Me?
Carman.
Carman

And do you think he spelled it Car”man” so people wouldn’t think he was a lady?
How about you?

Wow, I’m looking at the other comments and realizing how young I am, lol!

      • Ally 16 June 2010 at 12:27 am #

you are – and some of these folks would call me a youngun for being in highschool when plus one came out…

but given my love of 80s CCM – I think I count as honorarily older than my age – plus I got started on CCM quite early – I’m constantly bringing up early 90s stuff that no one my age or a little younger seems to remember – but that all my friends a bit older remember…

New Kids On The Block! (As in, back in the day when they were young– not like, last year when they tried to make a comeback.) And I’m pretty sure Carman was the second one I went to.

  6. Jeremy Anderson 15 June 2010 at 10:08 pm #

2nd Chapter of Acts. I bet most people don’t even know who that is! LOL!

    • Ken 15 June 2010 at 10:13 pm #

Jeremy, That was my first concert too! Although, I remember nothing about it except wondering when it would be over. ;)

      • Jeremy Anderson 15 June 2010 at 10:48 pm #

Ken, same here. I remember thinking it was the loudest thing I had ever heard. Imagine that. LOL!

Michael W. Smith–the Go West Young Man tour…wow was that a long time ago!

    • Ally 16 June 2010 at 12:18 am #

oh lucky you! I unfortunately became a Smitty fan right before the Change Your World tour came through (and it was already sold out) so I had to wait until I’ll Lead You Home for my first Smitty concert (6th or 7th grade – but hey I had front row seats about 8 feet away from his keyboard… I was literally jumping up and down in my seat going – “that’s Smitty’s keyboard…oh my goodness that’s Smitty’s keyboard!”)

Seals & Croft, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Souther, Hillman and Furay, and Maria Muldaur. Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ in 1974…

Metallica on the Black Album tour. I got paid to go, free tickets and press passes – and I was only 16 years old! A perk to being the teen music reviewer for the local newspaper!

  10. Tj 15 June 2010 at 10:15 pm #

Carman was mine too. I think David meece may have been the second, followed by Dallas holm. Wow, we old.

    • transitionpete 16 June 2010 at 1:05 pm #

Wow! David Meece… I actually got to chauffeur him around DC in an RV when he was participating in a Luis Palau(?) event.

The first concert I wanted to go to…Carmen :)
My parents drug me to several Southern Gospel concerts, I don’t really remember those, but I do remember Carmen.

  13. Josh 15 June 2010 at 10:21 pm #

My first concert was Hank Williams, Jr. My parents took me. I was 6. Ruptured ear drum. Welcome to North Carolina. :)

  14. Hutch 15 June 2010 at 10:22 pm #

Newsboys, The Shine Tour, when Peter Furler was the drummer and the singer… and it was wicked awesome….

Bryan Adams! when he pulled a girl up on stage with him, my girlfriend and I almost died, we were just teenagers.

Garth Brooks. Twice in one weekend. But I WANTED to see Amy Grant. And now I will – in just a few weeks. But your Carman picture inspired me. Youtubing videos. Lazarus! Come forth!

  20. Tina 15 June 2010 at 10:38 pm #

Amy Grant. Micheal W. Smith. Oh yes. those were the days when you actually understood the words. :)

  21. Brandy 15 June 2010 at 10:38 pm #

Carman was the first person I wanted to see that was featured in a big arena! We had a lot of random folks that came thru our ministry (ex: Phil & Brenda Nicholas….please youtube them. Blessed folks, but slightly stuck in the 1980s). First concert where I paid for a ticket? Fred Hammond. :)

  22. Katie 15 June 2010 at 10:46 pm #

Boyz II Men, Babyface, & Brandy.. all in one concert. ohhhyeah!

  23. CL Jacobsen 15 June 2010 at 10:49 pm #

Stryper, (Strength Through Redemption Yielding Power and Eternal Righteousness). I remember the video.
The Yellow and Black tour in Portland, OR. I also remember the yellow and black Paisley shirt and peg legged jeans that I wore as well.

  24. Amanda Sims 15 June 2010 at 10:52 pm #

Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart, June 13, 1984. Also the day of my first kiss. I’m not sure if there’s a correlation.

  28. Ronda 15 June 2010 at 11:12 pm #

Carman and then Newsong before it changed. My youngest was about 5 at our first Carman concert and he was busy singing and flirting with the pretty girls several rows up. Of course with them being at the least 18 they thought that it was so cute.

  29. Marc Millan 15 June 2010 at 11:18 pm #

Yo, no lie this list of comments has some serious 80′s monsters…that were huge back in the day, gotta give em their props. For me it was The Imperials dude, my first legit concert, no lie. I got to see Michael English too right before his first solo album, this is waaaaaaaay back. wow.

  30. Brad Melton 15 June 2010 at 11:22 pm #

Mom took me to see Elvis in Springfield, MO. I think this was his last tour before he left Graceland for Grace Land. All I remember is a large, sweaty, sideburned man in shades, polyester, and rhinestones.

  31. Chris Nevins 15 June 2010 at 11:35 pm #

YES! 90125 album tour. I was twelve in 1983. I thought I had the coolest dad on the planet. Crazy awesome light show.

