'd have stayed in New York.
San Antonio, Texas. Not the greatest part of town, but the greatest breakfast tacos in the world. I miss it) :

The hospital I was born in in this small Minnesota town, is 2 blocks from my house right now. I left for only 3 years, and came back. Even though I spent my whole life plotting how to get away. Knowing I wanted to raise a family, my perspective really changed.
I was born in Vegas, but grew up in Corpus Christi. That's how I tell it. 'Course, that leaves out Morehead, KY, Princeton, IL, Pahrump, NV and Dublin, CA…

I grew up in a lot of parsonages in Alabama… all over. My favorite was in Gadsden. I've also lived in Georgia for ten years, and have lived in Tennessee (now) for almost ten!
Semiahmoo, WA
Augusta, GA
Moved 13 times in 17 years within the same city, so when we had a culdesac, it was the place to be!

I went to elementary school in Justin
We went to Bridgeport camp all the time!! And you have a Walmart within 20 minutes, don't hate
haha, I love it! I'm used to driving 15 minutes to get to Walmart. We just recently got a McDonalds. Momentous occasion in the life of Bridgeport!
Detroit MI, 48224. No culdesac. The city is basically a grid. That being said lots of sweet old growth elm trees, which are now all gone.
i did have a rad neighborhood. I grew up in Pulaski VA. Not glamorous at all. Our neighborhood kids played all day everyday though. Basketball, football, baseball, spotlight, you name it, we played it. Good times!
God's country in Oklahoma with ponds, a creek, rattlesnakes, cows, horses, cats, dogs, tree houses and a barn loft full of hay to play in. I'd love to be there again even though I really, really don't like snakes!!!
Little town in southwest V.A. Oakwood. Very rural, no supermarkets, movie theaters, police office, etc. The houses in the hollow (pronounced holler) weren't even numbered. You went to the desk at the P.O.
Jenison, MI… on Baldwin – when it was a 2 lane road (now its a 5 lane road). My best friend lived right behind me on a culd-a-sac and it was a slow road. We had huge back yards, sand boxes, bikes… the works. I had the best childhood ever.
Azores, Portugal
Air Force Brat. I have recordings of me speaking fluent Portuguese. Can't remember any of it.
Portland, Indiana…Wauchula, Florida…Cincinnati, Ohio (westside, none of that eastside stuff)
I also grew up in Des Moines, IA. Really love it here. Thanks for the recognition, Los! Haha
A little borough called Pennside just outside of Reading, PA. Lazy suburb with farm country 10 minutes away. It was idyllic except for the small town feel to the school district (you know, where everyone knows your business all the time). We now live in Manassas, VA – a pretty bustling suburb of DC. It was a bit of culture shock when we first moved down here, even after living near Philly for 5 years.
I didn't grow up, and I don't plan to, but I guess you mean where I lived? Well, that'd be Vero Beach FL, Ypsilanti MI, Memphis TN, Baxley GA, Glen Burnie/Millersville MD… I guess that covers them all.
Born in Tallahassee, Florida at a very young age. Moved to Troy, Alabama before I was a year old. We lived there for the next nine years or so before moving thirty minutes down the road to Enterprise, Alabama, where I stayed until moving back to Troy ten years later to finish college.
Riggins, Idaho. It doesn't get any more po-dunk than that and I loved it!

Louisville, AL 30 miles from the nearest Wal-Mart lol
I had a fraternity brother that was a youth minister at a Baptist church there. Did you go to church there?
Yes I have since around 2001
He was a youth minister at Louisville Baptist Church, but that was back in the early / mid-nineties.
I would probably know the name but that's before my time there lol
Thanks for making me feel old.

Nacogdoches, TX – Born and raised, went to college and never to return… i think…
Fayetteville, NC or Fayettenam as it's known to those from there.
I grew up in Southern California in a perfectly Norman Rockwell-esque town called Glendora. Everyone said hello to each other, and most of the time you actually knew them from somewhere. I did live on a cul-de-sac. The neighbor kids, my brother and I used to walk to "down-town Glendora" to buy candy. I am still friends with my bestie from Myrtle Avenue. I'm travelling to Virginia for her wedding in a few months.
Lubbock, Texas – the best place to raise a family because they can't get into a lot of trouble, but the worst place to grow up because . . . you can't get into a lot of trouble. :0) GOOOO RAIDERS!
I grew up at 1015 Fairwood Lane, Acworth, GA 30101. That's in Brookstone II subdivision in Cobb County. Right on the cul-de-sac. We had the only flat driveway, so all the kids came over to our house to play. It was pretty much awesome. I have the best memories from there. Miss it a lot. I live in NJ now, but definitely claim GA as home.
Daytona Beach, FL….MTV Spring Break, Nascar, and Bike Week, all in the same place. What more could I ask for?
Lincoln, Nebraska – Go Big Red!!!
The other side of the world; Durban South Africa (Durbs, ekse)
Naperville, IL! Still Here! When people don't know where it is we just say Chicago… Fun fact… Naperville is the 3rd best place to live in the U.S. right now! Hoot!
Ultimately, Marietta, NY which is about 20-30 minutes outside of Syracuse (10 acres of land, 500 foot drive-way up a hill, woods behind the house, a sweet basement) and far enough away where it would be snowing at my house and RAINING closer to town…
I grew up in Simi Valley California.
224 Marguerite Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Pronouced Ki-a-hoe-gah. Or just "The Falls" if you are from there.

