What is your favorite Live concert DVD?
I get inspired when I see a band play live.
Their album could suck, but their live show could rescue that in a heartbeat.
So I buy live concert DVD’s.
I have lots of them.
The last one I got was MuteMath’s Armistice Live.
Recorded here in Atlanta at The Tabernacle in 2009, it does a great job capturing what happens when you stand before Paul Meany.
Let’s share.
What is your favorite Live concert DVD?
Los

The last concert DVD I bought was Michael Buble. An amazing swinger/crooner and a hilarious entertainer.
Gotta be Steven Curtis Chapman Live. The “Beyond the Gates of Splendor” segment and the testimonies were incredible.
If I had to pick one, I’d say Slipknot’s “Disasterpieces”. It was filmed in London not long after the release of Iowa. But right behind it for me is John Mayer’s “Where the Light Is”. I know, I’m a little eclectic. I’ll probably buy the Big 4 Blu-ray this week, so that may knock Slipknot off their pedestal.
SRV’s “Live at the El Mocambo” is a favorite of mine.
And now I must go to Amazon. SRV was amazing.
30 Second to Mars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Beautiful_Lie_-_Deluxe_Edition#Deluxe_edition
Peter Gabriel “Secret World Live”. A must see with Tony Levin on bass & Manu Katche on drums and Paula Cole on bvg.
Either “Stop Making Sense” by Talking Heads
or “The Last Waltz” by The Band
I like a band’s DVD to tell a story. That’s why my favorites are “Make a Joyful Noise Here” about the Danielson Famile and “Heima” abotu Sigur Ros.
I think you already have it in your hands. Mutemath has some of the most epic live recordings. Another favorite of mine is U2 Live at Slane Castle.
Led Zeppelin- 2 DVD set, 2003…. Unbelievable
Second the Peter Gabriel “Secret World Live”, amazing gig. And John Mayer “Where the Light is”, could (and do) watch it over and over again.
In no particular order:
1. Switchfoot – Live in San Diego
2. U2 – Go Home – Live From Slain Castle
3. U2 – 360 Rose Bowl
4. Clay Aiken Christmas J/K
U2′s rockumentary from way back…Rattle & Hum. Still watch it quite a bit. Now, I’m off to the big city to find the Mutemath DVD!
I said the exact same thing, except for I am rocking to the VHS version
er…I do not understand the question…I am not cool
I do the same thing man. It gets me pumped without even leaving the sofa.
Butch Walker Leavin’ the Game on Lucky Street is pretty sweet.
Green Day Bullet in a Bible is cool as well. Especially the comentary between songs.
Waterdeep: Live at New Earth. Epic.
Wait?! This is a DVD. I’ve had the CD for almost 10 years, but there is video of this epic. Where can I get it?
i’m a fan of Mayer’s “Where the Light Is”
+1
Ease call. Pink Floyd’s Pulse. The stage production is second to none. The reaction from my teenage sons, who have never seen big stadium concerts, was one of shock and awe. It’s fun to watch it with them.
Ima go old skool and say DC Talk’s “Welcome to the Freak Show.”
nicodemusatnite.blogspot.com
U2 Rattle and Hum VHS.
Yes I said it, VHS.
The reason this is my favorite live recorded album is because as a kid i would sit in front of the TV and watch that thing for hours. Pretending I was Larry Mullins Jr playing on boxes and pans.
From age 3 till now U2 has been my favorite band.
My favorite live album is Dave Matthews Band live at Central Park.
Cortez the Killer (on disc 3 track 1) is one of the best songs I have ever heard.
Los, your post just reminded me that someone borrowed my MuteMath Live DVD…it is awesome and I need to get it back…Typical, Chaos, oh yeah!
Also, Dave Matthews Band Live ANYWHERE always fires me up. My favorite is a little old school, but gotta be DMB Live at Red Rocks
John Mayer Trio “Try” and John Mayer’s “Where the Light is”. My husband wasn’t even a Mayer fan until he went with me to a concert.
Eric Clapton – One More Car, One More Rider. Great musicians in the band, and I went to one of the concerts on that tour. It was greats rad.
Also,
dc Talk – Welcome to the Freakshow, Jesus Freak changed my life and this tour melted my face off.
Any Rush DVD.
