    My wife calls me Papa.

  2. Sarah 15 March 2011 at 2:01 pm #

Some call me “The Miss” now because of my blog…..
But my real nickname was, is and always will be:
    Miss Mess!!

  4. Carrie 15 March 2011 at 2:03 pm #

My parents call me Buck. I have no idea why. It started before I had baby teeth. Now, even at the age of 28, I get nervous when they call me by my first name.

  5. Clark 15 March 2011 at 2:03 pm #

Sparky… I grew up in the Vegas Vacation and Christmas Vacation era… What can I say?! :)

  6. Virgil 15 March 2011 at 2:04 pm #

I lived in a really small town (think Mayberry with citrus trees freaking EVERYWHERE) where most of my teachers called me Tracy, my dad’s name. It wasn’t because they were senile. It was because he had gone to school at that school with them 20 years back and it was their way of telling me “I know who your daddy is. I played golf with him Saturday and if you look at me like that again I’m gonna tell him when I see him at Rotary this afternoon.”

    Awesome.

  7. Kevin 15 March 2011 at 2:06 pm #

    No real nicknames growing up…

Wife calls me “papi” (I’m round like a certain Boston Red Sox player, but that’s where the similarities end…can’t hit a baseball to save my life).

However, nearly 4 years ago, I gained the best nickname ever….”Daddy”!

  8. Elizabeth Birak 15 March 2011 at 2:06 pm #

My nickname was Bizzie or Biz all throughout childhood. My older brother and sister couldn’t say Elizabeth, so they said Bizzie beth instead.

I kind of stopped using it in college, because I felt like I had shifted away from being myself and was living out this other persona of who I thought other people wanted me to be. “Biz” was kind of a rockstar. Lot’s of fun, but all surface. So now I’m just Elizabeth, except to my family and close friends from when I was young.

  9. Jameson 15 March 2011 at 2:06 pm #

I have been called Jame-O or Jamestown. Jame-O is just shorter, so I assume that’s why my lazier friends started calling me that.

  10. Ben 15 March 2011 at 2:06 pm #

Mine is currently “Buttons”. I got it at a summer camp I worked at this past summer. It started as calling me Benjamin Buttons a few times. It was then shortened to Buttons. A few people still refuse to call me anything else.

  11. Mela Kamin 15 March 2011 at 2:10 pm #

I was going to blog about this very thing today … my real name is Pamela. 15yrs ago, an Italian gentleman called me Pa-MAYLA and it stuck. I always felt it was more “me.” From a Biblical sense, it fits too, since I feel I was being remade at that point in my life.

  12. Nate Eaton 15 March 2011 at 2:11 pm #

I had a buddy that called me “Wheatthin” for a while. No idea why. My family calls me Nasipoo. If you ain’t family though, don’t try it.

On a different note, I have friend who was given the birth name Faith, but from the time she was born, she has always been called Murphy. Again, no idea why.

  13. Steve 15 March 2011 at 2:14 pm #

The college rugby team dubbed me Killer.

  15. Emily M 15 March 2011 at 2:21 pm #

As a kid I was anything from Em, Emi, Emiline or Emersmidge (hated that one- with a passion). These days I’m mostly Em, but my husband dubbed me Emilitafrita while we were dating that got shortened to Frita. Several friends only ever refer to me as Frita and emilitafrita has become my username for lots of things- it’s a one-of-a-kind!

  16. Violet 15 March 2011 at 2:25 pm #

most people find my name cool enough to stand on its own. my mom used to call me viley wiley though. my brasilian friends call me violeta… but thats standard.

  17. Josh 15 March 2011 at 2:26 pm #

    My name is Josh Suson.
Growing up teachers always mispronounced my last name and said Susan. My friends found it funny and it stuck. So until I left high school I was called Susan or Susie. In college my named shifted to Suson, as there were 7 Joshes that lived in my dorm. I’m still mostly called Suson today.

