If Jesus walked into your church this Sunday morning…
I know, you think He is already there, we all do…
What would Jesus tell you He DID NOT LOVE about what was happening?
What would Jesus tell you He LOVED about what was happening?

PS.  It’s ok church staffers, you can be anonymous…

I think Jesus would dislike if we were more concerned about picking at things our church does wrong then what we do right… Jesus wouldn’t say “i don’t like this about your church” He would say “I love this about your church…” We know, we feel convicted by the things we could do better, and we’ll get there… it’s called”appreciative enquiry” asking questions about how we could improve whilst still appreciating and being encouraged by the wins that we have!

Jesus and along with all those drawn to his spiritual essence would gather wherever the moment provided. Whom ever joined him, would do so quietly and know Christ welcomed them. The spirit would guide the conversation in response to individual and collective needs. The words Christ speaks will be unlike those filtered and interpreted by the ego of man. Christ will speak words and share ideals the most learned religious scholars could not anticipate nor imagine. In fact most persons of religious faith will not recognize him as the Messiah so different will his message be from Christ’s recorded history. Only those who are not locked into books and man made rituals, those whose spirits and minds and egos are free enough to be open to words spoken directly from the very mouth of Christ, will not only hear but understand Christ’s message. Christ will not visit religious buildings nor pass judgments as he travels sharing his pure unfiltered message with whom ever cares to listen.

Not a staffer, so I can speak freely. :)

I think He would love the fact that we are making a concerted effort to increase showing His love to our community. We’re making a big push over the next few months to get out and really try to help others, without expectation or agenda. Unless you can call trying to show the love of Jesus an agenda…I guess you can, but still.

I think he would not love that there are still people in the church that are more concerned with appearances than being real. As I heard Mark Hall say once, “You’d think that the church would be the one place in the world where you could go and confess your hangups and get love and support.” (paraphrased) That just isn’t the case with some church goers. They’ll stand by you and support you if you have “Believer problems” like truly knowing God’s will, or praying about a new job, or something like that. But if you’re struggling with lust, or have had an affair, or are wondering if you should get a divorce…you sometimes become a pariah. I think that makes Him sad. I know it makes me sad.

I think He would have loved the story told….the stories told all month…

I think He would have been disappointed that I was more afraid than risky in talking to others there…looking more to be safe than to make others feel welcome

He probably wouldn’t have a chance to speak. Too many other rock stars there…….

    Thats most churches today.

I think he would not like how much we worry about our “meetings” and services and would want us to do more outside the walls of church. I think that is for most churches. We do a lot at the church I am on staff at but I think at many churches we worry a lot about our services and little about our serving.

I think he would like the community we have in small groups, “LIFEGroups”, at our church and I think he would like that we do strive to reach others, share His love, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc.

    • los 1 September 2010 at 12:15 pm #

      How can that change?

      • Luke W. 1 September 2010 at 1:45 pm #

I am not sure… but you have made me want to think about it. It’s a weird thing we deal with. I think the corporate worship is super important but if that’s all we do I think we have missed it.
I think a lot of people in church get it and do great things while others still miss it.

Thanks for making us think Carlos. I love the blogs

“I love what you have done with the place but if you need me I will be out in Ely Square.”

read “Ely Square” as the hungry, needy, lost, and homeless.

I think He would say, why are you just going through the motions? What’s the point of that?

It’s hard for me to figure out what he wouldn’t like, because our teaching pastor is so incredibly transparent when it comes to his heart for our church and for reaching the cities we live in. He’s constantly working to do things better, more efficiently, to steward the church’s money better, to be strategic in how we do church. And I love that about him and how that translates into church.

I think Jesus might wonder if we really need such a flashy service all the time. I recently started helping out with the lighting, and as much as I’m enjoying learning so much, I wonder if it really does much to help people encounter Jesus.

I think Jesus would love how welcoming we are. Any visitor would get greeted at least three times before they found their seat, and that’s before the “greet someone around you” time. I think he would love the sincere joy of the volunteers who make church happen.

I hear you saying that you’re not happy with the current president…but what about the 145 million orphans in the world?

You’re fighting the healthcare bill…but what about my children that are dying of thirst in Africa?

You don’t like the sermon? The music’s too loud? Someone is in your seat?…I have come that you may have life, and have it abundantly!

Quit off-loading your kids & go work in the nursery once in a while.

I love your diversity! (God has blessed our church)

I think he’d he pumped about a Detroit church plant. Bold and genuine. I think he’d be wondering where all the men are though – there seems to be a 3-1 or maybe 3-2 advantage to women, for some reason.

‘Why are you all sitting apart?’
‘I love your creativity with music, it’s so refreshing!’

wow, you guys are all speaking in tongues! (it’s a polish church). but why is it so, that your following me is a once a week episode, whereas following tv shows affects every aspect of your life: how you dress, how you talk, what impresses you and how you want to impress others, what you consider a success and a failure. is this service just another tv series for you? or even worse: is this whole doing church thing a gossip girl set? i want to be a director of your life, not just an extra.

    What? I didn’t say that.

  21. Matthew W 1 September 2010 at 10:01 pm #

Love: the free nature of worship.
NOT love: the preaching isn’t exactly Gospel centered. Very human-driven, if that makes any sense.

why are you in here? and not out there

  23. darooda 2 September 2010 at 9:26 am #

    Where the dudes at?

I love the ways you are serving, now trust me more and watch me take it to 11.

    Why is everyone bored?

  25. Bob Ellis 2 September 2010 at 2:26 pm #

He’d want to know if what we’re doing “in here” is really making a difference “out there”-with emphasis on the “out there”

  26. Tom 2 September 2010 at 6:05 pm #

    “it’s just a fucking building.”

  27. Rick 3 September 2010 at 12:55 am #

He’d ask why all of these middle class people were here at church. Where are the poor? The homeless? The fatherless? The people nobody else wants to associate with? I thought I set a better example than that…

  28. Beverly Brown 3 September 2010 at 9:59 am #

He’d say quit worrying and pay attention:
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

  29. Christine 3 September 2010 at 11:52 pm #

He might have said, “You pay so much attention to your outward appearance and image. You smile broadly and let your glitter shine, yet you have ignored me as I came in here in the form of the meek and lowly seeking God’s love and to find the way to true life.”

He would be so amazed that we think we have this all figured out. At least, that’s my guess…
