What Songs Are Working In Your Churches RIGHT NOW?

Posted on 31. Aug, 2010 by loswhit in Music

So as I am helping craft the worship experiences at Catalyst with Brad and team, I think it’s important that we include songs in the worship sets that are currently connecting with your churches…
What songs are the songs that your people sing the loudest to?
What songs are connecting right now?
Not your favorite song…but THEIR favorite songs…

Talk to me…

here’s a new song we’ve introduced into our regular line up… it’s an old set of lyrics (originally by Samuel Wolcott years ago!) but i updated it with a new chorus, and slid the words around in the
    verses to make them fit.

it seems to be well accepted, and easy enough to sing.

here’s a link to the song if you want to check it out: http://soundcloud.com/martymikles/christ-for-the-world

  25. Sloan 31 August 2010 at 11:32 am #

“The Stand” by Hillsong. I love to be a part of and see how that song has made people feel deeply emotionally connected to God during worship. It’s definitely done the same for me.

“How He Loves” by JMM or David Crowder are great. I like the DC*B arrangement, but I sing “sloppy wet kiss” whenever I play it.

Also, I used to lead worship at church camps (and still do sometimes), so “Undignified”, “Make A Joyful Noise”, and “Every Move I Make” by David Crowder will always be favorites of mine.

As a whole, I feel our church worship is stale, even after a stellar message on worship last Sunday. There are 0 songs our church is connecting with on a regular basis. Maybe its just me, but Im kinda of tired of all church bands, well mostly all church bands, being cover bands. I wish there was more creativity coming from me as well as others who lead our church. Covering other peoples songs get old after a while. Hillsong has a monopoly on creative worship right now, so I feel that alot of songs are just spin offs of their stuff. I am thankful for Gungor who at least is doing something different in the worship seen, its catchy and very unique and creative…. too bad we don’t do his stuff, yet. Summary: my church, as well as me, are stale in our worship.

    • Tina 2 September 2010 at 11:42 pm #

As a worship leader I feel the same way. I feel trapped in a musical box created by someone else. I’d love to hear thoughts on how to get out of the rut. But time never seems to be on my side. I feel I have no time to “create” a new sound.

Worship has always been a rough spot for me. I’ve never been moved to worship in person, which is strange because I definitely worship when I’m at home and alone. Of course, the music has something to do with it, and unfortunately I have not been able to find a church whose worship time is as valuable to me as the message time. But that’s okay. Suffice it to say, Tomlin’s How Great is Our God is the only song that has moved me in public (and private) in recent history.

  43. Abby 31 August 2010 at 1:28 pm #

    Psalm 62–Aaron Keyes/Stuart Townsend
Healing is in Your Hands–Christy Nockels
We also have several talented song writers in our church family so we sing some of their stuff too.

Desert Song -Hillsong United (I think)
More Than A Friend – Jeremy Riddle

Faithful – Rend Collective Experiment, Ft. David Crowder
In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross – Sojourn
    Micah 6:8 – Charlie Hall
Let our Faith be not alone – Robbie Seay band, I think.

Good songs especially the ones by Rend Collective Experiments.

    • Joel 31 August 2010 at 2:09 pm #

Anything by Sojourn pretty much is awesome too. FYI

    • Antonio Delgado 1 November 2010 at 4:00 pm #

I wanted to see if you might be willing to share your chord charts for “Thine be the glory” and “Faithful” by the Rend Collective Experiment?

      Any help would be great!

  47. ...adam 31 August 2010 at 2:10 pm #

I know (and the comments demonstrate) that Hillsong is killing it right now. But we all know that. We knew that. I guess as for songs that are doing well, I’d love Catalyst to be leading the way in new songs, arrangements, structure, etc. I appreciate creating space for this list because it definitely informs, but there aren’t many surprises either. My vote would be to steer clear of Hillsong. We get it. They are really good at what they do. Let’s have catalyst be more of a shout out to something different, to challenge us on our own creativity and how we pick songs. That being said…

Gungor’s songs are off the chart right now and a friend and I were messing around with the old school Thy Word putting it to a new arrangement that people really responded to.

  48. Alan 31 August 2010 at 2:11 pm #

    Here’s a different one:

Speak O Lord by Keith and Kristyn Getty

Sang it last Sunday and couldn’t hear the team over the congregation!

    • Alan 31 August 2010 at 2:15 pm #

Oh, another song that always gets an enthusiastic response is Hallelujah, We Will Sing by Tommy Walker. You have to deliberately teach the chorus parts the first Sunday you sing it, but every Sunday after has been high energy and enthusiastic singing.

