Speak Now – I Know Every Word

Posted on 14. Dec, 2010 by in Family, fatherhood

I hear dad’s saying how they can’t believe I know every word to every Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber song.
My response to them…
I can’t believe they DON’T know every word.
It is unacceptable to me to NOT know what my kids are or will be listening to.
And don’t Jesus Juke me…No I’m not letting them listen to NWA if they want to.

Live in your kids world for a moment and they will live in yours forever.
Straight Outta Compton…

    Dear Carlos,

You are the only man in the world who could manage to look gansta with all that going on. Just wanted to let you know. – Lys.

And you didn’t join in because…? I wanted to see you prove that you knew the lyrics. =)

Yeah, I was expecting a trio, not a duet!

I agree with TJ, till I see you sing it, you don’t know it! :) jk

“Jesus Juke”…I nearly spewed coffee cuz of that! That’s new to me…I plan to use it regularly…thanks! :D

I agree completely and I know all the words too. We watch iCarly together, read Harry Potter together, and I follow their media faves on Twitter and keep them up on the latest info (still trying to decide what the right age is for Twitter/Facebook – this might make a good discussion here).

Btw, you should have posted this yesterday on 12/13 – it was Taylor’s birthday.

I’m in line with TJ and Patrick.

I think a Ragamuffin TSwift music video is in order. Bring it, Los.

    TJ’s got ya…boom roasted!

I agree with you man. As parents it is our responsibility to teach our children to live like Christ in culture. We’re aren’t to be cut off.

This is great advice!… My kids are still toddlers, but as they grow up I think the idea of “living in their world” is on I will work on adopting.

    Great video too!

We know our kids’ music and they know ours. WE just never made a dividing line.

I love that they’re singing it like rock stars. They may have a little of their father in them. ;)

I wonder how many people reading this would have no idea who was in NWA without checking the link.

    • Dave Pettengill 15 December 2010 at 1:48 pm #

Whats going to be awesome is if they open a link to a song and they don’t know who NWA is or what there songs are like…LOL that will be like a mid-afternoon caffeine shot! Also hilarious that Straight Outta Compton and Dora are in the same post!

My kids cannot stand Justin Bieber.

    I win.

Last night in the car my daughter said, “I saw the video where somebody threw a water bottle at Justin Bieber.” My son said, “That’s a smart person.”

Thankfully my daughters, too, can’t stand JB… thank you JESUS for that small favor since I DID have to live through 3 years of Barney worship back in the day….

Too cute! For the record, I am 29 and I heart Taylor Swift. =) My hubby is taking me to see her next summer, and I can’t wait! And whether he would admit it or not, my hubby loves Taylor Swift too. =)

You gotta know what your kids are watching and what your kids are listening to.

I know all the shows, the characters, the relationships and the punchlines.

I know all the songs, the lyrics and the background on the singers.

That is just by sitting with them while they are watching what they are watching.

me too…hey it’s a great cd!! btw, they look beautiful and adorable as usual. ;)

HAHAHA!! The expression on your face is PRICELESS!!

As the father of a 3.5 year old little princess who is as girly as they come I am dreading the day I can no longer avoid TW & JB.

Props to you for being man enough to be such a great dad.

Great words. When my kids were teens I watched BET and MTV for that very reason. Years later I’m still listening to their music in the car with them and sometimes “I bust the windows out your car” still plays in my head hrs later!

  20. John 14 December 2010 at 3:54 pm #

Just another reason why I look up to you Los! You’re an inspiration my friend. Keep doing what you do!

  21. Melyndiana Jones 14 December 2010 at 5:30 pm #

Yep–if they’re listening, so am I. We know all the words–except for number 11. My kids haven’t figured out that I took that one off before loading their mp3 players–just didn’t want to have to explain what the actress is known for doing “on the mattress.” They’re a bit young. =)

An awesome mother-daughter memory I have is of the Taylor Swift concert. I admit I brought out the cellphone and recorded (MY kid–Taylor’s mom can tape her own kid!). I will never forget the joy on my daughter’s face–copying every dance move, getting her groove on–she was five, and if she ever runs for office this video will get some serious airplay, LOL!

i’m seeing a wilson/whittaker concert coming on this weekend… we LOVE that song!

So funny…my husband has the same exact expression on his face when we are blasting TS in the car with our two girls. This is of course the same man who was completely thrilled to have met her in person earlier this year :-)

“i wanna be a billionaire.” I thought it said so “freakin bad”. lol. on the radio it does..not so much the official video on you tube. shocker. I definitely listen to my 8 year old’s music that he loves. Luckily, my 16 year old boy is loving Ray lamontagne, black keys, Ben Harper, Black Crowes, Johnny Cash..whew. Thank you, God!

  25. April 15 December 2010 at 10:51 am #

I like that you know what your kids are listening to! That’s the only way to do it. They are precious!!

  26. Carole Turner 15 December 2010 at 12:51 pm #

I just had my 14 year old burn me a CD, we all listen to music together, all the time. I did however make her take ALL Miley Cyrus songs off my iTunes, they are just the absolute worst, she doesn’t care for them either.

“I aint straight out of Compton, I’m straight out the trailer!”

“Live in your kids world for a moment and they will live in yours forever.” What a great sentiment and philosophy of life as a parent.

Music is a wonderful connector for parents and kids. My son’s gifts to his kindergarten teachers include his mix for 2010. Sure, one could say it’s my music, but it’s we music we both love. And it’s sure to be a very personal gift…hopefully one they like. :)

Thanks for this post. Have a wonderful Christmas!

What song is that? I like the lyrics.

  29. Annie 21 December 2010 at 12:53 pm #

Preachin’ to the choir. I find I actually love 99% of the music my kids do after listening a couple times. We watch crazy YouTube videos together. They are still young (8 & 10) but we are building a foundation.

Jesus Juke!?! It’s new to me but sounds like an instant classic.
