We Vandalized Some Cadillacs

Just west of Amarillo, TX there are a number of Cadillacs buried nose down in the dirt.
Right off the highway.
When I was a kid and we drove across country EVERY summer and passed these perpendicular coaches we would NEVER stop.
There was really no way to get to them back in the 80′s.
But in the late 90′s a contractor moved them a few miles further west and closer to the frontage road where people could go visit and paint them to their hearts content…
So we went at it this afternoon…
My kids were in the car for 12 hours today…
Not one meltdown…
And they are gorgeous like their mother…
How the crap did I pull this off?
What is that fun and random place you always will remember from your summer vacations?
Los

You know, Jud and I are both from Amarillo and have vandalized those caddys many, many times. Looks like you had fun. Glad you stopped and got those great pictures!
THANKS LORI!!!!!
God’s grace! Haha.
You have a gorgeous family Los!
You didn’t pull it off, Carlos! (Catherine is correct.)
Also, I think you’ve reached the #1 spot on my list of favorite photographers. Daley Hake can kiss it!
You have on a Newspring t-shirt. THAT’S AWESOME.
I ? MY CHURCH!!!
Losiah looks like he’s spotted a rattle snake in the family photo.
I’m so glad you pointed this out, or I would have missed it!
Great pictures, Carlos! What a fun memory for your family.
Hey what is the effect you put on the pics to make them look faded?
My family didn’t take summer vacations, but I’ve since traveled extensively and I’d say the alligator farm in Colorado wins
(they offered wrestling classes there too, but my friend & I missed our appointment due to a flat tire but they still let us capture a few gators and move them to another part of the farm – no lie).
The place I remember wanting to see is Zion. I hear it is a great place and as a kid we would talk about seeing it but never have. Maybe it is time my family goes. Once Jeremiah is a lil older.
Hey Carlos when are you coming back to riverside. We miss you.
Absolutely worth the trip!
beautiful family pictures Los. Place I remember most from my family vacations… hmm. The car. We used to do a lot of road trips when I was younger. My sister and I would play and fight and sing and yell and all that good stuff from the back seat.
we would go to hershey park, pa (which, in itself, is kinda random) every year, and there was a hardees we’d always stop at.
The real question is why you were so prepared with a can on sparkly spraypaint in your car
summer 1976, family trip across the country starting in New Hampshire…on the way back through the Painted Desert in New Mexico….pop up camper setup, torrential rain and wind almost blow it over…so dad took us to a Mexican restaurant…which was a huge deal back then since we rarely ever went to a restaurant.
What an adventure & such beautiful photos to remember it with!
Cheers to self-employment!!!
Can’t beat that natural light, either.
Love the pictures…and the story….
These photos are gorgeous!!! I hope you have a safe and peaceful rest of your journey!
We visit Doug’s family just off the Mississippi River. Happened to be crossing over the river just as a barge was approaching lock and dam near the power plant. Pulled off and went to observation “deck”(top of a utility shed) to show kids how they float the barge in, raise the water level and pass it through. Not a cloud in the sky except directly above where we were standing. Poured the entire time the barge was moving through the locks. No umbrellas or rain gear. No cover. Just stood in the rain without one complaint from the kids who were 7, 6, and 4 at the time. Talk about a miracle. Totally random and non-spectacular and remembered every time we cross that bridge.
Driving through the southwest, my dad would always take the scenic route because the countryside was SOO different from where we lived in rural Iowa. One trip, we got lost on a little gravel road that turned into a dead end, but we found a small little canyon on the side of the road that we explored for some time. It had hydrangea-like flowers that were dried and dusted over, growing along the top of the crevice. My mom picked some and brought them home. I love that my dad always took the scenic route.
Keep making HIM famous bra…. AC
we stopped at http://www.carhenge.com/ in NB. once.
we climbed all over it i remember it being a fun little stop.
it’s in the middle of NO WHERE Nebraska!
Yep, our names are somewhere on there too. My hubs and Lori Wilhite grew up together. Good times in that there city. Good times. (however, the walk out to those cars is further than it looks
We went through Amarillo TWICE this summer on our way to and from Yellowstone and I didn’t event know about this until we got home!!! These pictures are amazing as usual and I home the family pic is going up somewhere!
This year was still one of the best trips we have ever taken though. We took a “little detour” and ended up driving through Dead Indian Pass and Wind River Canyon in Wyoming…. GORGEOUS!!!!!!!
Rad.
These kinds of posts inspire me to make the most of every moment.
Those are awesome! Great pix!
Oh, and we will be driving to New Mexico next year… I think we’re going to have to stop there!
Walldrug.
Those pics are amazing! Time to start a photography business, I think…
I LOVE THIS!!! They will always remember this kind of stuff when they grow up!!
As a child, the most random vacation stop was at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. The exterior is covered in murals made from kernels of corn, and they tear them down and put up new scenes every year.
As an adult, one of the most random places I’ve been is Hartman’s Rock Garden in Springfield, OH. Ben Hartman decided to build all sorts of replicas and monuments in his yard out of rocks during the great depression, and it is still maintained by his grandchildren.
Daniel and Rebecca Boones gravesite outside of St, Lious MO., When we arrived, there was a sign telling us that they had been moved back to KY.
I want to know if you went to BIG TEXAN and do some violence on that 72-oz steak!
Incredible pictures that will flash you back to some great memories!
What a great time! Those pictures are incredible–the family one should definitely be framed. The kids will remember that day forever.
We liked to go different places in the summers when I was growing up. But there was one thing we could always count on: singing in the car! It was before the days of movies in the car, and we had to entertain ourselves. Our family favorites were “Down by the Bay”, “Diarrhea”, and “Jenny, I Got Your Number”. Good times.
The “mandatory fun” vacation out west my folks took me on so we could see the beauty of it. It drove me crazy til I was about to nut-up, but looking back, it was the most memorable trip ever
Last two family vacations we ended up under and overpass on the interstate in Georgia. That has becoem our family vacation tradition.
