Benjamin Alan Boles
Unfortunately my Anglo-Saxon background doesn’t make for a cool pronunciation of my Hebrew, Scottish, English name.
Andrea JoyLynne Hardin-Tillson Phifer
Joy: My grandma’s middle name.
Hardin: My mom’s maiden name.
Tillson: My dad’s last name.
Phifer: My married name.
I hated having such a long name growing up. When my now husband proposed I told him he was lucky he had such a short last name or I would have had to say ‘no’. =)
Maxwell Louis Pollack
First name is English. Middle name is French. I am neither. Last name is Russian, which I am a quarter. Totally doesn’t account for my Puerto Rican, Irish, and German heritage, but nonetheless I like it
I was named after my grandfather, my mom’s dad. And my middle name, Elizabeth, is my great grandmother’s name on my dad’s side. I might be the name of a poisonous vine but its so much more than that:)
Mohan Pramod Karulkar.
Mohan means snake charmer, so that’s self-explanatory (i.e. awesome)
Pramod is my dad’s name
Karulkar is derived from the village of Karul, where my family came from many moons ago, in India.
Best name ever. i love it.
Really? Thanks
although I didn’t have much say in it.
Michelle Yvette Palmer
They liked Michelle, my mom’s name is Yvette.
My nickname – Meppy. My initials M E (phonetically at least) P. When my friend John figured this out, he yelled “MEP! WE COULD CALL YA MEPPY!!!” And they have ever since.
does it even count that you have 4 last names up there?
NO ONE uses 4 last names… in the DR we use two
Adriana Féliz Almonte Peña Severino (thought i’d might do 4 as well)
Name comes from a latin american soap opera and last names are all hispanic.
Well my name is Sarah Ann Legaspi, Thomas was my maiden name. I was named after Sarah from the Bible, my mom liked her a lot apparently. My name means princess and that is my favorite part about my name! Fun fact for you Carlos, Jaime’s middle name is also Enrique.
Glad to know I’m not the only one from DR here
Wow…mine sounds almost normal compared to that.
Heather Elizabeth Villalta
My middle name is my mom’s name and my last name is Spanish andpronounced “Ve-all-ta”
Wow, that’s your full name Carlos?
Mine is Connor Thomas John McCullough
As far as I know my ancestors were Scottish, so the Connor is the Scottish spelling rather than Irish
Phillip Mark Yates Gibb
Greek version: Philip means lover of horses
Whatever.
I get more excited when something about Philip is read from the bible, ha ha h.
Mark – my uncle’s name
Yates – my Mom’s Mom’s Maiden name
Gibb – Scottish from the clan Buchanan, that I am proud of. Funny I married a girl whose gran was a pure Scott.
ha ha ha
Andrew Kiff. That’s it. Three whole syllables. I have more letters after my name than in it. Thank you, lazy parents. I feel so inadequate compared to all you multi-named people. ;-( My wife also has no middle name. We’ve broken the cycle of deprivation though and given both our kids a middle name.
As far as I can find out the surname is of German origin but probably came over here back in the middle ages. From what I can trace, my branch of the family has been in England long before the USA existed. I did find evidence of a namesake who emigrated to America and then fought on the winning side in the revolution. Traitor.
Nathan Samuel Harris
My dad’s name is Samuel, and he wanted that to be my middle name. My mom liked Nathaniel for a first name, but since Nathaniel Samuel rhymes, she cropped it down to Nathan ;o)
my name is Santos Misael Samayoa, you killed my father prepare to die, haha jk!! (princess bride refrence)
So my name is so holy seriously Santos means Saint/holy it was my grandfathers name given to me just weeks before he passed away.
Misael is spanish for Mishael, you know Shadrach, Meshac, and Abed-Nego, well i’m Meshac (my mom loves that story so she named me that)
and Samayoa is my last name, oh and no i’m not samoan!! i’m Guatemalan/Salvadorean
So all in all i had a hard time spelling and pronouncing my own name as a young kid, so i shortened it to “Santz” or “Chato”
Joel
It means “Jehova is the Lord”.
I have it because it’s in the Bible. My parents wanted a Biblical name for me and my mom won with her choice.
My dad wanted to name me Booz
(
David John Goodwin
My family on both sides has been in Australia since the 1820s, but before that was English (mum) & English/Danish (dad).
It’s the exact same name as my grandfather, even though I’m not named after him…apparently. Visiting his grave is always kinda weird
I am named for both of my grandmothers. My mother wanted to name me Cindy and my father said that we should name me after his mother, Lucinda, and call me Cindy as a nickname. So my mother said, if we name her after your mother, we have to name her after my mother too. So I got Lucinda Marjorie. The kicker is that after my father’s mother passed away, we discovered that she pretty much lied about her name. She told everyone Lucinda but it was actually Lula. I guess she didn’t like it and decided to rename herself.