How Deep The Father’s Love – Stuart Townend
    God You Reign – Brewster
    Mighty To Save – Hillsong
You Never Let Go – Redman

Also, just introduced Forever Reign – Hillsong. Really worked.

In the right moment, Doerksen’s ‘Holy God’ can be a powerful song as well.

    Love Like Fire – Hillsong

    Hey Carlos & Co.

Checkout a new song “Our God Is King” written by Matt Giles based on Ephesians 3, and used at a regional New Frontiers conference in South West England, UK.

    http://www.mattgilesmusic.com/MGm/songs.html

There’s audio, lyrics and chords here.

Matt’s written several other songs following a series of teaching on Ephesians this year. There’s rich pickings in the Word of God!

I run FOH, so I get to hear and see the response…

    Let Me Sing – Tomlin

    Glorious One – Steve Fee

    Glory to God – Fee

Our God – Tomlin – hasn’t been done yet for adults, but was great for the big youth event. Looking forward to mixing it for adult worship.

Today is the Day – Lincoln Brewster – an older one that works nearly every time

We also added a few originals that are off to a great start.

I’m breaking the rules. I’m submitting my favorite song, because the people at my church don’t sing loud to any songs. Ever. But that’s another blog post altogether, isn’t it?

Here’s one the one that gets me every time:

Just to clarify, you sing Kiss Your Feet on Sunday Mornings at your church? If you do…that’s awesome. I think some people would clock out on the first two lines.

      • Steve 2 September 2010 at 12:30 am #

I love that song, except I clock out when he says “I found a way to appease you”… just doesn’t square with my soteriology.

It’s so weird that there is 75 comments, most all have listed the same songs by the same artist. All very white, very mainstream Coffee shop or Rock sounding songs/groups. Israel being the only exception and he’s only on here one time. Do any people that go to churches that play R&B or soulful music read this blog?

Have to Believe by Rita Springer
    Still Standing by Israel Houghton
    Glorious by Martha Manesse
I Really Love You by Norman Hutchinson
Whisper His Name by Jonathan Stockstill

    • Eric 1 September 2010 at 7:54 am #

I do! The interesting thing about my church is that we remix a lot of the CCM songs to give them more of an R&B feel. I’m surprised there’s no Fred Hammond on the list

I love posts about worship songs ’cause the comments are always a goldmine of song recommendations. :)

This Is Our God – Hillsong
    Stronger – Hillsong
You Are Good – Israel Houghton

Well, not to be redundant (although I suppose that’s part of the point), but I would say:

    Our God – Tomlin
You Alone Can Rescue – Redman
We Cry Out – Brian and Jenn Johnson/Kim Walker/Jesus Culture
    Deliverer – Vicky Beeching
We Will Worship You – Carlos Whittaker (ever heard of him?)
How He Loves – JMM/Crowder/Everyone in the world
    Obsession – Delirious/Chris Quilala/Jesus Culture
Faithful God – Zach Neese/Gateway Church

yeah, there are a lot of other ones.

amazing grace (my chains are gone) – tomlin

  76. Tim 31 August 2010 at 6:01 pm #

Our congregation responds to a lot of our originals.
In terms of the covers we do, they love Sojourn “In the Shadow of the Glorious Cross” and “Only Your Blood is Enough”.
And the DC*B arrangement of JMM’s “How He Loves” with the “Sloppy Wet kiss” line is always powerful.

I’m not a worship leader and I don’t go to a church that really does a contemporary service, but that’s all I listen to at home and Glenn Packiam’s God Has Come to Save and Everylasting God by New Life Worship are two I constantly go back to.

  78. Shelley 31 August 2010 at 7:15 pm #

“We Are An Ark” – Dave Fitzgerald (feat. Jenn Johnson)

“My Soul Sings” – Bethel Live

“Here is Love” – Bethel Live

“Dance with Me” – Jesus Culture (Consumed)

The stuff coming out of Bethel/Jesus Culture and all that crew is amazing. Such a touch from heaven.

I’ve been feeling lately like we’re singing a lot of the same songs, but I’m OK with that for now because our worship teams have been killing it. Our paster nailed it when he said we had a sick worship set on Sunday (then he asked if that was still a cool way to describe it, lol).

Two of the most frequent are “We Shine” by Fee and “Tear Down The Walls” by Hillsong United.

I get so excited when the worship pastor is at our campus because he brings his sweet DJ setup. He even rocked the keytar this week.