CWB on youtube…
Ben Harper: Pleasure + Pain. Little more of a rockumentary but certainly one of my favs.
U2- Live at Slane Castle
U2 – Elevation 2001 – Live from Boston
That’s my favorite thus far…
Ditto
i don’t know how Muse’s “H.A.A.R.P: Live from Wembley” isn’t on this list yet. Definitely the greatest live DVD I’ve ever seen.
U2 – Vertigo 2005 Live from Chicago
DMB/Live in Central Park
Not sure about the live DVDs but I love when a band I like puts out a movie. I still remember loving the Newsboys’ “Down Under the Big Top” …of course I was like 8 when I first saw it.
Israel Houghton “Live from Africa” and Hillsong – “I Heart”
U2 Rattle and Hum. John Mayer’s Where The Light Is. Mutemath’s Flesh and Bones Electric Fun. Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) Sunken Treasure: Live In The Pacific Northwest.
The Cure – Trilogy.
Coldplay Live 2003
Either Sigur Ros “Heima” or U2′s Live from Slain Castle. Both are epic on many levels.
Mine are:
U2: ZooTV Live From Sydney
U2: Rattle and Hum
Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time
1) U2-Go Home: Live From Slane Castle
2) Simon & Garfunkel: Live at Central Park
3) The Allman Bros. Band Live at The Beacon Theater
Matt
Toss up between U2 Boston or U2 Slane Castle. love the production of the Boston one, but Slane is a better performance. Especially with Bono talking to his dad before Streets.
My fave live footage will always be from Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same. Except now that I’m living for Jesus, I do feel convicted about how much I enjoy seeing Robert Plant in those jeans. Yowza!
Thrice: Live at the House of Blues
John Mayer: Where the Light Is
Mute Math: Armistice
Switchfoot: Live in San Diego
Jesus Culture- Consumed!
Totally captures their heart of worship.
My favorite live DVD is easily U2 Go Home. I think the boys played with a little extra energy in front of the home crowd.
U2 Live At Red Rock
Van Halen “live with out a net” it was their first tour with Hagar.
After that would be DMB central park
David Crowder Band – Remedy Live. They bring the same energy to every concert.
Heima – Sigur Ros. Hands down.
i’d have to say there are 4 that i totally love.
@foofighters-”Skin and Bones” and “Live at Wembly Stadium”
@Pearljam-”Live at the Garden”
@Phish-”IT”
phenominal
favorite of all time? it’s not out on dvd… Michael W. Smith’s “Change Your World Live”
Tied for second is The Moody Blues live at the Royal Albert Hall, and Michael Ball live at the Royal Albert Hall (is there some magical quality to the RAH over there in England we should know about?)
PS just for the record, one must also understand that I practically wore the VHS out in middle school… one time I was home sick from school and watched it 5 times in one day… I haven’t watched it in more than a year and I could still probably quote half or more of what MWS says on it… “Hello, I’m Michael W. Smith. Some people ask me… so what kind of music do you do anyway…” um yeah… burned into memory forever… but also just fabulous because its right at the heyday of my favorite Smitty music – I mean really – there’s a sad lack of guitar solos in the middle of songs these days…
Now if you want a source of AMUSEMENT – find yourself one of his early videos – the clothes are hilarious, seeing young Amy Grant and Gary Chapman looking about as hilarious as Michael, and finally, the piece de resistance – the KEYTAR… everything is made better by a keytar…
Sting’s All This Time. Live show at his house in Tuscany scheduled for September 11, 2001. yes, THAT 9/11.
The behind the scenes stuff is amazing. Watching the band gather together from all corners of the world at Sting’s place, rehearsing together, building this camaraderie and then, day of the show…the world stops as the towers fall. It’s something like 2:00 in the afternoon in Italy when this hits. They have the cameras rolling as the band has to figure out what to do. Seeing their despair, anger and ultimately their resolve to fight back with their art and love for humanity is powerful. You can feel it in show later that night.
The musicianship is unparalleled. The story and heart behind it makes it that much better.
Tobymac’s Alive and Transported. That dude puts on a SHOW!
Dream Theater – Score, it is a good representation of their career.
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert or Live at Wembley, both are pretty epic.
U2- Veritgo 2005: Live from Chicago
The ending: Yahweh; 40. Best Worship Experience Ever.