All those biblical names are fine and dandy, but my first name is Jamie…and I was named after the BIONIC WOMAN. Top that, y’all!
Yeah, you pretty much win.
Well, Matthew is a Biblical name, but my first name is Miles, and that’s a family name. I’m the fifth to have it. But I’m not Miles Appling V, because we all had different middle names.
I was born in a Catholic hospital, I was the 3rd of 5 boys and by all accounts was supposed to be a girl. So, when I appeared there was no name decided for me, My father was out of town, my Mother was wiped out , so the nuns gave me my name, a very Catholic name for a very non-catholic family. It was the name of the Bishop in the area. By the time my parents figured it out it was too late to change it..
Scott Joseph Hobbs
Scott – My folks liked it. Means “man from Scotland”, I’m not.
Joseph – My mom’s middle name is Jo, I have a great Uncle Joe. Means “God will add”
Hobbs – Poor English. The wealthy English had the “e” in there (Hobbes)LOL.
Elizabeth Eun Hea Lee
Elizabeth means “blessed one,” and I think it was a big trend for Korean immigrants to name most of their kids with names from the Bible (which is tougher on girls, I reckon!)…
Eun Hea is Korean for “grace” (and I am THANKFUL my Momma refused to call me Grace in English too)
Lee- Korean!
Jonathan Lawrence Vick
My first name is, obviously, from the Bible. It means gift of the Lord or gift from the Lord. Mom and Dad really liked it. My middle name is my Grandmother’s maiden name. My last name means victory or victorious and is of English origin. I like to think I am descended from a powerful general, but more likely just some guy that hung around the pub and always won at darts or something.
Larissa Gabrielle Vogelaar
Larissa – Named after one of the two Russian sister’s my parents heard about. They were thrown into jail during communism for printing bibles.
Gabrielle – Named after the angel Gabriel, I think in the hopes that I would be somewhat “angelic.”
Vogelaar – Means bird catcher, and is Dutch. Havnet caught any birds… or much else for that matter.:-)
Hayley Kay Hay
People tried to dissuade me from dropping my last name when I got married (Gibson), but I thought this name was too great to pass up!
Annalise Marie Porter.
Anne Frank’s full name was Annaleise Marie Frank.
My mom didn’t know this until I was about 5.
Cool coincidence, much?
Marni Michel–Marnie is an old Alfred Hitchcock movie from the 1960′s. I love watching it and hearing Sean Connery say my name. Sigh. My middle name is from The Beatles song.
I named my oldest daughter Lindsay Taylor. Lindsay after Lindsay Wagner because I heart the Bionic Woman and Taylor for James Taylor.
My youngest is named Peyton Nicole. Peyton for Peyton Manning (woo hoo!) and Nicole…because her dad likes the name
Joshua Owen Meyer
Joshua:
“Jehovah is generous, Jehovah saves”
Owen:
“Young warrior”
Meyer:
“Shining”
Now to live in that prophesy!!!
T Jay Carter.
My dad’s parents named all of their kids with TJC initials.
Teresa Jane Carter, Terry James Carter, Ted John Carter and Tommy Joe Carter.
My parents decided to throw me into the mix, even though they didn’t with my brothers. One letter for a first name? Yup. My dad is a golf course superintendent and loves golf, but thought Tee was dumb. Or so I’m told.
My wife and I are continuing the “Carter Tradition” with our two boys, Terrick Jaymes Carter and Tacen Joel Carter.
It’s not very deep, but we like it!
My wife is half Korean. Her middle name is Ók, which means “jewel.” I LOVE that.
http:// jonwellman.wordpress.com – Not a Camouflaged Soul
David is a hebrew name, meaning “Beloved”.
The Lord has used this name to speak to me in monumental ways.
“Be-” is a prefix that, when applied to an adjective (like “loved” in this context), means “Cause to be”.
Taking that into account, “Beloved” to me means that the Lord caused me to be loved by Him. He named me His beloved before I was ever born, before I ever came to know Him. He called me His beloved in the depths of my sin and adultery against Him.
Truly, “He demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
My name is David, and I am beloved by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Glory to God forever.
Katherine Joyce Dishman
For years I thought Katherine was a bible name. Um, there’s no Katherine in the bible. I was actually named after a character in the book Rebecca. And not even the main character–that name went to my sister. How suck is that? I have no idea where Joyce came from, but I dropped it in favor of Dishman as my legal middle name when I got married.