We do a lot of Todd Wright. (hee hee)

  81. RTB 31 August 2010 at 9:00 pm #

The Anthem- Planetshakers (done in a more modern way)

    Holding Nothing Back- Melissa How

You wont Relent/All Consuming Fire-misty edwards

  82. Lisa 31 August 2010 at 9:31 pm #

Pretty much anything by jesus Culture, recent Hillsong, or JM McMillan. But, just this weekend, we were feeling like we’ve made everything kind of heavy & artsy, & could use a few up-tempo tunes to bring in a little balance.

    • Lisa 31 August 2010 at 9:32 pm #

      That should be Jesus Culture…sorry.

  83. Clyde Parker 31 August 2010 at 10:08 pm #

Last Sunday we had a Worship service only and it was an awesome time.
    Hosanna-Paul Baloche
    Blessed be your Name
    Your Grace is Enough
    Bless the Lord-Among Thorns
    Heaven Came Down-Marie Barnett
    Come thou Fount
    Only You-Crowder
    Not to Us-Tomlin
FYI I run a small group Called Friday Nites Made for Worship a kind of Worship Bootcamp. We practiced a song called “Rain it Down” by Carlos Whittaker. It is quite a hit.

  84. Kali 31 August 2010 at 11:16 pm #

My church back home it’s “Our God” by Chris Tomlin, “Freedom” by Eddie James, and “Revelation Song” are pretty popular.

Here – I go to Hillsong – and really everything works. We mostly do stuff off of Faith + Hope + Love, Beautiful Exchange, or new stuff.

  85. Joni Ruhs 1 September 2010 at 9:59 am #

Our congregation generally gets crazy participating in the music but here are some where we can hear them singing louder than the band and that I didn’t see mentioned yet:
    Overcome – Desperation Band
Jesus Paid It All – Passion “Everything Glorious” (especially the added chorus–could sing that all day)
I Am Free mix with Where The Strets Have No Name back into I Am Free
Happy Day (Fee) mix with chorus of “I Got A Feelin’” by Black Eyed Peas back into Happy Day (Taylor Phelan leads this one thru the roof)
    Take It All – Hillsong
    You’ll Come – Hillsong
    You Deserve – Hillsong

Most of them have already been mentioned…
Our God, How He loves, anything by Hillsong!

But lately our church has really taken a liking to ‘RUN’ by Hillsong. Great opening or ending song!

  96. Luke W. 1 September 2010 at 11:59 am #

Mighty to Save has worked since it came out… such a powerful song even though it is a little dated.

How He Loves leads our people to full out worship every time. God has worked through John Mark and this song.

We Will Worship You has entered our set lists and we all love it. I like that it is not your typical worship song and it sends us into complete worship as well.

  97. Sam Leyde 1 September 2010 at 11:59 am #

The Beauty of the Cross by Casey Parnell and Corey Parnell.(Fee did a version of it on a Catalyst Music Project CD)
    You’re Beautiful by Phil Wickham
YOur Love Never Fails by Jesus Culture

Before The Throne Of God Above – SovGrace
    In Christ Alone –

Your Grace is Enough – Tomlin
Give Us Clean Hands – Hall
    Revelation Song – Riddle

and the typical How Great is Our God/How Great thou Art combo
Also some hymns we jazz up ourselves: At Calvary, Since I Have Been Redeemed, etc.
Some originals too: I Want to Say Thank You, My God is Able

  100. Gary Townsend 1 September 2010 at 12:38 pm #

oh yeah, We Will Remember – Walker; is a crowd favorite

  101. Rebecca 1 September 2010 at 3:16 pm #

Maybe I’ve missed it, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone list Jonathan Stockstill or Daniel Bashta here – both amazing worship leaders and fantastic song writers.

Jonathan Stockstill – You Reign, Fahter You’re Glorious, Worthy, Open up The Sky, etc.

Daniel Bashta – Like a Lion (covered by David Crowder), Heaven

also, Fred Hammond will always be the man – No weapon by him kills it every time at our church.

Freedom – Eddie James gets em jumpin every time
No Other Name – Freddy Rodriguez

*There’s a lot more out there then Hillsong, though our church loves most of their songs too. Love having this list to get ideas from!

  104. Jay 2 September 2010 at 10:14 am #

I see a lot of references here to Chris Tomlin’s ‘Our God.’

That would be the one I would choose as well.

  105. Jon Lloyd 2 September 2010 at 2:37 pm #

The Eternal One. An original tune, that our church belts out.

  106. Patrick 2 September 2010 at 4:45 pm #

-Change Our Hearts – Joshua Tullis

  107. Heather Miller 2 September 2010 at 11:15 pm #

I’ve been reintroducing songs from Redman’s “Father’s Song” record. Lots of Spirit and truth in those songs, and our people are really connecting with them.
