Chicken Legs

I woke up at 615 this morning…got ready…drove my kids 20 miles south to school…drove 40 miles north to Oak Leaf Church…drove 25 miles back south to our pad…picked up the wife and kid and drove 20 miles back south to school again.
I was tanked.
I DID NOT want to play along.
I had literally 45 things I needed to have done yesterday waiting for me.
I had a headache.
My voice is still not 100% and I am leading at New Spring this weekend.
Did I mention the 45 things I needed to have done yesterday?

I sucked it up…
Walked down the hall…
Into the Frogs classroom and Seanna’s smile changed my world.
She started bragging to everyone that her dad can sing and when the kids saw the guitar case…I might as well have been Nick Jonas.
Soon after Sohaila’s 2nd grade class came pouncing in.
There were my 2 girls…looking nervous and excited at what was about to occur.
I taught them about the parts of the guitar.
I sang a few kid songs.
They looked happy.
I was about done when I had the thought…
“WE ARE GOING TO WRITE A SONG!”
I looked for the shy kids.
Me to shy kid #1…”What should the song be about?”
“A chick”, she said.
Me to shy kid #2…”Where does the chick live?”
“In a gate”, shy kid #2 said.
“THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!” screamed not shy kid #1
“Why yes it does. IT makes perfect sense” I assured shy kid #2.
My to shy kid #3…”What does the chick like to do?”
“Ride in her wagon”, she said.
“What color is the wagon?” I asked.
Seanna screamed out…”BLUE”.
She’s not shy.
Me to shy kid #4…”Where is the chick going in the wagon?”
“To the mall”, kid#4 said.
This was getting good.
“What’s the chick gonna buy?” I asked the class…
“CLOTHES!” they all screamed. In unison. Only in East Cobb.
And so I fiddled around with them for a melody for about 60 seconds.
Taught them line by line…
And then it happened.
The song.

The 45 things are still waiting for me…
But my kids are now dreaming of me.

What an awesome post! A reminder to me that in the busyness of life, sometimes the most important thing seems like the most mundane or even the silliest, but in the end proves its worth! Having had the chance to eat dinner with you twice this weekend and watch you live out Jesus to some really important people in my life, I know the source of the smiles on your girls’ faces. Sometimes I lose sight of the fact that though I’ve been called to a life of ministry to others, my biggest mission field exists in my children. Blessings on your family tonight! Thank you for blessing mine- by hanging with my husband, Garrett, and speaking to my too- shy 3-year old. She’s still talking about the dancing song Mr. Carlos taught her!

    • Los 3 February 2010 at 1:00 pm #

WOOHOO!!! Tell her Mr. Carlos says to keep dancing.

A great reminder of a thought that has been going through my head for the past few days. People first. It doesn’t matter what you have to do. You must drop it to be there for someone you care about.

    • Los 3 February 2010 at 1:01 pm #

      People always first…

    • Bill Foote (FooteNotes) 4 February 2010 at 12:13 am #

Amen. I have to remind myself of this all the time. The ministry is about people more than checking off every goal on my list. I am always amazed at Jesus how calmly He embraced being interrupted by people. God help me to be more Christlike.

YES! That. Was. Brilliant. And it’s pretty catchy, probably going to be stuck in my head for a while. “because it’s bluuue” :)

    • Los 3 February 2010 at 1:13 pm #

You are a great dad and an amazing human being. Thank you for investing in others and making the world a better place.

There was a little saying that I used to put on gifts for my kid’s teachers…

“100 years from now it won’t matter what kind of house you lived in or how much money you made…
But the world will be a better place because you were important in the life of a child.”

  24. Becky 3 February 2010 at 7:33 am #

That was so cute! Thank you for sharing!

  25. Laura 3 February 2010 at 7:41 am #

  26. Tia 3 February 2010 at 7:41 am #

As a mom and a teacher, that was a tear “jerker”. Every day holds an adventure that takes just a sacrificed moment to realize that time into a moment that enriches others. What an inspiration. Way to go Dad!

    Dude… I’m becoming a stalker… I’m promise I’m not a scary stalker! :)
Anyways… as a teacher, I found this ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I wish a parent would come into my classroom and teach my kiddos a song. (And although you really don’t need to know this, my whole world has changed this year when I went down to first grade from 5th grade. Little kids are amazing and have taught me SO much!)
This is fabulous and reminds me that kids are wonderful little creatures that have fun doing ANYTHING! :)
Oh, and can I just say that I’ve been completely wrapped up, discombobulated, and grabbed by the heart through your blog? I mean, the stuff that is said, by you, by the other people commenting makes me STOP and think. It is exactly what I need and I am loving it.
    Your #1 fan,
    Kendra
