A few thoughts.

The fact that there are jelly beans all over the bottle, and the fact that the bubble solution smells like cherry, does not fare well for an unsuspecting toddler.
The most important message on the packaging… “Do not drink bubble solution” is the least noticeable thing on the bottle.
Jelly Belly should stick to making jelly beans so they don’t accidentally poison somebody

The fact that some of our churches have amazing logos and an amazing websites does not mean what is going to happen on Sunday morning is even close to amazing.
The most important message about our churches sometimes is the least visible message to attenders.
If your church is great at making jelly beans…Be amazing at making jelly beans and don’t try to be amazing at making bubbles.

Because you might end up accidentally poisoning somebody.

Identity is one of the biggest issues facing the church today.
I blogged about that last week.

Identity and the connection of generations are the two biggest problems.

Yup. I read that post. Good stuff.

    Great metaphor!

So true… I call those “bait and switch” churches… we give them just enough christian-cultural-Jesus, then poison His message in ‘em. THEN we send ‘em back into the world like a virus.

    it’s so great. Not.

    Agreed, Los.

I’ve said the same thing: Do what you do well, and stick to that.

That said, what every church should be great at, no matter the denomination or doctrine, is preaching Jesus. If you’re not, it might be time to rethink what you do as a church and start with the simple, saving, illuminating, bewitching, bewildering, befuddling, amazing, outstanding, awe-inspiring, resurrective and revelatory message of Christ.

Do one thing and do it well: Preach Jesus.

Even a parrot can preach Jesus my hope is we preach Jesus and live Jesus other wise just get a parrot and teach him how to preach . I love you , your brother in Christ .

Carlos – As Jenny said, you have a gift for bringing a metaphor into a discussion that makes it down to earth for me, and I love you for it.

Keep up the good work. And the God work.

Los, this is great food for thought…

The next blog can be about making things (like your jelly bean bubbles) smell like food (very cherry)… they make it look like a food container and smell like food but if you eat it then it will be harmful to you…

like a lot of things in the world.

I couldn’t agree more. All too often I see churches trying to identify themselves more by what they are not instead of by who God has called them to be. Unfortunately this usually leads poisoning their congregation’s minds against what God is doing with His global church.

I say stick to what is flavorful, delicious and creative and skip watering it down to the point that it blows up and floats away!

Looks can definitely be deceiving sometimes! I first thought I was looking at a Jelly Belly Brand Yogurt. Unfortunately many churches don’t even make a great jelly beans and they think that dressing it up will fix the problem. They need to go back and look at the original recipe. Great post!

    All I’ll say here is….word.

And, very cherry is my most favorite jelly bean of all time. All time, I tell you.

Now I see why “they might not” give you some Jelly Bellies . . .
But I did get an email saying it was on the way. ;)

I LOVE jelly bellies. Seriously, one time I ate so much I got sick. As to the point of the post, I think churches should always pay attention to who God has called them to be. Find the vision God has given you and preach Jesus. You can’t go wrong with that.

Seriously. Too many churches AND Christians try to lure you in only to be disapointed. We can try so hard just to get somebody in the door and forget all about what to do once they are inside. It’s not about how many butts are in the seats, but how many souls are you reaching.

ha! my brother was a graphic designer at the local mega church and i remember the discussions… let’s just say… WOW! i think these guys have the toughest jobs sometimes. i mean, trying to sell something that’s insecure, unsure of its identity, and yet extremely cocky… talk about tough clients.

My hope is that our lives preach all aspects of Christ and live them out as they come out of our mouths and walk them out threw the Holy spirit , Christ helped the poor he feed the people and he preached I hope we preach and express the the heart , the mind , and the hands of Christ to preach one with out living the other is ? 3 – heart , mind , hands . Father ,Son , Holy spirit . I love you , your brother in Christ .

So true… we can package ourselves however we want. We can manage our brand until our brand managers are blue in the face. But unless what we preach on Sunday goes along with our brand… we are lost.

  21. andrew 16 April 2010 at 7:52 am #

  22. Susan B. 16 April 2010 at 9:14 am #

Look’s like “Jelly Bean” may run into a problem! 1 Timothy 6:10 (They don’t really care what happens, as long as the flow of $$$ keeps streaming in…)

  23. Lesly 16 April 2010 at 10:06 am #

Lol…I really like your analogy! :)
