I’m Addicted To My Family

Heather and the kids are in California the next 15 days without me.
Since it’s so freaking expensive to fly out there with my clan, they are visiting everyone in one big swoop.
This sucks the life out of me and spins me close to depression but I’m looking forward to what God is going to show me in the stillness of my world the next 2 weeks.
I’m looking forward to diving into some deep study.
What studies have you guys been loving lately?
Specific books of the Bible? Specific study plans?
Habla me.

Word, brotha. Right there with you. (Of course, I'm referencing my family, not yours. That would be a little weird.)

Since you are starting a new journey in your life, study Joshua. Whenever I would have a new venture in my life my mom would always make me read (out loud to her) Joshua 1:9. It's always encourages me to be bold and courageous in life.

May sound cliche but, King David is still the man when it comes to the creative mind. Psalms and Proverbs, back and forth. Always a great study when I have a lot of time alone. Hedge around ya man. Be strong….

I was just going to suggest this! I am doing Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed—a 6 week study on the life of David. It's geared for women, but would still be relevant for you! And with all your quiet time you could probably knock it out in 15 days. :)

Praying (RIGHT NOW) that God will reveal Himself to you in new ways!

i've been kickin it through psalms recently. as a worship pastor, it's always really refreshing for me to read where a lot of the songs we sing come from.

I've been spending a lot of time with a specific study on the sovereignty of God. And while going through the Biblical texts on the subject I've been reading Greg Boyd's book The God of the Possible. Not necessarily convinced of his conclusions but an enriching study so far.

    Carlos,
    That's a great addiction.
I'm studying Ecclesiastes right now and it's full of perspective for life.
Loving it, but my head is spinning from it all.

    The Institute of Christian Resources.
Under the "Study Resources" tab you will find audio, dvd and video courses. There is currently more of the audio material, but the video and dvd materials are being built up. The audio materials have full on Bible College courses from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, MO.
Mark Moore's Acts material is top notch.
Mark Scott's Gospel of Mark material is unparrelled.
And I'm just a fan of Matt Proctor's course on Christian Living.
    Enjoy.

I hope that takes longer than 2 weeks because that book is MASSIVE.

      • Jlynn 29 June 2009 at 9:00 pm #

I've been on it for two months…no where near finished…love it though

Just started Matthew. Had the coolest thought while reading: Jesus wasn't a "Pastor." Friend of sinners; Rabbi; Master; Lord; Messiah; Son of Man; the carpenter's son… but not "Pastor."

John R.W. Stott has a book called "Sermon on the Mount" – GREAT commentary and study of Jesus' longest speech to the people. I studied it in school several years ago, and I recently taught through it for 6 months with high schoolers at my church, so I dug even deeper personally this time. Really good stuff worth checking out.

Reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan again. Such a challenging, refreshing book!

  22. Jennifer V. 29 June 2009 at 1:15 pm #

The book of Acts. crazy and inspiring to read how so many people were united. in one place. seeking God in one accord. and hungry for His power.

Audience Of One by Mike Pilavachi. Warrior Poets of the 21st Century by Robin Mark. How Would Jesus Lead Worship by Sam and Sara Hargreaves. The Book of John.
I know how you feel man. My wife and daughter went away for 4 days last month and I was lovesick missing them. Strength to you bro! May you have an intimate encounter with Jesus during this time!
    Grace and Peace…

I've been walking through the book of Romans, one chapter a day for the last week. I hit chapter 7 today!

I've needed a reminder aotu God's unconditional and TOTALLY unique love, lately, and Hosea always has a way of bringing that back into focus, for me. It's been helpful lately with a lot that's been going on…

    Matthew 6.
Three times Jesus has the same underlying theme under the 1st three subheadings. I think he meant it. :)

Our small group has been doing James MacDonald's 'Lord Change My Attitude'. That's a great study, but it's a 10 week thing so it's more of an FYI than anything else. But I do suggest you take a look at the clip I posted here where he talks about how people should be grateful for their positions in ministry (no matter how small it may seem): http://justlivingthelife.com/?p=378

As for what to read. I would suggest the book of James. You have two weeks and this would easily fit that schedule but is still deep stuff. When our small group did a study on this book, I used the following as a guide for myself when I was preparing for it:

    http://www.swapmeetdave.com/Bible/JamesIntro.htm

There's great questions there (as well as the answers). Whatever you choose, I'll be praying for you.

BTW, I'm going to be in Atlanta this weekend. The fam is going to visit Buckhead on Sunday (9:00am service).

Jeremiah is amazing: The God who's grace is wrath to break the people's hardened hearts.

Mark is equally amazing: The Jesus who's authority is expressed in his miracles, none of which is done the same way twice. Is this how God works? (Plus, I love the disciples who just don't get it. "Don't you understand yet?")

  31. Brian 29 June 2009 at 3:55 pm #

Three thoughts come to mind: 1) The Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts = WOW! 2) The Tabernacle (Moses and David's tabernacle) and applications to worship, foreshadows of Christ, etc. Some good resources out there on these…. 3) Read Kings and/or Chronicles along side of the prophets (major and minor)– may be too big for two weeks…. Blessings!

Henri Nouwen’s “Way of the Heart”, speaks about taking time to shut our MOUTHS (inside our brains too) and listening…you wouldn’t believe what begins to take over when we sit silent. Craziness (or rather mainly the thing that our flesh craves the most). Try it out…but read the book (its short).

    I was definitely refueled.

Diving into Hebrews 11, and then tracking down the side OT stories mentioned in the chapter.

wow, Los. my fam is gone for 12 days seeing fam/friends without me. Gonna be crazy. Trust me, you will be lifted up. And remember, temptation is strong in these times. I am looking forward to finishing two books, writing two sermon series', and sleeping all the way through the night. Ha. Blessings, dewde.

I'm studying intercession. I typed the word into BibleGateway.com and PDF-ed 7 pages of scripture that are examples or references. I'm going through them now to categorize and make notes on each. Fun stuff. o.O Sometimes I wonder why I didn't go to Grad school.

If you want some good preachin', one of my favorite not-so-popular guys is Pastor Brian Zahnd from Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. He preaches, but he preaches smart too. You can learn stuff and get revelation in the same sermon. http://wolc.com Dig it.

  38. Lori Biddle 30 June 2009 at 1:58 am #

Carlos – Hey, it was good to meet you at the tables at the back of the Saddleback auditorium (remember my hubby Ron and me??!

I also had to chuckle (not in a disrespectful way) at the Pastor's at your workshop that were so overwhelmed by technology, not that I"m a whiz, but at least I try!

Did you get to spend any time with family while out there? I would NOT like to be without mine for 15 days…so you have my sympathy!

I'm praying for all the new things coming in your life!

I've been doing the YouVersion bible in a year readings (yes, I know they're based on a really old reading plan, but just like the Bible, it's effectiveness never change

I've been reading through Isaiah, specifically chapeter 50+. I spent some time in a single room writing down the verses that struck me and palced them all over the room. It became my own "tent of meeting". Kinda shocked my wife when she got home…

29 year old former north pointer, former willow creeker….now in tx. found an amazing (much smaller) church with a phenomenal communicator, matt chandler. we're currently going through luke 18 and the sermon from 6/20 in particular was phenomenal. discussing the spectrum of those who grew up in church and those that didn't. PLUS how many times have you had a boyz II men reference in church?!? jigga what!?!
    bless God!
