Disturb And Disrupt – The Message
Carlos Whittaker-Calibrate 2010 from Calibrate NW on Vimeo.
I was nervous.
I was pinned as a keynote speaker between Francis Chan and Alan Hirsch.
What were they thinking?
I lead worship.
I don’t normally communicate with words put together longer than 90 seconds.
But for some reason God allowed me to share my heart with the folks at the Calibrate Conference in Seattle this fall.
Right before I went out Alan told me to be myself and deliver the prophetic word God had given me.
It was the nudge I needed.
And I feel like it was received well.
It was disturbing.
It was disrupting.
The main talk starts right at 9:30 seconds after a short interview.
I hope you get something out of it.
I have hesitated putting this up online because I am around amazing communicators every week and I am obviously not used to it.
But God can use a donkey.
And so he used a Carlitos.
Enjoy…
Los

Los,
I saw that you posted this link in a thread last week responding to a someone who judged what you do without knowing the facts (ignorance is bliss). I immediately watched it in it’s entirety. Then I went back and watched some of it again. I can’t speak for the folks in the Emerald City, but I know this talk was a word for me and the church I lead in TN. I shared it with our worship leader as soon as I was finished. Thanks for being real and obedient.
Carlo
I remember being there and it was awesome. Thank you for the challenge.
P.S. Enjoyed talking on the drive to your hotel. We’ll have to grab coffee the next time you’re in town.
Thanks man
Just finished listening. Very powerful word, I linked to it on my blog. It is a message many of us “career” Christians need to hear. Thank you for allowing God to speak through you.
All I can say is Amen & WOW! Thank you for saying “Yes” when God put this opportunity before you! So much food for thought, and I pray that we will not just hear it & think about it, but that we will hear it & take action for God!
I can’t count how many times I have quoted your talk since I saw it last week. Great stuff Carlitos!
Thanks for posting it Carlos! Definitely worth posting. I came across this when you posted it in the comments of a post a few posts back and it was great. Not that I disagree with the stuff you say, like the people were in the comments, but it was insightful to me just to hear you explain it all in one sitting, versus over many blog posts, etc. Thanks again – love what you’re thinking!
I have seen this before but I am watching it again right now… Good Stuff!
I’ve been following your blog for years and have commented here and there, but I have to say this talk may be the most powerful thing I’ve heard from you. May the Lord continue to bless you and bless us through you and bless others through His beautiful church.
This was beautiful. I am still wrapping up the last 10 minutes, but had to let you know this was awesome. Thanks so much for sharing! P.S. you don’t seem nervous at all
Oh but I was!!!!
Great word and video. After I watched it, it reminded me of something we did at the campus I attend at my church. The message was about believing in the next generation…so during the message our pastor had people stand up and people in the church lay hands on them and pray. Now to most of you…you think no big deal…but in our church where people sit down, watch the sermon, and then go chat afterwards…it was HUGE. And here’s the cool part, even though people were a little uncomfortable they did it and it was awesome. The unexpected was so well received that we have been doing more things like that although I’m sure we still need to do more. Keep asking these questions and communicating your insights…they are making a difference.
Thanks Carrie
blessed mess… ask the why first…wow! thanks so much for this Carlos
I tanked a job interview for asking “why”…and don’t have a job yet…can never go back
thanks for the prophetic
Great talk bro. We’re blessed by your story. Thanks for sharing.
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the parents [older generation] to their children [younger generation], and the hearts of the children to their parents” – malachi 4
in tears with sohalia’s story. thank you for sharing this.
I got the Holy Ghost goosebumps…lol. Seriously what a word. I am blessed because I took the time to listen.
HELP ME GOD to not create career Christians but build Christians who attract people to you!!!!
Los,
All I can say is this talk melted my face – I am disturbed and disrupted…thank you!
Carlos – POWERFUL word! I’m not sure why you put yourself down as a speaker because you did a fantastic job!
