This is my house in Riverside, CA.  Heather and I bought this house thinking we would live in it till the girls got to close to high school age.
Little did I know Atlanta would come knocking.
We bought this casita in 2006 for 400k. We luckily had some equity in our previous home so we put down a nice little down payment.
I got this in the mail today.

house

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I called Heather with some “good news”.

Hey babe!!! Our property tax bill has been literally cut in half!!!
Isn’t that amazing?!

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. – Isaiah 40:8
Thank God I’ve never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse.

I think assessments are regularly half of the appraisal value. At least here in Michigan. But funny you should be talking about this… I've been on the phone today trying to get our mortgage refinanced and I'm worried our appraisal will be less that it was before because the market is in the tank, thus not allowing the refinance, thus not allowing me to stimulate the economy with my newly freed up funds. Crazy system we got here. :)

That's a great perspective!! The people I talk with in my office need this perspective!

    I mean, it's a beautiful house, @ 219 or 400k…

Dude, we almost spent $400k on a house in NorCal right before God called us to Myrtle Beach. We had the offer accepted, earnest money exchangeged, plenty down, great credit, but the bank wouldn't give us a loan. Thank God for that. I can't imagine the crap we'd be in now. We definitely would own our house here.

I love that phrase, never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse. I'll never forget when I heard Louie Giglio use it in a series at NP once. It's a great reminder of what we don't take with us (pretty much everything).

    Sorry Los

Love your attitude on this. Lower taxes 8)

But seriously, when the market bounces back, I won't be surprised to see it go right back up, and you'll be showing off a notice of increase. Just my guess..

Riverside, Ca – the epicenter of the real estate market crisis…

Yes we could form a club…we should celebrate lower taxes when I come out to see you guys!

Dang homey. I have a bunch of family left in Riverside, and they said the economy is seriously hurting.

    Good perspective though!

That's a beautiful house. You've got the right attitude about it for sure… C'est la vie!
Just wondering though if you are always able to look at it that positive or if it depends on the day. We've had some big ouches with our houses and finances and most days we laugh about it, but some days it just hits me really hard.

Here's the funny thing for me – I know this. This is common sense. Stuff doesn't make us who we are. So why does it always seem like such a battle to continually keep this in the front of our minds? Right, because this is life and common sense doesn't always make so much sense.

Good for you for laughing! Sometimes that's the best response we can have.

funny thing is…i just found out today that we are not losing our home…we fought with the mortgage company since November and I even forewarned them that a layoff was imminent. Today I got the UPS package and the sale has been put off…praise God.

In Australia, I can't imagine a house that huge ever having been anywhere near as inexpensive as $400K if it was close to civilisation and in an area where you'd actually want to live.

To think it's now worth half is totally mind boggling. But then, we watched a doco on Detroit, and I think $200K would get you 50% of the city right now, wouldn't it?

Welcome to the club, bro. I'm upside-down in mine, although the loss wasn't as great. Just happy to have a house I love and a mortgage payment I can afford.

Although, as you've learned, there certainly is strong evidence to suggest that such ventures (such as purchasing a home) can really put a kink in following God's plans. Renters FTW! :)

Easy come, easy go. We bought our house in 2002 for $250,000. In 2004 value went up to $375,000. Now it's back down to $250,000. Everyone else who bought in our neighborhood after us is bemoaning the loss of the value of their home. We're just back where we started, and I'm okay with that.

    I needed your perspective today

Admittedly, I didn't read any comments that came before mine. Sue me, I'm lazy.

In GA you can dispute the assessed value…it's kind of a PITA but worth it.. You might be able to do this in CA as well – worth looking into.

    Also: this is RUTHLESS.
