Church Plants, Airplanes, and Bulldozers

Gibraltar is the only major airport where the runway actually intersects with a major highway. When a plane has to take off or land, car traffic is shut down.
I feel like this is a perfect example of how sometimes, although maybe with good intentions, our churches literally plow people over in order to take off.
When we start new churches and focus so hard on the business of the church, instead of the purpose of the church, we end up building airport runways across the major center of our communities and somehow feel like the people in the community wanted our new airstrip.

Build INTO your community as opposed to ONTO your community.

Good stuff Los. If more plants were to “learn” where the “airstrips” were actually needed, they might actually become a vital part of the community they’re planted in.

Business instead of purpose love it Los. I think many times we try to outsource God in our business of church by the programs and strategies we use to “plant”.

And that’s why I work at panera for 7.25 an hour.. So that I can learn from the people I serve and work with instead of moving in and telling them what they need. Everyday I hate going to work, I remind myself that from this minimum wage sandwhich shop will come a community of people who love Jesus.

absolutely los! On the other hand when you finally plant a church of loving devoted followers thriving in relationships, satan lurks in the shadows causing drama at every turn. Loving relationships are so messy, its a wonder why many church plants keep it business…however i would rather be ran over by satan for the cause of building relationships rather than programs. Cheaa! love you brother!

Yikes! I’d sure hate to be in one of those planes when it’s taking off or landing. What if a car decided to pull a suicide mission?

Anyway…yes…life can be like that. Having to wait while someone else can take off. It’s a good reminder of why it might be wise to take a detour now and then, especially when you look up and see the plane getting ready to land!

I feel like this speaks right to the heart of what is wrong with the Church overall.

Build INTO your community as opposed to ONTO your community.

This line is a challenge I think every church should take up, add to their bylaws…whatever, make it a priority.