I guess now that I moved from L.A. to WA state, people think I'm from L.A.
I'm from God, He sends me out. He also cuts my hair.
-as a note I praise God that Young Life student ministries was operating at Mt. Shasta,CA. God used them to pull me in into the pool. Praise God.

All around Florida, Dad worked construction: Leesburg, Okeechobee, St. Augustine, Ormond Beach, Kissimmee, St. Cloud
St Augustine is one of my favorite places
I love it, too. I don't remember living there, I was under a year old, but when we lived in Ormond Beach, it was a favorite field trip place.
My wife graduated from HBHS.
in texas (san antonio and houston mainly)…and, yes we lived on a cul-de-sac.
Porterville, CA
I grew up in a teeny tiny town called Cobram in the south eastern part of Australia
haha! Gotta say I love Georgia. It's the closest place to "home" I have. As a city, it is both historic and up-and-coming. It is both sophisticated and dirty. It is high tech and redneck. It is a home town destination and an International destination.

Cottage Grove Oregon. It's a small logging community of 8000. It's the covered bridge capital of Oregon. It used to be a great place to live. It's since turned into one of the largest areas in Oregon for meth labs & pot fields.
Well, not "friends", per se, but I worked with several Amish girls. I actually went to a Mennonite church growing up, but we were "progressive". We had a band and did praise choruses. And we could sit next to boys.
I was not born into a Mennonite faily, and never wore a head covering, but some girls did.
Let me tell you, though. Those folks can COOK! WOW!
I had a lot of Mennonite friends from Fresno,CA. One of my favorite commentary writers was DE Hiebert. He taught at the Mennonite Brethren Seminary in Fresno,Ca.
533 Kearney Place Meridian, ID 83642
the cul-de-sac was sweat… maybe not ET great, but great. It's ID, so it snows. And my dad had an excavation business. In the winters he would plow the streets of the neighborhood and bring the snow to our street and make a big snow pile for us. That was fun. So was watching it melt and being able to sled until mid-April! Our property backed up to some empty lots and to a drainage ditch. Tons of fun year round! Thanks
Baltimore, MD – still here and loving it
Grew up in Des Moines, IA… moved to Minneapolis, MN… then back to Des Moines, IA because it is SO cool here! (I'm not kidding). We're launching a new church downtown Des Moines this fall. Come check us out!
Jonesboro, GA. Graduated from a highschool in the county that has currently lost its accreditation (first time that has happened in the country in over 30 years), and more specifically, from the highschool whose dance team performed a strip tease of sorts at the halftime of the basketball game. Marion, North Carolina Oh my goodness. Small town in mountains of western NC — rode my bike on Main Street after five, worked at [the] Winn Dixie, ordered double barrel hamburgers from The Harvest, never locked a door. Got out alive.
Long Island, NY and i'm literally the ONLY person in my ENTIRE family that does not live there now. Seriously, cousins, aunts, uncles, second cousins, they all live within 40 minutes of each other. I live in Centreville, VA now and would probably go back in a heartbeat if i could.

Is your reference to Des Moines similar to someone else tweeting, “True confession but I’m in one of those towns where I scratch my head and say, ‘I would die if I had to live here.'”?
I grew up in Fridley, MN and have moved all the way to MPLS (6 whole miles).
I grew up in Fayetteville, AR (home of the University of Arkansas) and now live in…….wait for it……….Fayetteville, AR. I just turned thirty and my wife is finishing up her dual master's in counseling and marriage and family therapy and then we. are. out. of. here.

Along the banks of the TN River in Knoxville.
Stockbridge Ga, then moved to Columbus GA when I was 12
Goffstown, NH, on a deadend street. I grew up, moved four houses away from my folks ,and so, I have lived on the same street my entire life. I have been able to watch my children play where I played, sledding down the same hill, playing in the same woods, walking the same trails, picking blueberries from the same patch, etc.. It has been awesome! I can not wait until I have grandchildren so I can go and revisit all the same haunts with them by the hand. God has been so good to me!
Tiffin, OH – at least 2 hours away from a real city no matter which way you turn! When asked, I typically just say I'm from the middle of a corn field in Ohio.

I grew up in Baton Rouge, LA. We ran around until dark, building club houses, spying on "enemy" gangs, looking for coke bottles to turn in for cash and then head to 7-11. My childhood was like Little Rascals meets the ET kids. My home was far from perfect, but I loved being a kid.
I grew up in Winston Salem, North Carolina. It was a beautiful peaceful town. My husband grew up in Siberia town Kurgan, which was then the USSR then moved to Moscow and was there when the iron curtain came down. He remembers seeing the tanks in the street.