  32. Kelly 15 June 2010 at 11:45 pm #

Carmen! A2J tour. Missouri state fair. Epic.

  33. Ally 16 June 2010 at 12:13 am #

Mark Lowry – at a “dinner concert” at a church that was supposedly his first “sell out” – where all these little old ladies who didn’t know who he was yet (he hadn’t been with the Gaither Vocal Band yet long enough at the time to be known to the blue hair crowd apparently) all walked out in the middle of the concert (not cool). I got to meet him and give him the drawings I made him illustrating my two favorite stories of his at the time (what can I say – I was in third grade!) The picture I have is hilarious as much for it capturing Mark’s late 80s/Early 90s mullet as it is for capturing my oh so lovely and of the era permed bangs…

  34. Brad 16 June 2010 at 12:19 am #

D-Mode at the Great Western Forum. I had the seat along the aisle. My friend was clownin’ me cuz some lady (who was large and in charge) danced right beside me in the aisle most of the night.

    Crystal Lewis :) hehe

  36. mandy 16 June 2010 at 12:25 am #

Michael Damian. He picked me out of the crowd & I got to go backstage. Must’ve been the white & orange polka dotted outfit I made. It was hard to NOT notice.

  37. Kyle 16 June 2010 at 12:40 am #

I saw New Kids On The Block in 1987 when I was 7 years old. I just remember my older sister (11) going crazy the entire concert and me tryin to dance to “you got it (the right stuff)”

  38. Amanda Mae 16 June 2010 at 1:24 am #

The Cure. My mom took me when I was 6 because she thought it would be a cool story for em to tell one day.

  39. Mike Raburn 16 June 2010 at 2:05 am #

First concert ever was Servant. Their big hit was “We Are The Light.” They had a ‘laser show’ that consisted of one green laser. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Until I saw Whiteheart on the Hotline tour and Rick Florian, who had just joined, came out covered up on a stretcher singing “Vital Signs” then stood on the gurney and jumped off. That was the coolest thing ever.

Until I went to D&K and got to meet Eddie and Dana (RIP brother, can’t wait to meet you again someday) backstage. That was pretty cool too.

As were Petra, Amy G., The Winan Bros., David Meece, Whitecross, Phil Keaggy, Rez Band, and Mylon & Broken Heart. They were all passionate for Jesus and cool as a cucumber.

But not Carman. He was never as cool as he thought he was. Well maybe a little.

A soldout stadium concert for the Who

if you count while I was in my mom’s belly, it would be carman (apparently I kicked along with the beat…explains my love of music huh?)

    if not….Garth Brooks

  45. Dale Schaeffer 16 June 2010 at 9:08 am #

This explains so much. If I remember correctly you had that same hairdo back in college. ;)

    It’s all coming together now.

  46. Dale Schaeffer 16 June 2010 at 9:12 am #

Oh yeah and mine was Aerosmith in Chicago with a terrible opener in Jackyl.

  47. Leslie 16 June 2010 at 9:12 am #

Can’t remember if it was Petra first or the Journey/Bryan Adams concert. Thanks for these memories! Loved Mylon and Carman at Atlanta Fest when it was at the race track. Carman sang as the storms cleared and a rainbow appeared. Amazing!

The James Gang featuring Joe Walsh..

  49. Teresa 16 June 2010 at 9:33 am #

Alabama, yep, the country group back in their prime in the early 80s. First Christian Concert was multiple concerts when I attended Creation Festival in 1991! Petra closed out that week and that was AWESOME. There were over 30,000 people there that night and NOW the festival brings in about 100,000! It’s amazing to have that many people worshipping God at one time! Out in the middle God’s creation. :) I’m excited to be going there in just a few more short days!

I’m pretty sure mine was Ray Boltz. My mom and older sister were going and I thought “I wanna go to a concert! I hear thety are a lot of fun!”.

I had heard maybe 2 Boltz songs and didn’t realize until I was there that this would not be a “fun” concert…

First concert I purchased the ticket for: Steven Curtis Chapman. Yes, it was “fun”.

  53. AnnieLaurie 16 June 2010 at 9:53 am #

  58. Annie 16 June 2010 at 11:14 am #

Yes and Ten Years After. I went with friends in high school. So excited, even though I had no idea who the bands were. It was miserable. I didn’t care for the music, and people were crazy.

  59. matt bortmess 16 June 2010 at 11:18 am #

    1977 – I was 7 years old.
Donnie & Marie at the State Fair!

Ok, I know I am going to win the “You saw WHO??” or “NO Way!” award for today, (or “Man, how old ARE you?”), but I saw the group Sha Na Na at the Hollywood Bowl. Does ANYONE remember them? They were like a do wop 50′s version of the Village People. They even had their own show on TV for a little bit.

    Anyone??

  61. David U 16 June 2010 at 12:23 pm #

Ted Nugent/Scorpions/Def Leppard. Reunion Arena August 1979. I’ll never forget my dad with cigarette butts stuck in his ears to muffle the sound, while reading the newspaper to the light of a bic..wearing a suit! Classic. Sweaty Teddy came singing out on a rope in a loin cloth! HAHA!