My parents chose the name Marcus because it was popular at the time, and they liked it. They didn’t really know its meaning; they liked how it sounded. My middle name is my dad’s first name. No big story there, but God revealed His touch on my life recently when He revealed some meanings to me:
Marcus
“One who gleams”
A popular pre-Christian baptismal name, Marcus is a development of the word “mar”, meaning to gleam – which means to shine brightly, like a star or light.
Lawrence
“Crowned with laurel”
In ancient times, wreaths were awarded to victors in competitions, martial contests and poetic meets.
MY NAME IS A CALLING: I am called to shine. I am called to victory.
Esther Alice Amarendran Duttweiler
Esther: after the queen in the Bible
Alice: after my grandmother on my dad’s side
Amarendran: This is the interesting one. In India, people sort of make up their own last names or take their father’s first name as their last name (as you can imagine, it makes tracing your family tree a real pain). My dad chose the last name Amarendran, which means “executive ambitions” (although I’m not sure that’s why he picked it). When he moved to the US, he took on the “American” way of naming, so that’s how I got it.
Duttweiler: my husband’s last name, probably originally spelled Detweiler, which is the name of a village in either Switzerland or France
Hi. I’m Carlos.
Carlos was my fathers brothers name. He died at birth. So my father never knew him.
Caitlin Elizabeth Collier
Caitlin- the Gaelic (Irish) form of my mother’s name, Kathryn (who, incidentally is named Janis Kathryn after her mother Janis… there’s a trend in the family)
Elizabeth- I was supposed to be a boy, so my mom didn’t have a middle name picked out. My aunt told her Elizabeth went with everything, so I’m stuck with it. So is my aunt’s daughter…
Collier- it’s either Irish or English, and it means “Coal Miner”.
Cool!
Graham Edward Cullen Brenna
Graham – because my parents liked it.
Edward – because my mom’s dad’s name was Edward.
Cullen – because my dad also wanted to pick a middle name and that’s what he chose… no idea why.
Brenna – because my when my mom and dad got married they didn’t want to take my dad’s family name (Bespole) so they chose Brenna… also a girl’s first name.
Your name is has Edward Cullen in it? Have Twilight fans been haranguing you?
My name: Rebecca Ann Bernier
My dad wanted to name me Rebecca which has several meanings but the one I love the most is: captivating
Ann is my grandmother’s middle name.
Bernier is French.
“Stretch” because I’m being pulled to my limit
“Mark” because I’m part male
“Mama” because “Her Highness Superior” was too long
Jacob Marshall Anderson
Jacob- I was actually named after the John Wayne movie “Big Jake” They wanted to give me the full name though not just Jake.
Marshall- Came from my Great Grandfathers middle name & my Dad’s middle name.
Anderson- Comes from Scotland if you want to go back that far. Most of my ancestors were here in the US before the revolutionary war. Closest immigrants I have in my ancestry is Dutch in the 1840′s. I do have some American Indian in me, but they didn’t immigrate.
D Kamiron Cross.
D = yes. just one lonely, little letter. my dad says it is so I would have somewhere to start if I decided to change it….
Kamiron = crooked nose… crooked freaking nose.
Cross = the universal symbol for the most horrifying death possible….
Nice, huh?
Kelly Patrick Seto
I’m Irish and Chinese. And a girl.
Edward Malachi Elguera
Edward – Dad’s name
Malachi – from the Bible. Mean’s “God’s messenger”, pretty rad.
Elguera – Mexican, ’cause my dad is Mexican.
Kristel Fatima Acevedo
(and before I was married it was Kristel Fatima Lopez Rodriguez Roman Medina Cuadra…haha… We hispanics are so crazy with our super long names.)
Kristel – It’s a shorter version of my mom’s name: Kristabel.
Fatima – my family is Catholic (though I am not anymore) and they named me after the Virgin of Fatima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Fátima) because I was conceived in Lisbon, Portugal (TMI?)
Acevedo – it’s my husband’s last name.
Christina Coline – Christina cause they had become Christian’s 4 year before I was born.. Coline cause I was named after Father Colin who led my mom to Christ…
Mine is Tanya Izadora Llopis Lagandaon Hayes
The addition of Hayes because of marriage.
Tanya – Fairy Queen
Izadora – Gift of the Moon
Llopis – Wolf (mom’s maiden name)
Lagandaon – The beautiful one
Hayes – Hedged Area
My name was long when I lived in Manila, then it got really short when I moved to Seattle and when I got married. I only get to use half of my name now. haha!
tracy elizabeth callison kase.
b/c my mom wouldn’t let my dad name me allison callison.