  18. Caleb Gordon 15 March 2011 at 2:28 pm #

Mine was “Cable” and most folks just call m by my middle name: Reed

  19. Jennifer 15 March 2011 at 2:29 pm #

K-12 Jenni (which now brings back horrible flashbacks), my family except for Grandma it is Jennifer, but Grandma called me Jen as do my friends now. At the school where my husband and I teach students call me JNo…a kid said all I ever tell them is NO NO NO so that’s what he named me, not because I look like JLo (sigh).

  20. Carlos Sandoval 15 March 2011 at 2:30 pm #

Growing up, my family and friends always called me Carlitos. To this day my mom still calls me by that. And in Junior High there was a period when they called me “Weasel”… but I don’t like to talk about that LOL

BTW In this picture your daughter Seanna looks just like you.

  21. nicole 15 March 2011 at 2:33 pm #

    nickel pickel.
i used to sleep walk and eat cheese and pickles from the fridge when i was like 6. I LOVE PICKLES.
so then my dad (pops) starting saying i was his nickel pickle.

eventually it evolved into {daddy’s pickle that isn’t worth a nickel}.

    still recovering from that one

  22. Brenda 15 March 2011 at 2:36 pm #

I didn’t really have a nickname when I was a kid, but in college some of my friends started calling me Brendos. They still call me that sometimes, especially on Facebook. I’ve also been called Brendo, and B-renda.

  23. Katie Ristow 15 March 2011 at 2:37 pm #

My mom called me Taterbugs everyday of her life. But my blog name “ristowswife” has caught on pretty quickly around TRF.

  24. Marshall 15 March 2011 at 2:39 pm #

    Mersh.

It went from working at camp where staff came up with “Camp Names”… Mine was Danger Bay… transformed to Dbay… to Deebs… to Marshwigs… now Mersh… Affectionately coined by my ministry partners who were at the camp years ago and work with me today.

  25. a.bird 15 March 2011 at 2:45 pm #

Since high school, it’s been either Bird (my last name) or Birdman. It was worse when I was in middle school: Bird-turd.

  26. jonathan cliff 15 March 2011 at 2:46 pm #

I have a little brother that is only 18 months younger, and his friends started calling him “Little Cliff”. However, as a joke they started calling me “Big Cliff.” Soon people that didn’t even know I had a little brother, started calling me Big Cliff.

It’s all confusing, because I’m 6’1″ and only weigh 145. Not exactly BIG.

  27. bruce 15 March 2011 at 2:47 pm #

because of a cowlick in my hair, i’ve been known as the rooster for some time now.

  28. Rachel 15 March 2011 at 2:49 pm #

I grew up being called Lucy (no clue how they got Lucy from Rachel…), my niece now calls me Bucy, and my friends call me either Ramey or Gir. I like Ramey best because it’s actually where my name came from. I’m named after a Cabbage Patch Kid, Ramie (short for Rachel Marie).

  29. Linny Best 15 March 2011 at 2:54 pm #

Linny is my nickname (really it’s Lindsay, much more boring)…I was a nanny in high school and the youngest little girl couldn’t say “Lindsay” and it came out “Linny”…and it stuck! Dale, my hubs, always said when he first met me that he couldn’t call me Linny, and I gotta say, he tried very hard to say Lindsay every time, but eventually the peer pressure from everyone else calling me Linny got the best of him and now it never says Lindsay! The only person who still calls me Lindsay is my Daddy, and that’s okay, to him, I’ll always be Lindsay K.

  30. Laurie 15 March 2011 at 2:56 pm #

    Honkey Butt

I’ve always been the pale one of the family. My family is white but they are all much darker toned than me. In fact my skin tone borders on ghost. One day my father decided I was paler than a Honkey’s butt.

  31. Ronne 15 March 2011 at 3:00 pm #

The name I use now is actually my nickname. I tried to go by my real name, Veronica, several times – but “Ronne” keeps on hanging in there. As a child, I wasn’t called by either of these names. My family thought middle names were nifty and family names were even better, so I was LaVerne until a nice teacher put a stop to the sadness.