In that sermon, you allowed to happen EXACTLY what you allowed to happen when you talked to the former child molester… you let Jesus speak through you.
I’m looking forward to see more of your speaking in the future!
Much wisdom. Love the honesty.
And I gotta hear about the couple getting married?!? That’s awesome.
Well Done & Well Said!
Way to put words to your insight and bring some reality to the platform.
Worship Leaders, Professional Clergy and Career Christians…I fall into each of those categories…it’s too easy to keep rockin’ the expected and usual.
I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty about the conflict of living in both the world of leading/performance (for money) and the one where we get refueled and inspired. It’s a delicate balance at moments.
Thanks Los!
Definitely beautiful. Beautiful words, beautiful message from God.
Thanks for allowing him to speak through you
Carlos, All I can say is WOW! you just blew me away! I’ve been feelin’ alot of the same tensions, and I have alot of the same questions. God is using you to speak to tons of worship leaders around the country, no doubt about it! Awesome word bro, thanks for your disturbing & disrupting me! Had me in tears multiple times… hope that doesn’t mean they take my man card away. lol
thanks Los!
Hahaha. Okay, so I think I could have gotten stoned by a few peeps at Sandals for suggesting that I like having kids in church. I’m pretty sure someone (a friend) actually accused me of trying to deprive children and teens of a church experience they could understand. lol. I’m glad you’ve gotten to see the great things about having kids in a main service. I’m not going to go all FIC on you, but I think that kids experiencing faith WITH adults can be priceless.
Wow. Amazing stuff! I wish leaders in my church would watch this and get some ideas. Oh yeah, I hope Heather has found how great we Southerners are!
Wonderful talk, thank you for posting it.
Sohalia’s story really got to me. When my daughter was eight she told us that she wanted to be baptized. We didn’t think that she knew what she was talking about and so talked to a pastor–long story short, we hadn’t grown up in church and had never been baptized so she was the catalyst for our baptism. Keep disturbing and disrupting whenever and wherever God tells you to.
great interview; very thought-provoking and enjoyable. thanks for posting it.
Los,
Thanks for this. As a young leader, your insight and experience is amazing! Really appreciate it.
M
Thanks for posting this.
As one of your older fans, I find it very intriguing that you are getting back in touch with the traditional.
Loved the story of your oldest…awesome. We don’t give children credit that they know what they’re about sometimes, do we?
I just sat here trying to figure out how to compliment your words, but cannot say anything more than it truly makes me think. Think in a very real way. Not in the same sense as when I sit and listen to my professors, but rather in a way that will lead to true, authentic change. Thank you
You know those mozzarella sticks we ate the night before gave you the energy.
It was the bad beer
Thanks for posting this. I wanted to go pretty bad, but I couldn’t afford it
Thanks Los!
It’s not about the polish, production, programming, glitz or glam of the church world that we want. We want the authentic, real life transforming message that you brought. Leave it to the churches in the NW to mess with people. Loved that you came … look forward to having you back!
I was there! And it was disturbing. Sometimes it’s easy to get into a rut when you have been leading worship so long. Your message is still in my head as a constant reminder to change our worship services up. I had never stopped to realize that our “modern” church is the new “norm”. My passion is no longer how I can stay modern, but how I can worship God and keep our people excited to be a part of what God is doing at therockchurch.info. Thank you so much for listening to God and delivering a powerful message
Terrylgreg
You were right on about her needing to see her Father worship. So how’s about planting a home church?
Great word Los. Shared this with my worship team and our pastoral team. Love it bro.
i’m not going to lie to you… I stopped following you a long time ago (before your shift you talk about early in the video), because… right or wrong… in my mind you represented everything about American Christianity that I did not like.
I left too soon. Good stuff. I appreciated the word and will share it with my leadership.
Dude, holy heck, that message was awesome. The words disturb and disrupt have been on my heart a lot lately and this talk just compliments it, so great. Keep doin whatcha do los.