Have to agree with the previous posts naming Dave Matthews Band Central Park concert. They are always tight live (seen them six times) but they were super tight that night. The crowd was great. And Warren Haynes joining them on Cortez the Killer was outstanding, topped only (for me) by Grey Street my favorite song of theirs.
I also agree about Rattle and Hum because the video version has the Sunday Bloody Sunday performance from Denver (11/8/87), the same day as the Enniskillen Remembrance Day bombing. That performance (and Bono’s commentary) angered the IRA, made the band afraid of their own song, and was too much to put on the album. Thanks to Audio Hijack Pro, I have ripped the audio from my DVD copy and added it to my iTunes RnH. As Bono so eloquently said, “F**k the revolution.”
Anything Hillsong.
Or Jonsi, when his comes out. The concert was magical and I fully expect the live DVD to follow suite.
…besides Freak Show, right?
Nirvana Unplugged. THE defining live show of our generation.
David Crowder Bands Remedy Club Tour… because it’s the only live DVD I’ve ever seen.
OK, just because most people are going with rock, I’m choosing outside the box – Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Live at the Quick. Because seriously, those guys are masters of their instruments.
Totally agree on this one. I got caught up in the rock mindset but I should have mentioned Alison Krauss and Union Station: Live. Like the Flecktones they are masters on their instruments – including Krauss’ voice (which she uses like an instrument).
Someone said it already, but Coldplay 2003 aces what it is to have hypnotic atmosphere
And, without hesitation, I whole heartedly recommend Justin Timberlake’s futuresex/loveshow- live from Madison Square Garden… dude’s got skills, the stage has like 5 dimensions, Timbaland shows up, and the band is killing.
Am I the only one who still likes the old Ron Kenoly DVDs? Abe Laboriel on bass, Alex Acuna on percussion, Justo Almario on sax and flute. Those were great. Tried to share this with other members of our worship team, but no love. From “I See the Lord” to the end on the God Is Able DVD is pure worship, at least to me. Am I old school or just a sappy nostalgic?
Keith Urban’s “Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy World” Tour
Ben Folds Five – Live Sessions At W. 54th without a doubt. Small venue for a PBS show. Hands down the best live DVD I’ve seen/owned.
Tom Petty – Runnin Down A Dream was pretty epic, but i guess it was more a ducumentary with live stuff.
I love any U2 live DVD, I really appreciate the creativity of the band through the years. As for MuteMath, I know Paul personally back from the days when they were Earthsuit. I haven’t seen the DVD yet, but knowing Paul and Roy and the creativity that they have I am sure it is killer.
Right now…
Prince – Sign O The Times
i was at the mutemath show where they taped the DVD. you can hear me screaming in the background like a little girl.
Rich Mullins Live in Lufkin Tx. So fortunate to have this recording only days before he died. Still love so much of what he said between songs and the musicianship of the ragamuffins is astounding.
mutemath is amazing!!! also there is a new post up on http://firsttrueloveonline.com , i want you guys to check out @preemptivelove
in no order:
Ian Moore: live from the Iron Cactus
anything SRV
PJ live at the garden
Slipknot Disasterpieces
Linkin Park Live from Texas
–Rattle and Hum – “Bad” and “Streets” in particular.
–SRV – Live at the El Mocambo
–Pink Floyd – Pulse
i’d say dave matthews live at radio city or john mayer: where the light is.
U2′s Live at Slane Castle is pretty friggin’ phenomenal.
my morning jacket – live at okonokos. when i bought it i watched it everyday for 3 weeks.
and the sigur ros dvd will ruin you.
1.-Butch Walker Leavin’ the Game on Lucky Street
2.-The Avett Brothers Live Vol. 3
3.-Wilco- I am trying to break your heart
And not really a live DVD, but “It might get loud in here” is amazing.
Appears this list needs a little Prog.
Riverside, Live in Amsterdam 2008, Anno Domini High Definition
Van Der Graaf Generator, Live at the Paradiso
Mostly Autumn, That Night in Leamington
Mike Oldfield, The Art in Heaven Concert
Not prog but also should mention:
Metallica, Orgullo Pasion Y Gloria…
and The B52s, With the Wild Crowd, Live in Athens, Ga.
