85 Mics…One Church

Posted on 23. Jan, 2011 by loswhit in Authenticity, Religion, Service Programming

mymic
[from the #mymic hashtag experiment]

It’s so easy on Sundays to think we are the cat’s pajamas.
It’s so easy on Sundays to think if we build it they will come.
It’s so easy on Sundays to think our band is the answer to the church’s problems.
It’s so easy on Sundays to think we should film this so the world can see our awesomeness.

and…

It’s so easy on Sundays to think no one is gonna show up.
It’s so easy on Sundays to think “If they would only let me pay musicians”
It’s so easy on Sundays to think if we only had chairs instead of pews.
It’s so easy on Sundays to wish you had a building instead of a cafeteria

You Are Not Doing This Thing Alone.

At 7:45am I tweeted this…
“Hey worship leaders. Let’s see your mic. #mymic”
And within a few hours I had 85 pictured of your “mic’s”
Big room mics, little room mics, cheap mics, expensive mics, baby mics, preacher mics, pew and mics, florescent lights and mics.
What started off as a cool viral social media experiment turned into something far greater for me.
It showed me, as the tweets started coming in…
That at the same moment I was sound checking, 85 other people around this country were doing the same thing.
And that was just you guys as addicted to social media as I am and were on your phones at that moment.

It’s so much bigger than you.
May the image up top be a reminder of that.
Those are your mics. From your church.
But not 85 different churches.

This Is One Church.

That is so cool! Seriously a great reminder. I am not a church musician… but on Sunday mornings I control their levels. I loved the first part of this post too. I can apply those same “It’s so easy…” to my job at my church too. Which is way more than just the sound guy. As the media director that has a heart for ministry and missions… but could possibly be capable of so much more, I feel like I have all the answers sometimes. This is a great reminder that God has entrusted many others to do what I do as well and that we are all on God’s team.

It’s good sometimes to feel like you are the cat’s pajamas. But it’s also good to remember that those pajamas fit other cats too.

Wow! Great post. It is so easy to fall into the trap of “If I only had…” We could all fill in that blank with something. Thanks for the encouragement on this Monday, when it is so easy to think about what we could have done better yesterday. What if we thought about what went right?

I’m really not trying to be a jerk. Really. You just have to believe me on that I guess. But here goes…to say that we’re all “one church” is definitely stretching thing a bit. There are tons of great people who join together on Sunday mornings to sing, pray, listen to a sermon about important social causes, put money in a plate & even eat & drink some bread & wine but at the same time are not impacted by the Gospel at all. It’s not about us being one, it’s about Jesus being all!

Sorry for being a douche but it was what came to my mind as I read this. Peace & Rest, Nick

A bit of a Jesus juke because I think you get the point, but you have a point none the less.
And to say that we are all one church is not stretching if Jesus said it.

    Los,

You have no clue how much that ment to me to hear you say that. I go to a fairly small church (at least small compared to what I’ve gone to before- aka Seacoast) with about maybe close to about 200 people in both services. I’ve been in charge of the tech booth for over a year now. We are a church that is not about flashy lights or big stuff. I mean the church has been doing karoke worship since before I have gotten there. It seems like everytime I add a new thing on the screen or a new feature, I stress out. I want it the best. Part of me, when I walk in on Sunday, is like does anyone even know what the heck goes on behind the scenes to get the the words or the music going? It’s a lot harder than it seems. But reading this, releaved a lot of stress from me. I felt like I was the only one dealing with this stage stuff, wanting to make sure, everything was just right or the best that it could be. I’m sooooooo glad I’m not the only one.
    Thanks

    Kim

One of the most encouraging and mind-blowing things I reflect on weekly is the fact that when I’m doing Saturday sound check, thousands of churches in Australia, the Philippines, Asia, and all over globe are beginning their morning worship. I love seeing tweets from @joelhouston and @hillsong folks spurring us in the West on as we prepare for our worship gatherings. When we hit Midnight on Saturday, churches in Turkey, Russia, and brave Christians in the Middle East are meeting, followed by thousands in Europe.

Is there an app or website that we could actually see hashtag tweets on a map? Can we hashtag and geotag? How about let’s hashtag #ChurchIsStarting and include our location. It’d be a virtual wave of worship…

love the picture and the post.

  17. Great reminder. Another fun one to do is if you’re traveling on a mission trip, calculate when your home church’s service is and what people back home are doing as you’re sitting in service. It’s always cool to go to your service and then get some lunch and maybe take some time off as a team and then on your way to supper suddenly realize that your home church is doing sound check and people aren’t even finished worshiping God yet.