  32. Andy Newsome 15 March 2011 at 3:05 pm #

Growing up, my dad always called me “Sport”. That is what I always put on the back of my jerseys when I played baseball, football and basketball as a kid. He still calls me “Sport” from time to time which is really cool. I had some buddies in high school that called me “BigHurt”. I’m still not exactly sure why. I have always been big, but, in high school, I did choir, musical theater, and played on the golf team, so….”hurt” didn’t exactly fit…;)

  33. Christen 15 March 2011 at 3:13 pm #

-My family calls me Chris or Chrissy
-My sister called me Nikki because she gave me my middle name Nicole… so all of her friends call me that.
-One year in elementary school I decided to go by Nikki (for no reason in particular) so anyone that met me that year knows me as such
-My mom calls me ladybug or mary lucy (no rhyme or reason)
-My close friends call me peaches (a fake name I gave to someone years ago)
-My grandma calls me bay (baby girl)

    I prefer Christen :)

  34. Adam 15 March 2011 at 3:23 pm #

When I was in high school it was Adam Bomb. Got it playin intramural basketball bc it’s what my team told me to put on the back of my shirt. We rocked black cut off sleeve t-shirts and duck taped our names and jersey numbers on them. We were dorks. But we won.

    • shayne 15 March 2011 at 4:56 pm #

I have a younger brother named Adam. His middle name is Bradley and we used to call him Adam B-bomb.

i had a friend name Kristal, and i was “Crystal” in HS and she started calling me “Perez” and then she messed up one day and said “Pez”..it’s stuck and there’s some people in this world don’t even know it’s my nickname, they think it’s my name! haha

    Ruckus.

That’s a lot of what I caused growing up. It went from “You always cause a ruckus.” from my teachers (specially the ones I fought). After I got saved it came to be the nickname. I added Rychus to it cause that’s what I cause a Rychus Ruckus…lol

  38. David 15 March 2011 at 3:38 pm #

I was dbuck and still go by that name to my closest friends.

  39. Andrew 15 March 2011 at 3:41 pm #

My nickname has always been “Ed” or “Eddy” Comes from my surname “Edwards”. I’ve had it for the last 17 years or so, its now to the point that they call me Ed at work rather than Andrew – even right up to the big boss :) Works for me, I respond to either Ed or Andrew. My wife calls me Ed or Babe, either works for me :) :)

  44. Carrie 15 March 2011 at 5:17 pm #

when i was a kid, everyone called me “CareBear” just to piss me off. i’m so the opposite of a CareBear.

nowadays, i don’t have a nickname other than the one i make my niece and nephew use – CC. its easier for them to say.

  45. Anna C 15 March 2011 at 5:18 pm #

    Anna Banana of course!

Except for my mom, who called me “Anna my Joy” (awww)

  46. Stevie 15 March 2011 at 5:24 pm #

My real name is LaStevie (black parents in the 70′s were not thinking very clearly). I guess I dropped the “la” about the 2nd or 3rd grade (some teachers still call me la).

When I was in high school my friends would call my house, my aunt would yell across the house “steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, phone” and my crew has stuck with Stee since then.

    SK

  47. Jason 15 March 2011 at 5:30 pm #

For many years I had the nickname “Jake.” Then it just faded out and now I don’t really have one that people call me to my face.

  48. Jenny 15 March 2011 at 5:37 pm #

My name is Jennifer, everyone but my stepmother calls me Jenny or Jen. Jennifer actually makes me feel as if im hated or in major trouble.
Jenny evolved to “Jenny the Penny” in like 1st grade by my very best friend Thomas. It comes with a song “Jenny the penny the big fat penny… rolling, rolling.” Not super creative i started calling him “Thomas “Bo-bomas” and called him a fat hippopotamus. To this day he still sometimes calls me “Jenny the Penny” and I and others call him “Tom-bomb”

  49. Jeff 15 March 2011 at 5:39 pm #

Never was cool enough to have a nickname for fun. They were always cruel but, kind of funny now.

Big Bird, Lurch, Baby Huey, to name a few.

