phonebooks. It took a lot longer to figure things out, but you didn’t know it was taking long because it was the only option. Oh and I remember using encyclopedias.

  2. MJT 31 January 2011 at 1:27 pm #

people read the newspapers, watched the local news, visited on the telephone(land lines of course).. news of things happening traveled much slower, decisions being made took longer, had to gather info.. phone books, yellow pages, word of mouth was a way to communicate, and viral was an infection not media event( maybe that is an infection?)I will probably think of some more- question for someone, what year is the internet considered to be something for everyone to use?

1994 I remember getting my first email address, trying to explain it to my parents and not really getting it myself.

  4. HeatherEV 31 January 2011 at 1:49 pm #

Haha! I was a little kid when the internet started to become popular. I remember when it was “cool” to have internet and when everyone had dial-up and high speed was fascinating and new…now we get frustrated when pages take more than 2 seconds to load :)

  5. Jenn 31 January 2011 at 1:59 pm #

Ha! That footage just blows my mind; it really wasn’t long ago that we’d never heard of the internet! I try to explain that to my kids, that we didn’t have it growing up and they just look at me so confused…

  6. tim 31 January 2011 at 1:59 pm #

looking at that and realizing it really was not that long makes me think and wonder about what the next 15 years will hold.

    • BrandiB 31 January 2011 at 2:23 pm #

I agree Tim. Now I get why older folks go on and on about how things were when they were coming up. I’m amazed just at the changes in the past 15 years!

It’s just hard to imagine not knowing how to read an email address now. I was a senior in high school and I remember being AMAZED by chat rooms in 1995. I could talk to people in other countries and in the same dorm as long as we were all online at the same sight!

    And now…my 3 yr old browses Ebay…

I used to get my news from the news. Not twitter.

That happened to me a couple of nights ago. I remember thinking, “You people are SOOOOO late.”

I read more books. I knew that if I wanted to meet people I would have to actually make a physical effort to see them.

    Mercy, I feel old.

This post may also be titled, “The dullest conversation that ever happened on TV.”

ha! i especially like Roker’s desperate attempt to move on before looking dumber.

      • Blake 31 January 2011 at 3:36 pm #

        Roker? You mean Bryant Gumble?

    Ha! This is hilarious!

I remember getting those CD-ROMS of free internet hours from AOL, and BEGGING my parents to get us AOL.

    • Jen Ochej 31 January 2011 at 5:57 pm #

I tooooootally forgot about those CD-ROMS! Ha! Thanks for the reminder, I’m totally chuckling to myself now.

      • @delton70 1 February 2011 at 12:13 am #

CD-ROMs? I remember the floppy diskettes!

I remember looking in real encyclopedias and dictionaries to find information.

    • Jam 31 January 2011 at 3:41 pm #

      • talley 31 January 2011 at 4:23 pm #

    • lorasam 2 February 2011 at 12:50 am #

And giving it to someone to type, b/c I was already exhausted from all the handwriting. These days I sit in front of this laptop for hrs, then I wonder what did I accomplish?
      The good ol’ days.

  12. Dustin 31 January 2011 at 2:32 pm #

That is awesome! I remember having to go over to a friends houses to play multiplayer video games…

  13. Jamie 31 January 2011 at 2:32 pm #

I graduated high school one year shy of the internet. I’ll be telling my grandchildren one day that when a paper was due, I had to do my research by walking to something called a “library”. (With the rise of Kindle, who knows how long those will be around!)

  14. jason 31 January 2011 at 2:34 pm #

I had no idea how we booked flights before the internet until I had this conversation with an older person.

    • Jen Ochej 31 January 2011 at 5:58 pm #

I had that same conversation just like, two weeks ago. I couldn’t fathom not just going to Expedia (or some such site).

  15. Jonathan Chang 31 January 2011 at 2:38 pm #

Oregon Trail comes to mind for some reason lol.

Wow…and to think that was only when I was a Junior in High School! That was only 17 years ago! Holy cow!

  17. Lon 31 January 2011 at 4:12 pm #

I remember being on BBS (bulletin board systems that people would dial up to) and they offered up email addresses and I was like… who on earth would I ever be writing to?

  18. Matt James 31 January 2011 at 4:52 pm #

I find it funny that the only one who knows what the internet is running the camera…

Remember those books full of information? Pedia’s and what-not. With a panoramic picture on the binders. And people actually walked door to door trying to sell you the monstrosities? Ah, yes.

    • Lori Jo 31 January 2011 at 9:28 pm #

those things were amazing when i was little. i especially loved the kids versions with lots of stuff to do and learn!

