Thomas Merton On Fear
The truth that many people never understand, until it is too late, is that the more you try to avoid suffering the more you suffer. Because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you in proportion to your fear of being hurt.

Amen, I taught on this last night. Many times in life you are going to face problems that are bigger than you are and in that moment you are going to have to determine if your God is bigger. My God is bigger.
This has been sooooo true for me. In my quest for a ‘perfect’ life, the list of things that seem imperfect and inconvenient and uncomfortable gets longer and more trivial.
This is very true! Fear drives most people, and the sooner we learn that taking risks is more fruitful than playing it safe, the better our lives will be.
The pursuit of comfort…our generation’s golden calf and the part of myself I have to kill daily.
Dang, this hit me right between the eyes! Something I need to hear often.
Right on. And also, Thomas Merton is my homie, just sayin. You guys should check out his autobiography, the Seven Storey Mountain. mad good.
word. i need to remind myself of this constantly. thanks.
WORD
The irony for so many in the church is that they are seeking a release from suffering instead of embracing suffering with a purpose, as Christ did.
Great quote! As we spend more time looking out for ourselves and our own interests, we only become more self-centered and no more successful. It’s great to know that Christ said He would be there with us in all suffering great or small and that we don’t ever have to fear.
Something the health and wealth crowd need to hear.