    • Jeff 15 March 2011 at 5:40 pm #

And please, don’t make fun. Still in therapy lol

  50. Laurie 15 March 2011 at 5:40 pm #

Somehow I got the nickname “waddy” and it stuck. Nobody exactly knows why, but they guess it’s because I used a lot of TP! I think their nickname is why I now have Crohn’s Disease. GO FIGURE! :)

  51. Hannah 15 March 2011 at 5:43 pm #

When I was little the thing to do was to have a girl nickname if you were a guy and a boy nickname if you were a girl. So I was “Hans”.
I always thought that was a little lame to tell the truth.
In college I dyed my hair red on night and my roommates started calling me “Sparky”.
I’ve been called “Hannah Banana” ever since I was BORN, but a few years ago one of my co-workers started calling me “Chiquita”. :)

  52. Mike 15 March 2011 at 5:43 pm #

It started out as “Nieb” a shortened version of my last name. Then a girl in HS started calling me “dweeber.” She was cute, so what was I going to say. I’m just glad that never caught on! Now it’s back to “Nieb” or “Niebs.”

  53. Judi Thomas 15 March 2011 at 5:53 pm #

My husband started calling me JudiFree when we met. It stuck and now my blog is called JudiFree and people even refer to me as JudiFree.com now.

(he called me judifree because it sounds like Duty-Free)

My childhood nickname was “Big Booty Judi” – which was much for fitting for me.

  54. Laura 15 March 2011 at 5:54 pm #

My nicknames have morphed over time….
Started with just Lolly. Then it was Lolly Pop then Lolly Poppers, and now just Poppers. And occasionally by my precious niece who is two, Lolly Dolly.

  55. Evan Courtney 15 March 2011 at 6:01 pm #

    Chevy. No clue why.

  56. Jessica 15 March 2011 at 6:03 pm #

My friend calls me Kashi, because when he met me I was looking at Kashi online, so now all of his friends call me that as well.
There’s for my exotic nickname, now here’s my boring one.

Friends from college call me Jessy- my two roommates went by “Jenny” and “Emmy” but no one else called them that, it was sort of just shared between them. But when I met them, we clicked and so through names we bonded more.

  57. Queenzilla 15 March 2011 at 6:09 pm #

Queenzilla. It use to be Queenie, but pre-menopause and all…haha. I wasn’t born royalty, but I was adopted by the Father of the King of Kings. I have a crown waiting for me. As HIS child I am learning the greatest lesson for royals: Loyalty comes not from how you lead your people, but rather how you serve them. I will live in my Father’s house one day, but for now I’m happy to serve in His kingdom…thankful every day that He ransomed me from poverty.

  58. RTB 15 March 2011 at 6:17 pm #

Well….pre-college I was called “the beast” b/c of how I played basketball.

During college I earned the nick name “cripple” now shorten to “crip” b/c I kept getting injured…b/c of basketball.

Funny, I’ve since stopped playing basketball, and have stopped garnering nick names…….

  59. Mel 15 March 2011 at 6:19 pm #

  60. gail the whale 15 March 2011 at 6:20 pm #

    my name is gail.
in 4th grade i was called “gail the whale”
    i was/am thin as a rail.
but “gail the whale” stuck until 9th grade.
1st day of college i ran into a friend from elementary school who called me…gail the whale.
i would hate it if i was fat, but i’m not so it’s okay.
my college friend’s kids call me “aunt gail the whale”

  61. Jan 15 March 2011 at 6:25 pm #

I was “Little Jan” when I co-volunteered with another Jan who was there first .. she decided she’d rather be “Big Jan” than “Old Jan” .. even though I was about 5″ taller than she. .. that’s been it .. she’s gone now, and so are most of the people from that era, so I’m back to plain ol’ Jan. Just not the nicknamed kind of gal, I guess!

  62. Sean R Reid 15 March 2011 at 6:26 pm #

My Dad’s name is John so growing up I was “Rober’” (the French version of Robert, my middle name) because we often got mixed up if my Mom yelled for Sean.

In college I was “Ranger” because my freshmen dorm room was totally decorated with Might Morphin Power Rangers toys, sheets, pillows, etc… I was 18 going on about 11. I’m 36 now and I have a couple friends that still call me Ranger and forget that it’s not my real name.

