Disturbing Strokes

Posted on 16. Jun, 2009 by loswhit in Creativity

When filming a video, most creatives think of the camera first and the song second.
HEre is a great example of how a change in music changes the entire storyline.
We all remember Diff’rent Strokes. Well, if you are in your 30’s you do. :)

Here is the opening to the show with the original theme song (sung horribly by some dude with a 4 track recorder)

Same opening with different music…

Everything matters…
Now please call the cops and report that creepy old man.

Los, everything definitely matters!! Holy cow, that last one was creepy!

And could that original music have been just a tick more terrible? Wow!

This is one of those fantastic paradoxes of this faith. Everything matters and nothing matters. We are constantly growing and changing, but there is nothing new under the sun. God knows every hair on our heads (well, some of us hahaha) yet it is all meaningless, just chasing the wind. Perhaps these are the bookends that we are given to keep from falling into a chasm of self-importance on the one side or finding ourselves so small in comparison to God that we are paralyzed in our nothingness.

Yup, that's what the Different Strokes intro makes me think about. When exactly did I become such a big geek?

You need to write a book. Oh wait…

    Too funny.

That is too creepy!! But crazy how something that simple can radically change the impact of something. Maybe we should all take it more serious the music we play pre service, the music we play during service, in videos, and post service. Maybe the impact of the morning would be different.
    OR
We could just play creepy music when the offering time comes!!!

Jake, good points, especially about what is played prior to the start of a service.

  11. Brad Ruggles 16 June 2009 at 4:42 pm #

That's awesome. Wonder if it works the other way around. Could we add some Album Leaf or Coldplay to Kirk Cameron clips from Fireproof and actually make it cool??? ;-)

I want someone to cut together the creepy opening with the "Bicycle Man" child molestation episode with Gordon Jump.

I totally did something like this last fall for a communications project. I made a video detailing how music can greatly change the feel of a clip. I took a battle scene from Brevehart that originally had no music. Then I played it again and put some Metallica behind it, and then played it one more time to the tune of the Benny Hill theme song. The scene went from epic battle, to brutal massacre, to monty python sketch. It was epic.

I think I'm more disturbed by the re-recording of the original song. How can anyone ever disrespect Alan Thicke like that?
