hey, can i still count as a kid in my mid-twenties? because when i grow up, i want to be either a translator and writer, a professor, or that guy who sits on the end of an nba bench and high fives his teammates during timeouts while making seven figures a year.
I wanted to be a cartoonist – idolized Charles Schultz, Bill Watterson, Gary Larson, and Jim Davis (before my naivete was conquered by my knowledge that his writing was rubbish) as a child.
I always wanted to be a single lady . . . no . . . really. Well, ok, maybe not, BUT I did always want to be a musician/performer, and . . . I have done that been there, now I’m a worship leadin’ husband and dad!
i wanted to be a mascot. like the people who dress up at Disneyland. Or a stuntman. I would love to combine the two occupations. Mickey Mouse does not escape many explosions in my opinion.
Age 3: a mommy
Junior high: a famous actress/singer.
Then a movie director.
High school: a Marine.
Then a missionary.
College: A writer.
Then an editor.
Now at 28, I’m a mommy, a writer, and an editor, and hopefully still gunning for that missionary thing. And drawing on that ooh-rah Marine Corps ethos to get me through natural childbirth and half-marathons.
The main thing I wanted to be was the wife of someone who wasn’t an alcoholic. My father wasn’t a mean man and he loved me very much. But it made everything in life dysfunctional. And for the past 30 years I have been married to the most marvelous man who falls asleep if he has more than one beer.
