Spontaneous Disaster

Posted on 30. Jun, 2011 by loswhit in Authenticity

I was 16.
It was my first date.
I was driving to her house.
I got nervous.
I drove my best friends house.
I asked if he would get in the trunk.
To make me feel less nervous.
He said yes.
He grabbed a flashlight and some magazines.
He rode in the trunk with me to pick her up.
The second I saw her I wished he wasn’t in my truck.
We drove straight to the movies.
He was supposed to get back in the trunk by 8:30 when the movie was over.
When we walked back to the car I could see the back seat was down.
He wasn’t back in the trunk.
He was CRAWLING back into the trunk…
AS WE WALKED UP TO THE CAR…
And it all unraveled from there… #disaster

It was the most spontaneous decision I had made in my young love life.
And it blew up right next to the girl of my dreams.

The rest of the story only gets better.

But first…
You have to share…
What is the most spontaneous thing you have ever done?
And would you do it again?

I said yes to a job that ended in total disaster… I would not do it again now that I am on the other side of it. There were many signs that the marriage of the owners was doomed and I ended up being in the middle of many of their arguments… literally standing in between them and there was nothing I could do. I ended up quitting after they began to blame me instead of each other for lack of customers. Oy.

went on an impromptu college Spring break trip prompted by a crush … found out guy was on the other bus & talked my way onto there … then spent the whole way down from WI to FL in a seat near him (and his serious girlfriend) – ugh

Senior year of high school. I went to my crush’s house, knocked on his door, asked if he wanted to go the coffee shop. He said yes, we went, he taught me to play chess. It was a proud moment. :)

Oh, and I don’t think I’ll ever have enough guts to do it again. Especially not in the era of texting.

You…had a friend in the trunk? I’m having a hard time containing my laughter.

The most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done was last December. My grandpa was sick and in the hospital, and my mom really wanted me to come visit him. I lived 5 1/2 hours from my grandparents, 4 hours from my parents, and between work and church volunteering I just didn’t feel up to a one-day trip full of driving. That Friday night I fell asleep way early, and Saturday morning when I couldn’t sleep I decided spur of the moment to just do it. At 6am I was on the road, and I saw my grandpa that night. He died two days later, and I’m so glad I listened when that urge came suddenly. Honestly, it was probably the Holy Spirit nudging me to go.

I got married on whim only after two weeks of dating my “boyfriend”. Needless to say, it didn’t last. No, I would not do it again. But I also will never forget the lessons learned.

I’ve done many spontaneous things in my lifetime. None of them compare to that though!

I feel like I need to write an episode of a sitcom based off of that haha.

I can’t wait for the end of the story.

One night I jumped in my car and drove from Arkansas to Ohio to meet someone I met on the internet. Worse decision ever. I ended up trapped in a posionous relationship, destroying the relationship I was in previously, and causing horrible damage to my then-boyfriend, now-husband. I am thankful for where I am now and if I could have gotten to this place in life by any other path I would gladly do it. Praise God for grace and mercy. And second chances.

Was 14 at a youth camp down the beach. A storm had just finished and a few of us though it would be great to go ride the huge swell in the ocean. I got dumpped a few times by some huge waves and lost my swim shorts. All my buddies thought it was hilarious and took of out of the surf, grabbed all the towels and gear and went back to camp site. I needed to get back so I decided to make a run for it. I got to the road undetected but as I crossed along came a bus full of old women! They got a good look and I got back to the camp quite embarrased :) . Been telling that story for years and laughing :p

Probably wouldnt do it again now 17 yrs later but that story always reminds me to not always play it safe, that taking a risk can be worth it!

I moved to Minnesota (from GA) within 2 weeks of scheduling an interview for a job I ended up not getting. Best move I’ve ever made though, I found another job that I absolutely loved and wish I could go back to.

I was in sixth grade, and my family had just switched from a catholic church to a baptist one. I was still trying to get a grasp on baptism and well, i baptized my cat… and my mom had to blow dry her. To this day, the cat runs when she sees me and well, i would not make a mistake like that again.

Welp, I think my most spontaneous decision came about 4 months ago when I took a job I (basically) knew nothing about in flippin’ South Korea and moved halfway around the world from all my friends and family. Of course, it kind of came back to bite me in the butt b/c the job is ridiculous and I don’t like it here, so I’m heading home in less than a month! That being said, it’s still been a good experience because I’ve learned plenty of lessons along the way and have a better understanding of where I want to go from here.

My husband and I spontaneously decided to have our first child. Wow… the timing was terrible. But she was the best thing we ever did. Literally :)

My sister was in Italy for a semester abroad a couple years ago. It was two weeks from when she was coming home and I realized I never visited her there like I wanted to. It was a Tuesday when I realized this. I told my husband of my regret and he told me I should go. Wednesday we bought the ticket. Thursday was my flight and I was back Monday night. It was a great visit, but a seriously stretching experience as well. Oh, and it made me realize that I really do have the best, most supportive husband ever.

I don’t understand… How was he going to help IN THE TRUNK?

This post and the comments are making me realize how un-spontaneous I am. Mine would be something boring like an impromptu road trip, or changing travel plans, or saying something stupid without over analyzing it first ;)

I was spontaneously saved in 7th grade, but (that one didn’t count). The lady at VBS had us cut out people from magazine and glue them on popcicle sticks. Then we did some role-playing/boring/lame puppet show thing. Next she lit a fire. And then she collected all of our paper people and through them in the fire and said “That’s exactly what will happen to you if you don’t give your life to Jesus.” Ummm, no pressure. I was IN. But, I don’t think that one counted.

please tell me that didn’t really happen . . .

And, I was peed on by a lion at the zoo. More random than spontaneous, I suppose.

    9th grade
    Group of neighborhood peeps
I was just following the crowd
Didn’t realize what we were “actually doing”
until we were already in the house.
    Nearby new construction neighborhood
New house, finished but not yet occupied
    Entered through basement door
Had a full on party in said house
Like people got in the jacuzzi tub and all
    Some even spent the night
I was scared out of my mind!

Was surfing a travel site and saw a great deal for a trip that was leaving the next day. I booked it, took leave, went home and packed and had the best long weekend ever. Alone.

    I’d definitely do it again

I did a skit for our jr highers and drank a cup full of the remnents of 4 other people prior eating oreos, brushing their teeth with the water in the cup, gurgling, and then spitting the water back into the cup.

    I threw up.

I would not do it again. Well, maybe I would.

    HILarious!

Highschool. Drove around in my Delta 88 (we called it the Oldsmobubble). It was deisel but had a slammin trunk.

Group of us went around in the middle of the night and collected for sale signs and lined them all up in the front lawn of someone’s house.

Laughed so hard we almost tee teed ourselves :)
