The Nugget

I’d ask on twitter, but I’d like more than 140 characters.
Yesterday lots of you sat in rows or circles and heard some pearls of wisdom.
If you could summarize the main point of your pastors or YOUR OWN sermon yesterday for us all to digest…

What was it all about?

We are exiles. Jesus became THE ultimate exile…

    Why? To bring us home.

As much as I feel like my job doesn’t have a meaning or a purpose and I feel trapped I learned that God’s purpose for work is different then what I have been living. Work is not about success, paying the bills, or identity. You don’t have to work at a church to be in full time ministry. The purpose of my life at work is to show that God is at work in my life.

We’re at the end of a Life’s Healing Choices campaign (week 7 of 8) and this week’s step was Maintaining Momentum: The Growth Choice. It was simple material about “What is Quiet time?” and “How to have a Quiet time?” Main points were:
    1. get alone (solitude is needed, Jesus did it)
    2. get still (settle my mind, focus)
    3. be real (don’t try to tip toe around it..just tell Him..He knows anyway)
    4. be quiet (don’t slam the Bible cover shut and run off..listen..He may speak)
    5. write (make a note of feelings, impressions, prayers..you may need them later)

that’s the skinny..now to put it into daily practice..it all takes time..but He deserves it, doesn’t He?

Paul’s resume was inverted. He boasted in his own weakness, and Christ’s strength (2 Corinthians 11:16-29) The moral of the sermon is that we no loner, based on who Christ is and what he’s done, have to build our spiritual resume. We get Christ’s!

Stop living like an animal! The tragic story of that poor girl who was raped this past week by 10-20 guys right outside her prom while many other looked on and didnt do anything to help. (Actually stopping right now to pray for this little girl and would encourage all of the readers here to do the same). So many people are growing up not being loved in their own home, when they look in the miror they do not see what God has created, they see their flaws. We need to understand that despite the circumstances of our past, where we came from, what has been done to us, that our Maker created us in His image. Our Pastor had a miror on stage to illustrate his point. He looked into the miror and said he saw his big nose, big ears, all of his flaws. Then he smashed the miror and behind the broken glass was the Letters GOD. This is what we need to see instead of all of our perceived ugliness. We have to wonder what has been going on in the homes of these young men who violated this little girl. Do they understand God’s love? Do they understand that they have been made in His image?

God wants to do a new thing in us. He wants to change us, but change is often painful and we resist it. We can’t grab hold of the new thing God wants to do if we continue to hold onto the old thing He once did. New wine won’t go into an old wineskin. We can’t get from the promise to possession without change.

God wants us to see Him!
His desire is to give us revelation and rest.
Revelation is there for us, if we will come and respond, humbly.
Put away our pride, self-reliance, pre-conceived ideas and simply come!

Acts 4:29 & 30 – “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to Your servants to continue to speak Your Word with all boldness, while you stretch out Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”

We should let nothing keep us from doing what God has call His church to do.

when Jesus approached the tomb where his friend lazarus lay, he wept. even though he knew the outcome would be that he would save his friend.

jesus weeps with me in my sorrow. death is a sorrow and an evil that hurts jesus, too. i need to ask myself what my tomb (sin) is, figure out what the stones are in my life to cover up my tomb. then rejoice that jesus is there with me to restore me in spite of all that.

We have to decide ahead of time how we will respond in messy situations. We must trust Him and know He is working our circumstances together for good.

Using the spiritual gifts that you’ve been given.
Not living for your physical self… your selfish desires, but living out your spiritual purpose. Allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you (using your gifts and talents) to make a difference in the lives of others…. from your own family, to your local church, to your community, to the world.

In this world you will have trouble. Some of us created our trouble, and some of us inherited our trouble, but we all will face trouble. The lack of trouble is not the norm for the follower of Christ. It’s actually the opposite…a painfully avoided part of the gospel.

Exodus 32 – Israel does the equivalent of a bride pawning her wedding ring to pay for a hotel room to have an affair.

We can’t judge them though, because we do it too: In times of trial, we hedge our bets and supplement our true God with our old gods, hoping for the best outcome.

This is wickedness and look how it turned out for the Israelites…

We need to repent of our idolatries!

Our Pastor described the vision of our church…and then said if this isn’t your vision, you need to go somewhere else. So…I think we are looking elsewhere.

As part of our “I Want to Live” series – our pastor preached on Matthew 5:13-16. Spoke into being the salt of the earth and light of the world.

Impact and influence – two words that we’d like to see actualized in our lives, but more often than not, they never materialize. Simply put, we want to be people who have impact and influence on the world around us, but the way we live rarely transcends to much more than people who are an echo of those around us, rather than a voice to be heard.

Loved that our pastor used the following quote from D.L. Moody to sum it all up. “The place for the ship is in the sea; but God help the ship if the sea gets into it.”

    Don’t look at the now….
Look back and look ahead. Your now what you use to be but your not what you will be.

Understanding your sin helps understand God
Understanding your sin helps you see what Jesus did

Lust defined as an over desire for something good.
How much stuff are we lusting after?
Having an over desire for something is wrong…sex, food, money, etc….

Great Sunday of learning and reflecting.

We studied Psalm 63. God started breaking up some hard ground of my heart. I’ve been in that wilderness and grown weary from a journey that He has my husband and I on and we’re more at a rest stop than actually traveling down the road (as far as my human eyes can see). Everything last night from the teaching to the worship was exactly where I am at. Though I’ve heard it before and know it He does satisfy us in our wilderness times.

Worship is our natural response to seeing God.
Worship allows us to see ourselves properly.
Worship prepares us to be used by God.

We are to be glory reflectors!
    John 1:14 (The Message)

14The Word became flesh and blood,
    and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
    the one-of-a-kind glory,
    like Father, like Son,
    Generous inside and out,
    true from start to finish.

Andrew provides a great example for us in that he is always bringing people to Jesus. We should follow that example and when we do we shouldn’t presume to pick who’s willing to come with and who isn’t.

In this world “grace always has to be translated”. To give the gospel away we have to translate the love of God into whatever way people will understand it.

  45. John Harvey 3 November 2009 at 7:21 am #

I spoke on the beginning point of Luke 15 where the sinners and tax collectors are listening to Jesus and the Pharisees and teachers of the law are criticizing Jesus. Jesus uses the parables fo the lost sheep and lost coin to illustrate his message. My main point: All of humanity has a common trait: we are lost without Jesus.