    • ida 15 March 2011 at 9:24 pm #

My best friend from high school gave me the nickname Scotter and one of my college buddies started calling me Scooby (and he is the only one who can get away with calling me that).

  65. Anna Angela 15 March 2011 at 6:50 pm #

It’s Gela or Ghela, and sometimes gets shortened to Gel, which sometimes gets shortened to Ge. But I’m the eldest daughter so my family also calls me Ate (ah-teh) which is the Tagalog/Filipino word for older sister.

  68. Pendy 15 March 2011 at 7:18 pm #

My name is so unusual that no one ever thought to give me a nickname. My granddaughter calls me Mia…does that count?

  69. Dale Best 15 March 2011 at 7:56 pm #

Don’t really have a nickname now … but I had a nickname as a kid. My name is Dale … so my friends called me … wait for it … wait for it ….”Dale-doe”

Go ahead. Laugh. I know you want to.

  70. Mountainash 15 March 2011 at 8:24 pm #

My nickname came into being when I was about four years old and took to clobbering my kid sister. My name is Ashley and my sister was too young to say, “Ashley hit me”; instead it came out, “She-be-doo”. Somehow this stuck.

I took up snowboarding when I was eleven and that’s when I became “Crashley”. Later, when I moved into wakeboarding it became “Splashley”.

  71. Ray LeTellier 15 March 2011 at 8:40 pm #

Ray-Ray as a kid–then just Ray–now that I’m older the name Ray-Ray came back–even from people who never knew me as a kid !

  72. CynHendrix 15 March 2011 at 8:42 pm #

When I was young my mom made sure people called me “Cynthia”. She did not want people to call me “Cindy”.
Then when I was in the 11th grade, I had a chemistry teacher that was a short, atheistic Jew from New Jersey. My mom was a math teacher at my high school and she was the faculty adviser for the Y-club (if you don’t know, it’s a christian service-based club sponsored by the state YMCA) and I was our club co-president. To try to get the christian feathers ruffled, my chemistry teacher started calling me “Cyn”. And then my classmates started calling me Cyn. It didn’t hurt my feelings, but my mom hated it. I had the same teacher for physics in the 12th grade and he still called me Cyn. My high school friends that went to the same college as me called me Cyn. Then all my college friends called me Cyn. My husband calls me Cyn (makes for lots of scripture-based jokes at marriage conferences). His parents call me Cyn. My pastor called me Dr. Cyn (b/c I’m a Doctor of Pharmacy). My grandparents have started calling me Dr. Cyn. And now my dad calls me Cyn. My mom still calls me Cynthia.

That brick and metal post in your pic looks exactly like the post and brick on my house here in Charleston,SC–where was that photo taken?

  74. Jarrod Kinman 15 March 2011 at 8:43 pm #

My nicknames were mostly based on my real name… Jay-Rod or Jair Also I was called “chewy” for a while. I had a habit of making the Chewbacca cry quite frequently.

  75. ida 15 March 2011 at 9:22 pm #

  76. Amanda Sims 15 March 2011 at 10:13 pm #

To my best friend I was Mandi-Moo.

    No further comment.

  77. Stephanie 15 March 2011 at 10:46 pm #

My nickname is Fresh. Sometimes I also get Freshie, Freshness, or Freshums. For most of my life people just called me Steph. Then in college the girls who lived next to us in the dorms were VERY loud. I was pretty timid, and I said that I couldn’t go tell them to quiet down. A guy I knew told me that “Steph” couldn’t say anything, but that my new alter ego “SteffieFresh” could definitely go over and handle the situation. I never did say anything about the noise, but the nickname SteffieFresh sure did stick! Over time the Steffie got dropped. Now I’m just FRESH!

  78. Sean Sabourin 16 March 2011 at 12:33 am #

My last name is Sabourin. While playing hockey as a kid, my nickname was Sabby. It was a lot easier to pronounce than Sabourin?

  79. Kelsie 16 March 2011 at 12:33 am #

My grandfather used to call me ‘Doc’. You know, like off the 7 dwarfs. I never really understood why. Because I never felt THAT wise like the little animated wise fella you see in the movie.

