7 Keys To Starting A Movement

Posted on 02. Jun, 2009 by loswhit in Deep Stuff

[The best 3 minutes of your day]
A few things I think we can learn from this video.
1. One man can start a movement.
2. A movement need not be started by the most skilled member of the movement.
3. When beginning your movement and you look around and no one else is joining the dance, just keep dancing.
4. When the one guy who joins your movement slowly fades away, keep going.
5. Before you know it, the people joining your movement won’t even know you started it.
6. When your movement takes a life of it’s own, just let go. There will be no stopping it.
7. The very people who are staring at you like your nuts as you movement alone, will be the very same people dancing the hardest in the end.

Keep dancing kids, Keep dancing.
Los

That is 27 kinds of awesome. It reminds me of college. I used to do the craziest dances in the club because I knew if I just acted confident other people would start doing it too. Worked like a charm every time. I can't tell you how many plaid shirt frat guys flapped their arms like a chicken because of me. My friends thought I was nuts at first but eventually came to appreciate the genius.

  6. Keith Barger 3 June 2009 at 11:47 am #

1st guy joined – nothin. But 2nd guy joined – BINGO!
2nd guy was the guy with influence. The guy whose friends will follow wherever he goes.
You gotta find that 2nd guy.

  7. Karen 3 June 2009 at 11:48 am #

At around 2:25. The guy with the red speedo. He was late, but he had a great hat.

Los, I like your view of it as well. My fear and my cynicism tell me that part of the reason one person can start a movement is because so many people are mindless sheep, looking to be cool and join the crowd. You're right that many won't know who started the movement, because they don't care–they only care that there IS a movement, and that they should be part of it too (why? they don't think of why). Sorry to be all Debbie Downer, maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed… :)

  12. RickEstes 3 June 2009 at 1:27 pm #

Boldness! Pure uninhibited boldness! We all need a little of that. Thanks for sharing Los!

  13. Jesse Phillips 3 June 2009 at 1:29 pm #

    WOW! GREAT insight!

interesting to note, the end result wasn't as weird or silly as the beginning – perhaps the more people join, they neutralize (or vanilla-ize), or water down, make more palatable your original intention. hmmm, it occurs to me, this might be what happened to the original Christian movement.

And it seems, the more people join, the more people join. More b/c so many people are there, rather than for the original vision.

    This is….so inspiring.
    'Lovin' it Los.
Gives me confidence to do something. =)

  15. Misty 3 June 2009 at 1:55 pm #

Infectious. Something was happening. I was taken by those who were "running" to get in on the happenin'.. whatever it was. So- let's create a movement to get 'em running to the cross. Yeah, baby!

  16. Jesse 3 June 2009 at 2:01 pm #

    LOL, cool stuff bro.

  17. Dan King 3 June 2009 at 2:01 pm #

    Dude! That was AWESOME!!!!

I can also see that one should not care what others think…
It also seems to take a bit of courage for the first few followers to break through the potential judgement from the onlookers as well…

Great stuff dude! Thanks for sharing such great insight!

  18. brewster 3 June 2009 at 2:01 pm #

    YES! seriously YES!

And you dont have to dance like everyone else. Do your dance. The only one you are capable of doing, the one you are called to do. Someone else is ALREADY doing the OTHER dance. Do the dance that fits you!

    lets dance.

  19. VeryValerie 3 June 2009 at 2:05 pm #

I love that people start out staring and by the end are RUNNING to be part of it as soon as possible. In some ways it is just as bold to be the 2nd or 3rd person to join as it is the initial person. Seeing someone and recognizing the potential of a movement and having the courage to get behind them and join takes courage.

  25. ChrisJohnson 3 June 2009 at 3:18 pm #

ironically the sound-track to this awesome illustration Los has given us is this… " I've got to be unstoppable" – may we the church understand that as we step out and "move" with the Holy Spirit's leadership we will be unstoppable. Jesus even said the gates of Hell would not prevail against His church!
    – right on for posting this blog, Los

I swear on a stack of sacred texts, I'm not (too) feminist, and I'm not being over-picky….but…

Oh, screw it, who am I kidding.

I'm an alpha-female, and extremely meticulous so I'm suggesting #1 of your inspiring post might be revised to represent women as well as men.

Your post is outstanding. These 7 tips are a great template for living life-out-loud, not just starting a momentum.

    Peace out.