  20. Carole Turner 31 January 2011 at 5:30 pm #

The world was a lot bigger, much was unaccessable. We spent more time talking to each other.

  21. Abby Y 31 January 2011 at 5:46 pm #

This makes me feel really young. I wasn’t born when this aired on TV (just gimme a few months to make my appearance!). Although I do remember before cell phones having to determine a place and a time to meet when you split up to go shopping. Especially at Christmas.

    • Jenny 31 January 2011 at 7:33 pm #

and now don’t I feel old!

    • Eric 31 January 2011 at 7:43 pm #

I’m the same way! This kinda blows my mind because I just can’t imagine how I would operate without the Internet. That’s really depressing but true :P

  22. Kendra 31 January 2011 at 8:13 pm #

Ha ha! My son was just asking me this week if we used to watch Michael Jackson videos on YouTube when we were growing up. I had to explain to him that we didn’t have the INTERNET when we were growing up. He said, “OH”. LOL That video was HILARIOUS!

  23. Lori Jo 31 January 2011 at 9:20 pm #

they sound soooo dumb…hahaha so funny.

before the internets i played dos games that used commands. remember the game, castle? my favorite. i remember playing lots of random computer games on the family computer.

    haha. so weird.

  24. Shanda 31 January 2011 at 11:01 pm #

I remember a time when I actually looked at people’s faces when I talked to them. Those were the good old days.

  25. Merle Sauvola 31 January 2011 at 11:40 pm #

Hah! This is awesome!! I also remember going to blockbuster to pick up the aol floppy disc to try to get online.. My genius self didn’t have a modem, or didn’t know you needed one.. (give me a break I was in 6th grade). Now my 15 month old son can unlock my ipone, and turn on iTunes. It’s amazing how fast things advance!

Ps I finally convinced my parents that they will never fought the 1988 encyclopedias again. #nowatthedump

Before the internet, I talked a lot on the phone. And played Super Mario 3.

Half my childhood was without internet and cell phones and half was with it. We got internet when I was in 8th grade and I had a cell phone when I was a freshman in high school.

But boy I missed just leaving a note on the counter telling my parents where I was. Kids have it rough these days with the locators on their phones or whatnot.

This video almost hurt my brain to watch. I was still watching “Salute Your Shorts” and “Are You Afraid of the Dark.”

  29. Matt Lane 1 February 2011 at 1:04 pm #

Not to get all serious but this is still how much of the world operates. They have no clue about the Internet.

Life before the internet? How about life before the iPhone?

  31. joy 1 February 2011 at 1:48 pm #

I barely remember life without the Internet. I had an AOL account forever (still have it…lol….but rarely use it) and have worked with computers since my first “real” job. What’s funny is a billion years ago when we had DSL, the DSL service was down. My son ran down the stairs screaming hysterically that his sister had “used up the Internet” because she spent too much time in chat rooms (remember those? lol!)!! He thought she had used it all up and that’s why it wasn’t working! My husband and I laughed so hard we needed oxygen afterwards!

This same son would cry if he had to spend the night with relatives who only had “dial up” service because he was so used to the awesome speed of DSL! Ha! So, now we have FIOS and he’s a computer science major with a need for speed…lol…

  32. Jenny 1 February 2011 at 3:47 pm #

I remember college before starbucks and cell phones
I remember the work place before computers
I remember reveal codes on Word Perfect (before windows existed)
And I just turned 40 so all this was not so long ago.

    Crazy!

I’m late to the party on this one, but I almost remember life before the internet.. I’m 32, so when that clip took place I was 16, and already using computer networks. My dad, fortunately for me, was an early adapter then… we had Prodigy computer service which gave us “electronic mail” — This was before everything was connected, before the “world wide web” I could only talk to other people who used Prodigy, but not people on Compuserve or AOL (if it was invented yet.) This was as early as 1991 and 1992.. I know this because the first emails I sent were to fans of New Kids on the Block before they broke up in 1994!! lol

There was a time that we were allotted a certain amount of emails a month, and then they charged like, $0.25 for each one after that… I think it was 30 a month.. basically one email a day. I knew I was in trouble when they installed the counter the month before the charging started and I racked up 150+ in a month!

Email addressed and accounts were just assigned, my family paid for the PCGK44 account, and each family member had their own letter after that for prodigy, so my first email was PCGK44C@PRODIGY.COM or something like that.. amazing I remember those numbers.

IT wasn’t until 1995, however, that we had decent full blown internet service the way we think of it today… I can, however tell you the first website I went to… It was the very first Jars of Clay website, and that was some wonky list of letters and numbers..

so, yeah… I remember having trouble in high school and college wanting to cite websites for information and the professors and teachers not even understanding where the information came from.