  80. Abby 16 March 2011 at 12:38 am #

I was Scabby all through high school. It started with a youth group leader named Hope. We added an “sc” to the front of her name (Scope) and she, in turn, added an “sc” to each of our names (hence “Scabby”.) My closest friends in high school called me Scabby or Scabs for four years. And I answered to it!

My name is Kalla (like callalilly or California) so it’s always mispronounced but growing up my family called me Bubba! Not so much anymore but once in a while my mom and dad still say it! But they used to call me porkchop and cacabe (until they found out what cava meant!) now I just get called mom and babe (my husband very rarely calls me by my name)

Jake the snake. Yep- the stupidest, make me want to stab somebody nickname ever. Only a handfull of people call me that… thank goodness.

I was always called by my first name. I moved back to Puerto Rico and the middle school popular kid misunderstood my name when I stood in front of the class to present myself. I’ve been called “Joey” ever since.

I do love my daughter’s nickname, though! Her name is Ana BelĂ©n (Ah-nah Beh-lehn), but my wife and I used to text and referred to her as “A.B.”

Now, the world knows her as “Bee”.

  84. Abby Y 16 March 2011 at 8:02 am #

My given name is Abigail, but pretty much everyone calls me Abby. Or Ab-a-gal. I have one friend at school who will yell “Abigail Marie!” to get my attention. But she’s pretty much the only person who calls me Abigail.
My sister will sometimes call me Gaila.
Abs was also a nickname at one point. Hah.

When I was little, I was LITTLE. Head shorter than the short kids, little. My family started calling me Toot because I was just a little Toot. That morphed into Tooter or Tootie. They still all call me some variation of Toot.

I used to hate it, but now when I hear my niece yell “TOOTIE!” when I walk in the door…it’s the best ever.

I’ve never had any long lasting nick names. At summer camp where I worked I was called Maverick. No, not the cool Top Gun Maverick the Mel Gibson gambler Maverick. I got it because my name is Brett, and like the character in the movie, people always get my name wrong. That lasted a week or so until one of my friends decided that it would be funnier if they just intentionally called me by the wrong name that is sort of similar to Brett. So from then on I basically answered to Burt, Bart, Brent, etc.

In college I acquired the common nickname “Mo”.

Then a few started calling me “Mo-Drig”.

Many of my Youth Choir kids call me “Uncle MoMo”. That one feels good on my ears.

I have a few, depending on who I’m with:

    Jay
    Papa J (my college students)
Uncle J (some hs youth I work with)

My name is Lynette, but since I was in grade school I’ve been called Fred. my maiden name was Fredrickson, I’m the only girl of 7 kids…
over the years there were many variations of fred…little fred, frita, freddieboo, freddy. I have tried as an adult to go back to Lynette, but every where I go someone knows me, so i’ve embraced it, and declared it Freddie.

  90. Chris 16 March 2011 at 12:41 pm #

in Jr. High there was a smart-alec kid in my art class who discovered that Christopher – Chris = Topher. That nick-name has since lived on as well as its various conjugations such as “Tofu”, “Toaster”, and “Toph” with an occasional “Gopher” thrown in for kicks and giggles :)

  94. Stacey 16 March 2011 at 11:42 pm #

The boy I had a crush on from age 8-17 called me Stacey-Rooter-Tooter.
    Sometimes Stace
But never anything that was “nicknameish” ever stuck.

    I am just Stacey.

  95. Natalie 17 March 2011 at 2:08 am #

One nickname I have is and always has been “Nat.” When I was younger and my parents or friends wanted to bug me it was “Nat the Rat,” and now my mom just likes to call me “Brat.” Generally though people just seem to like saying my name in various different ways, such as Natalya, and for some reason people just seem to like shouting it at me or saying it randomly even if they don’t have anything else to say to me. It’s fun! ;)

  96. Jenn 18 March 2011 at 6:38 pm #

You sure look like Seanna in this picture!

  97. Mark Cox 27 March 2011 at 11:39 am #

My last name has left me with several “fun” nicknames. I think you’re imagination will take you on paths far funnier than my mere typing of them. Enjoy yourself!