Cynthia Joye Jones Hendrix
In 1964, my mom was in the 4th grade and got her first experience with integration, and she had 1 black girl in her class. Her name was Cynthia, they became best friends until my mom and her family moved. Joye is my mom’s mom’s maiden name (you know Wade Joye from Elevation, yeah, a cousin). My dad was a Jones and I married a Hendrix (no relation to Jimi). I’ve only been officially called by my full name once in my life (so far) and that was when I graduated from Pharmacy school (my mom opposed to me leaving out my maiden name).
A side note, when I was in the 4th grade, I hated the fact that I had 2 initials that were the same (CJJ). So, I purposed in my heart that when I got married, I would not marry anyone who’s last name started w/ a C or a J. I succeeded!
My first name is Eugene. I challenge you to find another Eugene under 30 years old.
I was named after my grandfather – an amazing man – who was born in the rural South during legalized segregation. His mother named him after the only doctor in town who was willing to treat black people.
My middle name is my mother’s maiden name and thus her father Eugene’s last name.
Did I already say that Eugene was an awesome man?
Just gonna throw this out. But most of ya’ll are luck to not be a redundant named child.
Joseph C. Bergeron IV
Yup. THE FOURTH! It’s kinda cool, but then at the same time not.
Matthew Dewey Williams.
Not sure why Matthew, other than my parents liked it.
Dewey was my great-grandfather’s name, and my mom wanted to make my grandmother happy.
When I have a son, I would like to name him:
(something that begins with a)D Josiah Williams
and call him D.J.
D.J. is my grandfather’s name, and he has always been one of the most influential men in my life. Josiah after the king in 2 Kings who was made king at age 8, (or 12, or sometime around there). He rediscovered the Law and brought a revival to Israel. I want my son to be raised up as a man of God and as a leader from a young age. And for the D, it really just depends on what I want at the time.
Of course, all this is dependent on the agreement of my wife.
sara = my parents were listening to bob dylan while my mom was preggers with me. “sara” came on and dad suggests that as a name.
jane = my aunt’s american name; mom is the 2nd of 5 kids (1 son, 4 daughters – mom is the eldest daughter, jane e-mo came after)
choe = one of the more common korean last names, and actually, the ‘e’ is not silent and is pronounced similar to “che” as in che guevara. mom’s maiden name is yi, and of course, traced far back enough, i can claim that my ancestors were part of the yi dynasty.
tracy elizabeth callison kase
b/c my mom wouldn’t let my dad name me allison callison.
LOL ok, so my name is Kjersti. Yah. It’s Scandinavian.. Which makes sense as I’m Norwegian.
Actually, my mum keeps saying she was gonna name me something else, but my brothers, dad and sister came in the hispital door and wanted to see Kjersti – because that’s the name they prayed for. I don’t believe her for a second though.
My great grandma in Sweden was named Kjerstin, and apparently she was extremely kind.. Also, it means “Christian” or “follower of Christ” – same as Kathryn/Catherine, Kristian/Christian and so on.
However… In English, my name is KJ, Kirsty/Kristy or something strange
Brett Godfrey Vincient Reite
Mom told me Brett was from her brother (Uncle)’s summer friend they met where they camped.
Godfrey and Vincient were the names of both great-grandfathers
Reite (pronounced ‘Right’) is from my biological Dad!
So…I use some corny jokes now and again of my name
speaking of names and origins, this is worth your time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc176yYdcxY
Hi Esther,
This is in response to your explanation for the name Amarendran.
It does not mean executive ambition. It is a sanskrit
name taken from the puranas or Hindu epics. It has nothing to do with ambition either executive or otherwise.
It simply means the Lord of the Immortals. I am sure this meaning is a lot more impressive than executive ambitions.
It is another name for Indra who is the lord of the Gods …thus Lord of the immortals.
Indra or Indran is akin to Zeus in the Greek Pantheon.
Amar = No death or immortal
A is the prefix which denotes negation . Mar = death and A + mar is no death or without death or immortal.
Strangely even in English the letter A prefixed to a word gives it an opposite meaning. I can think of only one example ” atypical” . I am sure others will come to your mind.
Mar or death comes from the sanskrit language which is the root of most Indian languages. In Tamil it is “maranam” In Hindi you say Mar for dead . You may have heard or statements on the radio when a great Indian leader dies. They say : Mahatma Gandhi Amar raha hai which means Gandhi has become immoortal – an euphemistic way of saying he died.
In French the word for death is La Mort …in Spanish I think it is muerte.
I guess you must be pissed off reading all this but I think it is wrong to carry an erroneous notion for a lifetime, in this case the meaning of your name.
Counter check what I have said on the net and let me know if I am wrong. I doubt it very much.
By the way my name first name is Amarendran and I am proud if it. I keep googling my name to see who else in the world has it and I happened upon your name.
Have a nice day and carry your name with pride.
Amarendran
